In other words, as baptized Catholics there is only one gift that we need to give to Jesus the gift of ourselves. Surrender yourself to God, place your trust in Him, and allow the Holy Spirit to work through you for the greater glory of God. 3 Justice, Only Justice, You Shall Pursue JANUARY God, who are unity in three holy persons Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, you have called us to live in peace with all people. You have also called us to work toward unity in purpose to spread the Gospel to all nations. Graciously give us the courage and strength to work toward unity, and act toward each other as brothers and sisters. We ask this in the unity of God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen. The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, which starts this Friday, is actually an octave of eight days beginning January 18 and ending on January 25. It originally bracketed the feast of The Chair of Peter (which was later moved to February 22) and that of The Conversion of St. Paul, honoring two great pillars of the Christian Church. The origins of this event is credited to Paul James Wattson, a former Episcopalian priest, and Mother Lurana White, who founded the Franciscan Society of the Atonement in the early 20th century in Graymoor, N.Y. The so-called Graymoor Friars and Sisters selected this observance to promote unity among Anglicans and Roman Catholics. The idea of uniting all Christian churches soon caught on, and by the 1930s more and more Christians joined in the annual event. The emphasis on both Peter and Paul fits into the rationale of the octave. Peter is seen as the source of unity within the Christian tradition. Paul is highlighted due to his vision of bringing all nations to Christ. The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is an opportunity to pray for and promote respect, understanding, and, hopefully, eventual unity among all those who have accepted Christ. Suggestions for prayer and education are distributed each year, emphasizing a jointly chosen theme. This year s theme is based on the passage of Deuteronomy 16:20: Justice, Only Justice, You Shall Pursue. The theme, was chosen for its powerful message of promoting truth, equality, and unity in the pursuit of justice for all: the unborn, the poor, the sick, the elderly, refugees and those who exploited by traffickers and sex abusers, and all those abandoned or rejected. A perfect reading for this week, suggests theology professor Dr. Paul Louis Metzger, would be Pope Francis recent document Gaudete et Exsultate (On the Call to Holiness in Today s World). It s available online for free at The ultimate thrust of this special week of prayer, however, is to invite Christians throughout the world to pray in communion with the prayer of Jesus that [we] all may be one (John 17:21). So join in the prayers offered this week using the suggested words at left or your own. Liturgical Publications Inc JANUARY 13, 2019 The Baptism of the Lord 3

Prayers for Unity Hate cannot drive out hate, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once observed in one of his sermons when he was just starting out as a leader in the civil rights movement LPi more than 60 years ago. Only love can do that. St. Luke School will be closed for the national holiday honoring Rev. King s conscience-building achievements on Monday, January 21. So the school students will participate in a special Prayer Service for Unity that celebrates Dr. King s dream of justice and equality for all Americans this Friday at 2:15 pm in church. All parishioners are welcome to attend. Youth Group Next Sunday Our monthly Youth Group will be next Sunday, January 20, at 6:00 pm. All high school and junior high youths are invited to come for supper in the Hospitality House and a program of fun activities. All are welcome to bring a friend and enjoy a relaxing break from homework! Stitching Group Launches New Prayer Shawl Project: Knitters Needed The Amen Stitching Group will meet this Friday to talk about its newest ministry making prayer shawls for those who are seriously ill. The small group has been making baptismal gowns for infants receiving the sacrament of baptism at St. Luke for more than a year. We started receiving requests for prayer shawls, said the group s coordinator Betsy Maloney, and we d like to know if others are interested in knitting or crocheting shawls. Many parishes offer these hand-made shawls that bring comfort to those suffering from cancer or other debilitating illnesses. The Amen Group has patterns and materials. We just need three or four people who can work on these at our group meetings or at home, said Betsy. The group usually meets from 9:30 to 11:30 am in the Hospitality House every third Friday, and newcomers are welcome. Or contact Betsy at WELCOME TO ST. LUKE River Forest, IL Next week we will take up the Collection for the Church in Latin America, a place where dire poverty, the rural terrain, and a shortage of ministers are obstacles to millions of Catholics practicing their faith. Your support provides training for lay leaders, catechesis, seminarian and religious formation, and many other services to help extend our faith to those who long to share the Body of Christ with us. 5 St. Luke School Young Authors Now Published Mrs. Martin s kindergarten class are now published authors well, self-published authors. The 14 students worked hard on writing and coloring illustrations for the book they titled God s Pumpkins. The story was inspired by our learning that God created everything, including pumpkins, explained Mrs. Martin, while expressing our love of what God has created. Best of all, they each received a copy to take home for Christmas. No word yet on a possible sequel! New Co-ed Spiritual Group St. Catherine-St. Lucy Church is starting a new discussion series this Monday for men and women that s based on talks by a dynamic pair of retreat leaders on issues of gender, spirituality, and Divinity awareness. Cynthia Bourgeault and Richard Rohr created a DVD of their talks at a conference, which will be played in parts over nine weeks followed by time to reflect, share, and pray. Duplicate sessions will be offered each Monday at 1:00 pm and 7:30 pm at the church, which is at 38 N. Austin Boulevard in Oak Park. Everyone is welcome to any of the weekly sessions. For more info, call Shelby Boblick at or St. Catherine-St. Lucy at Mark your calendars now and plan to join us for St. Luke School s biggest fund-raiser of the year our Sapphire and Gold Gala Dinner Dance & Auction on February 23. Invitations will be going out soon, but now is the time to consider ways to recognize and thank our honorees John and Michele Lynch and this year s recipients of the Heart of St. Luke Award, the Dooley Family, for their contributions to the St. Luke community and help St. Luke School continue to provide a quality Catholic education almost a century after its humble beginnings in There are two ways you and/or your business can contribute to the support that the Dinner Dance & Auction provides for students at St. Luke Parish School. However, you must act quickly!
