3 Representatives of St. Luke Parish recently joined representatives from five other Oak Park-River Forest congregations (Ascension, St. Giles, St. Edmund, Euclid Avenue United Methodist and Fair Oaks Presbyterian) in the Pine Room of Ascension School to learn how the Illinois Double Value Coupon Program (DVCP) helps LINK cardholders gain more access to healthy produce and other foods bought at farmers markets throughout our area. LINK is the Illinois program that manages federal SNAP (food stamp) benefits. Corey Chatman from Experimental Station Experimental Station, a Hyde Park nonprofit, helps manage the DVCP in Illinois, and its DVCP manager, Corey Chatman, came to discuss the program s goals and methods. At farmers markets that have wireless credit/debit card capabilities, such as the Oak Park Farmers Market, LINK recipients can use their state-issued debit card to buy healthy fruits and vegetables, and DVCP matching funds provide LINK cardholders up to $20 more each visit to buy additional produce. The funds are issued as coupons that can only be redeemed at the Farmers Market. Through cardholder feedback and surveys at Experimental Station s 61 st Street Farmers Market, much has been learned about the impact of the program. In addition to building buying power for LINK Card recipients and customers for the local growers at farmers markets, important shifts in attitude and perception are flowing from the program. LINK users reported that they initially viewed farmers markets as expensive and elitist a place where LINK cardholders feel they didn t really belong. The promotion of DVCP and its extra buying power, in many cases, has been the decisive factor in LINK cardholders becoming regular customers of farmers markets and, more importantly, giving them the benefit of regular access to healthy food. At the Oak Park Farmers Market, DVCP has been so successful in 2012 and 2013 that all of the grant funds were expended before the end of August. When the funds run out, coupons are no longer issued and LINK recipients are turned away disappointed. Last year two parishes (Ascension and St. Edmund) made contributions to extend the season a little longer. The parishes determined that, with a little more organization, other local congregations and individuals will be able to generate sufficient donations to make sure the Double Coupon program lasts the whole season, which ends November 1 in Oak Park. At the March 29 meeting, participants focused on raising enough money to support DVCP for the entire run of the Oak Park Farmers Market. Ascension, St. Giles, St. Edmund and Euclid Avenue Methodist Church have already contributed or pledged money. At all of the Masses next weekend we will have a short reflection given by one of the fathers of the parish, and we will also have a special blessing for all the fathers who are present. Father s Day is a great day for the whole family to worship together. Please join us next weekend. Your regular support is as important during the summer as throughout the rest of the year. Catholic Vacation Bible School Register Now Through June 23 Moms and Dads: we need your help to make this summer s Vacation Bible School (VBS) venture a success! When: July 14-18, 2014 from 6:30-8:00 pm Where: St. Giles Parish-McDonough Hall, 1101 N. Columbian Ave., Oak Park VBS Camping in God s Creation is a collaborative venture with some of the parishes in Oak Park/River Forest/Forest Park for children ages Older children and adult volunteers are also needed to help with set-up and activities. 7 The stars were out at St. Luke as the 8 th graders presented Who Killed Elvis? The Elvis Ate Here Café was filled with small-time crooks, mobsters, a shifty banker, Elvis fans of all ages, a talk show host and crew, the police and café staff. The stage was aglow with satin and sequins when all seven Elvis impersonators vied for the $500 prize. By the end, everyone understood why Elvis is still called The King. The day after the 8 th grade play, St. Luke students celebrated May Crowning. The whole school came together to honor Mary and to recognize this year s First Communicants and school graduates. The 8 th graders carried the statue of Mary to the altar, where she was crowned by the court. The First Communicants honored Mary with flowers. This year Ms. Aimee Devereux reflected on the power of the rosary. We thank the parish community for joining us in this beautiful tradition honoring our Blessed Virgin Mother. 8 The Prime Timers will be playing Bridge tomorrow, Monday, in the Hospitality House. We start at noon and play until 2:30. Newcomers are always welcome. Also, the Stitching Group will be meeting this Wednesday in the Hospitality House at noon. Please come if you are interested in knitting, crocheting, or any kind of needlework. Summer is here, and many of us become more relaxed about what we wear to Mass during the warmer weather. We remind you that even casual attire for Church should be modest and respectful. In particular, we ask you to avoid clothing that is tight fitting is low cut or shows cleavage is especially short shows the stomach or mid-area could in any way be interpreted as provocative or revealing. As a sign of respect for God, Whom we come to worship, as well as for our fellow worshippers, your thoughtful attention to wearing appropriate attire to Church is greatly appreciated. Thank you. As the war in Afghanistan continues, let us pray that all our military personnel may be kept safe from harm and return safely home to their loved ones. We pray especially for PFC Jacob Dystrka, who died recently. May he rest in peace. And let us pray that the leaders of our nation and of all nations may work untiringly to end all war and violence and to build a true and lasting peace among all peoples.
