4 Youth Group Today! Our monthly Youth Group will meet today (Sunday) at 6:00 pm in the Hospitality House. All high school and 8th grade youths are invited for supper and a program of games, fun activities, and discussion. Our next outing will take us to Our Lady of the Angels Mission on Saturday, March 2, to assist with the food pantry and clothing distribution to families in need on Chicago s West Side. This will be a great opportunity to log some service hours for Confirmation as well as a great experience helping others. Come to the meeting this weekend or contact Fr. Steve for more details on the trip. This Tuesday, January 22, is the 46 th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision by the U.S. Supreme Court that legalized abortion-on-demand in our country. Nevertheless, the Catholic Church continues to proclaim the dignity and sanctity of all human life from the moment of conception on. The U.S. Bishops have declared January 22 to be a Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children, and St. Luke will celebrate both of our morning Masses with prayers for the Mass For Giving Thanks to God for the Gift of Human Life. We also will have a Mass of Life for St. Luke School students on Wednesday at 9:15 am, and all parishioners are welcome to attend Note that this means our second regular Mass on Wednesday will start at 8:00 am this week. Men s Group To Meet Saturday The Men s Discussion Group will have its next monthly meeting next Saturday, January 26, from 10:00 to 11:00 am in Waldron Hall. All men in the parish are invited to drop in and share what s going on in your life, work, and faith and learn what s happening on in the wider community. 4 WELCOME TO ST. LUKE River Forest, IL The Human Person, and an Antidote to Pornography One of St. John Paul II s great gifts to the Church was the Theology of the Body: a beautiful new vision of the human person and the gift of sexuality. The essential vocation of the human person, being created in the image and likeness of God, is to live in relationships of properly ordered love that reveal something of God s presence. However, our society has become hyper-saturated with lust, and humanity now struggles with corrupted notions of what love and human sexuality really is. One tragic consequence of this is the epidemic of pornography, which harms individuals, families, and society. To address these topics, St. Luke Parish will host an adults-only presentation, which will outline the disconnect between love and lust, present a vision of freedom and hope, and offer tools and resources to help people protect themselves and their families from the damaging effects of pornography. All are welcome to this free program, so plan on joining us on Tuesday, February 5, at 7:00 pm in Waldron Hall. Attention: All Altar Servers, Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors, and Ushers Submit Your Dates This Week! 6 St. Luke s Annual Dinner Dance & Auction This year s Sapphire & Gold Gala will honor Dr. John and Michele Lynch Saturday, February 23 Oak Park Country Club The Lynches have been active supporters of St. Luke Parish and School for over 50 years. John s parents, Mary and Jim, raised eight children, all of whom graduated from St. Luke. Their children are Jim (1965), Ann (1966), Mary (1968), John and Joan (1970), Daniel (1972), Frances (1974), and Sheila (1972). It was a sacrifice for John s parents financially to send them all to St. Luke s, but they recognized the importance of receiving a strong Catholic education. John and Michele met in 1983 and have been active participants at St. Luke for nearly 25 years. They have cochaired the Dinner Dance and Auction event. Michele served as room mom in the school for multiple years and John has been a Eucharistic minister and lector for over 40 years. John also ran the Men s Club for three years and has volunteered as coach of the boys basketball team for more than 30 years. He continues to coach at St. Luke. Michele graduated from DePaul University in 1979 and became a C.P.A. that year. She worked in Public Accounting and then served as Chief Financial Officer at Misericordia Heart of Mercy. In those years, she worked closely with her aunt, Sr. Rosemary Connelly, who is Executive Director of the huge program for children and adults with developmental disabilities. John went to Loyola University, where he played on the basketball team from He was very excited to see his alma mater do so well in reaching last year s Final Four. After graduating from Loyola in 1978 he continued his education in Loyola s dental school and graduated in He practices with his two sisters and partners, Frances and Sheila. Together they share two offices in River Forest and downtown Chicago. They feel fortunate that many of their patients are also parishioners of St. Luke. The Lynch Dental Center has been a strong supporter of St. Luke Parish and School for many years. They have supported the annual Walk-a-Thon and aided various other school activities. It has always been important for the family to support Catholic education. In addition, the Lynch Dental Center dedicates time to providing dental care to the less fortunate. For many years, residents with severe disabilities from Misericordia have come to Lynch Dental Center to receive the care they need. John was also instrumental in the development of a dental clinic on the grounds of the Misericordia campus. For his contributions, John received the Sr. Rosemary Connelly Medallion in 2003 for his contributions to Misericordia. John and Michele have four wonderful children. Their oldest, Jimmy, graduated from St. Luke in 2002 and then St. Ignatius High School and Miami University. John and Michele s other children participated in St. Luke Religious Education Program. All of their children were baptized and received their First Communion and Confirmation at St. Luke. Kevin graduated from Oak Park River Forest High School and attended Dominican University. Their youngest son, Matt, graduated from St. Ignatius and graduated from Eastern Kentucky University. Their youngest child, Maura, also attended St. Ignatius before graduating from Columbia University. When asked about their thoughts on St. Luke, John and Michele wrote, St. Luke has always had a special place in our hearts. Our kids have been baptized and confirmed here. The education in their faith at St. Luke has been instrumental and molded them into competent and moral young adults. The relationships we have made through the St. Luke community is something we cherish and will continue to cherish for the rest of our lives. St. Luke is filled with wonderful families and has done so much good for our community, and we feel very honored and humbled to be recognized for the small part we play in making St. Luke a thriving parish. Thank you! 6 WELCOME TO ST. LUKE River Forest, IL

7 Mark your calendars now and plan to join us for St. Luke School s biggest fund-raiser of the year our Sapphire and Gold Gala Dinner Dance & Auction on February 23. Invitations will be going out soon, but now is the time to consider ways to recognize and thank our honorees John and Michele Lynch and this year s recipients of the Heart of St. Luke Award, the Dooley Family, for their contributions to the St. Luke community. Your presence also helps ensure that St. Luke School can continue to provide a quality Catholic education almost a century after its humble beginnings in There are several ways you and/or your business can contribute to the Dinner Dance & Auction s program. However, you must act quickly! Congratulatory Tribute Advertisements: Place a personal tribute ad in the Dinner Dance program book, which will be distributed to more than 300 Dinner Dance attendees and supporters. For details on how you can extend your personal congratulations to the Lynches and the Dooleys, contact Sheila Price, St. Luke s Director of Stewardship and Development, at or at sprice@stlukeparish.org. The deadline for tribute ads is February 8. Program Book Advertisements: You can also promote your business through direct advertising in the Dinner Dance program book. This is an ideal way to gain positive exposure in the St. Luke community as well as making a direct contribution to the school. For full details and to place a business ad, contact Mary Ann O Connell at mdegroff@att.net before the January 31 deadline. Auction donations: Do you have some unusual items that might spark bidding in our Live or Silent Auction? Sports or theater tickets, airline miles or hotel stays, vacation homes, professional services or behind-the-scenes tours, autographed artwork or memorabilia? If you have an item you d like to contribute, contact Sheila Price at today! Ministers of Care Serve Those Who Can t Attend Mass For some time now, you may have occasionally noticed after the reception of Communion, a minister who stands to the left of the altar and receives a special blessing. Not at every Mass, but occasionally. These are our MINISTERS of CARE. These trained ministers bring the Eucharist to the absent members of our parish community who are ill or homebound. They bring their pyx ( a small vessel used to carry the Host outside of church) up to the altar and the priest provides the Host for them and offers a special blessing over them as they are sent forth to visit the elderly and the sick who are in hospitals, or are homebound or in assisted living or nursing facilities. Pyx/Autom Supply Previously here or in other parishes, ministers have come up with their pyx in the Communion Procession as they receive the Eucharist and they would ask for and obtain additional Hosts for the people they visit. This practice is no longer followed at our parish. The Minister of Care is a mandated minister, that is, they are trained and serve for a fixed period of time, usually three years. They are the only laypersons permitted to take the Communion to someone outside of the Mass. They follow a fixed ritual each time they visit the sick, praying with the sick one and reading the daily scripture to them. If you, or someone you know, would like to request a visit, please call the rectory during normal office hours, and we will put you in touch with the coordinator for this ministry who will arrange to have one of these very dedicated ministers come out to visit you or your loved one. THANK YOU! JANUARY 20, 2019 Second Sunday in Ordinary Time 7

8 Thoughts about Palestine Current events often come to our attention without context. Some of us do not remember or even know the history of this conflict. Why in Jerusalem are there holy sites so important to Christians and Muslims as well as Jews? It is a challenge to learn the facts on the ground. Are people in Gaza losing access to pure water? Are there Palestinians who have lived in refugee camps since 1948? Are there only about 100,000 Greek or Latin Catholics left in the Holy Land? The Roman Catholic Church has consistently spoken out in support of the rights and well-being of the Palestinian people and likewise supported the rights and security of the citizens of Israel. The Church has consistently urged a negotiated settlement and opposed any military solution. Rev. Donald Senior, CP, spoke at length at Dominican University s Siena Center in December 2016 about a Catholic perspective on Israel and Palestine. He closed with this reflection: The Eternal Word became flesh not in the abstract but in time and space and in a particular time, the first third of the first century, and in a particular place, the Holy Land, the very soil of present-day Israel and Palestine. Jesus was baptized probably in the Jordan River near Jericho and the Dead Sea, probably on the Jordanian side of the river. He ventured into Lebanon in the region of Tyre and Sidon. And he went up to the border of present-day Syria Palestinian children in Hebron. when he traveled to Caesarea Philippi, and probably gazed on the beauty of Mt. Hermon. If Matthew s account has historical value, Jesus and his family fled to Egypt, across the Gaza strip a tradition sacred to Coptic Christians. These places and these people shaped the consciousness, the religious language, the imagery, and the character of Jesus life. The tone and feel of our Christian faith would no doubt be quite different still valid and saving but quite different if Photo by Justin McIntosh/Wikimedia Commons Jesus had been born in Peking or Buenos Aires or Paris or rural Kenya or, for that matter, Peoria, Illinois. But he was born in the land of Israel; he was Jewish and was formed in the heritage of the biblical peoples. And he would die there, under the jurisdiction of Imperial Rome. It was this palette, this palette of the Holy Land, that shaped the human face of Jesus, the face that reveals God to us. And for this reason alone, we Christians should forever care about all the peoples of the Holy Land whose ancestors gave us this gift, and pray for their peace and well-being. ~ Gail Hafner, a member of St. Luke s Peace and Justice Committee and of the small local Interfaith Action Group on Peace and Justice in Israel and Palestine Photo by Gbecker248/Wikimedia Commons 6 WELCOME TO ST. 9 Teens & Adults: Help Your Faith Grow! Something magical seems to happen when you share something. Meals seem tastier when others join us. Family vacations are more fun than solo trips. And teachers often remark that they learn more from their students than they knew. The same kind of thing can happen if you share your faith with the students in St. Luke s Religious Education Program. Teacher aides are especially needed for the 3:30 to 4:30 pm session on Wednesdays, which serves children in 1st through 4th grades. While catechists plan lessons and lead classes, aides help the catechist by preparing materials, helping with classroom activities, and assisting individual students with assignments. This position is open to 7th, 8th, and high school-age students, who may want to accrue service hours, as well as adults who want to practice the faith pillar of service by donating a gift of time.
