1 528 Lathrop Avenue River Forest, Illinois the peace he left with us has gone missing it was nearly lost in Antioch when Gentiles scorned circumcision and Jews ate apart at kosher tables amid dissension and debate concerning an important question of doctrine (always an important question of doctrine!) the answer came from the Spirit and from the Church do not burden one another beyond necessity faith, strength, vision, even passion are not enough orthodoxy is certainly not enough living well together is the key in Antioch they learned the lesson reclaimed his peace were called Christian but somehow that peace has gone missing forgotten on some narrow ledge of history or in our other suit perhaps we search in all the wrong (but easy) pockets we retreat demoralized and need an Advocate to teach us everything again text by E.M.Jeep MAY 9, 2010 Sixth Sunday of Easter

STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid. John 14:27 When we let the daily pressures of life trouble us we begin to believe that we are responsible for taking care of everything. This causes us to frantically cling to both our time and treasure. Yet, Jesus tells us not to be troubled or afraid. Take a deep breath and place your trust in God. When you do, you can be a better steward of all that God has placed in your care. 3 GATHER IN PRAYER AND SERVICE SELECTING NEW PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL MEMBERS Fr. Ken and the PPC are undertaking the process of selecting four new PPC members to begin serving three-year terms starting this June, and want to explain the selection process to all parishioners. The PPC: Our 12-member Parish Council is designed to advise and counsel the pastor on matters related to the pastoral life at St. Luke, and to work to improve pastoral life at St. Luke. Most council members serve as liaisons the interface between the PPC and the dozens of ministries and groups within our parish. We have organized the various St. Luke ministries and groups into five main areas, or constellations Liturgy, Sacraments, Faith Formation, Human Concerns and Community. Liaisons are responsible for staying in close touch with the ministry and group leaders in their constellation, bringing to the PPC any issues or concerns or requests for assistance from those ministries and groups, and working with the ministries and groups to periodically update the PPC. Two major foci during the next three years will be initiatives to increase Sunday Mass attendance and the implementation of a Stewardship Program. Prospective PPC members should be willing and able to learn more about these issues and to commit themselves to a significant role in addressing them. Three council members fill the positions of chair, vice chair and secretary positions that each last for one year. And, two council members represent St. Luke at our Deanery IV-B. (The deanery is a collection of nearby parishes that is the interface between the Cardinal and Archdiocesan parishes.) The PPC meets once a month from September through June. PPC meetings are held on Monday nights in Waldron Hall and last for approximately 90 minutes. The Selection Process: PPC members are not elected. Rather, they are selected by a process that is designed to be open to the entire parish, and to result in selecting those parishioners who are in the best position to serve on this council at this time. Traditionally, parishioners who have been active in one or more committees, ministries, groups or volunteer positions within our parish community decide to take the next step and indicate their interest in serving on the Parish Council. The process begins with this announcement. Next, there will be a general information meeting in Waldron Hall on Monday, May 17, at 7:00 pm. Departing and returning PPC members will be there with Fr. Ken, to explain what the PPC does, how it operates, and the rewards and challenges of serving on our Parish Council. A significant amount of time is set aside to answer questions. Following the May 17 informational meeting, interested parishioners will be invited to a meeting in the rectory on Sunday, June 6, at 1:30 pm. That meeting is designed to prayerfully discern those four new members who will join the PPC in June. We hope you can make it on May 17. If you are interested in being considered to serve on the council but cannot make this meeting, then please contact any member of the Parish Council or Fr. Ken, and arrangements will be made to fill you in on what you missed, and answer your questions. The St. Luke PPC Fr. 6 GATHERINGS FROM THE PARISH FAREWELL EVENTS FOR FR. OSRIC BANDA Our visiting priest from Zambia, Fr. Osric Banda, is completing his graduate studies at the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago and will be returning home to Zambia on May 25. We are grateful for his presence at St. Luke s during these past nine months and most especially for his leading us in worship. On Sunday, May 16, Father Osric will celebrate the 10:30 Mass, and we will have a Farewell Reception in his honor in Waldron Hall. Everyone is cordially invited to take this opportunity to thank Father Osric personally and to wish him well as he embarks upon his new assignment as Rector of St. Mary s Minor Seminary. MISSION APPEAL FOR ST. MARY S MINOR SEMINARY IN ZAMBIA St. Mary s Minor Seminary was established in 1980, with the aim of providing quality Catholic education to potential candidates for the priesthood and religious life in the Chipata Diocese of Zambia. The local church heavily depends on this seminary for its pastoral agents. For instance, about 70% of the diocesan priests ordained in the Chipata diocese between 1990 and 2009 were students at St. Mary s. Currently, the seminary has about 150 teen students, the majority of whom come from very poor families who live on an income below $1 per day. It costs about $1,000 per student each academic year to meet their educational needs which include boarding and lodging, salaries for lay Catholic teachers and other administrative costs. Of the $1,000 needed, students only contribute about $400 each, because they cannot afford to pay the required amount. The seminary has to raise the remaining sum elsewhere. It is for this reason that I am asking for the generosity of St. Luke parishioners to financially assist the noble education cause of St. Mary s Seminary. Your contributions can make a huge difference in the lives of these young students who are being prepared to serve God through the Church. A special second collection will be taken at all the Masses on the weekend of May for this purpose. The Seminary couldn t do without the generosity of donors like you. Thank you. Fr. Osric Banda (Please note: checks may be made payable to St. Luke Church with notation of St. Mary s Seminary.) 6 PLEASE JOIN US... on Friday, May 14, St. Luke School students and faculty will be honoring St. Matthias at a special Mass at 9:15 am in the Church. ~ Everyone is welcome to attend! THE ADVENTURE CONTINUES... Adventures in Revelation: The Kingdom Yet to Come continues this Wednesday, May 12, in the Faculty Lounge from 7-8:30 pm. Please bring your study materials and prepare Revelation 16-18: Bowls of Judgment and Fall of Babylon. We welcome all great adventurers! Join us! WELCOME TO ST. LUKE River Forest, IL FEAST OF THE ASCENSION Next weekend we will celebrate the Feast of the Lord s Ascension into heaven. Some years ago the American Catholic bishops transferred this important feast day from Thursday to Sunday so that everyone might more easily participate in the celebration. Let us celebrate the Lord s Ascension with gratitude and joy. 500 CLUB The St. Luke Athletic Committee would like to congratulate the following winner of the 500 Club drawing: May 2, 2010 Peter Briggs Thank you to all who have purchased memberships in the club, the proceeds of which go directly to fund the school s athletic programs.

LUKE SCHOOL NEWS EARTH DAY On Earth Day, the fourth graders of St. Luke School visited the Sisters of St. Joseph at the Well. First, we began our day by singing about the planet. One Planet, One Earth was my favorite song. We danced while we sang songs. The songs we heard were all about how we can help the planet. Next, we took a nature hike. On the nature hike we picked up trash, and saw different plants and animals. We even saw the fossil of an animal. When we got back, we ate lunch outside and heard stories. We heard how the Earth was made. We also heard about the first people on the planet. We had a wonderful time with the Sisters of St. Joseph! By: Morgan Hosty ~ On April 22, 2010, the fourth graders of St. Luke School celebrated Earth Day by visiting the Sisters of St. Joseph at the Well. On our field trip we learned about God s Creation. While learning about it, we sang songs about God and the Earth. We went on a nature hike through the forest preserve. We discovered flowers that I have never seen before! There used to be litter on the ground, but people picked it up. There was a large tree with a nest in it. We weren t the only school that went; St. Francis was there too. Three of them were in our group called the butterflies. Some of them were friendly. On the field trip I met new friends, hiked through the woods, and learned about Creation.
