It s used here courtesy of Wikimedia Commons. WELCOME TO ST. LUKE River Forest, IL FROM THE PASTOR Today is Good Shepherd Sunday on what happens to also be the World Day of Prayer for Vocations. In today s Gospel, we meet Jesus, who is the Good Shepherd. He knows His sheep and lays down his life for them, and is raised up again. While we are all called to imitate Christ, priests and religious are expected to more closely imitate Jesus. They are not hired help, so to speak but rather, they give their whole lives to the Church. As Pope Francis has said, priests are supposed to be shepherds with the smell of the sheep, that is, to be with the people and to closely identify with their trials of life. Those who are called to be shepherds must themselves learn to hear the voice of the Good Shepherd. Some 28 years ago, as I was returning home from a business trip to Texas for Zenith, I looked out the airplane window over Corpus Christi and reflected on the work our engineering team had accomplished on a successful production approval run. Sure, it had all gone well and management was happy, but I couldn t see how any of this would make much difference in people s lives in the overall scheme of things 5 to 10 years into the future. I reflected on my life and decided this was the turning point for me. I became more aware of the inner voice of God, His Holy Spirit, inviting me, encouraging and asking me: Come, follow me! The first people I met when moving into the seminary were Jim, who had worked as a much-in-demand cameraman for ESPN sports channel, and Tim, who had been an insurance fraud claim investigator. Our own Father Steven worked successfully in the graphics arts field before hearing his personal call and the list goes on and on. The stories of a call to priestly service vary from person to person, but that is wherein the beauty of it can be found. From those who enter as young men or the not-soyoung, all are asked to carry on the shepherding of God s flock. Please pray and encourage more to follow and pursue the call, the whisperings of the Holy Spirit that says: Come, follow me. Come, follow the Good Shepherd! ~Fr. Szmyd

Our Lenten study groups have issued a challenge to all St. Luke parishioners: Spend one hour alone with Jesus in an empty church sometime before the feast of Pentecost. It can be any church, as long as it s peaceful enough for you to be able to listen to what Jesus may say to you in the moments of your silence. It s an idea recommended by Catholic evangelist Matthew Kelly in his book Rediscover Jesus, which the groups studied this past Lent. You can learn more in an hour of silence than you can in a year from books, Kelly wrote. Please let us know how your time in church compares with Kelly s! Communion Visits and Ministry of Care A parish priest or Minister of Care will be happy to visit those who are sick or homebound. Please call the rectory to make arrangements. Baptism Baptisms take place on the first and third Sundays of each month, except during Lent. Preparation meetings are held on the first Monday of every month for the parents of children who will be baptized. Arrangements can be made by calling the rectory. Marriage Couples wishing to be married should call the rectory to set up an appointment with one of the parish priests at least six months in advance of the desired wedding date. Anointing of the Sick Elderly parishioners, those in poor health or who are anticipating surgery can call the rectory to arrange to receive the sacrament of anointing.
