3 The 2019 Annual Catholic Appeal In today s Gospel, we hear the story of Jesus calling the apostles Peter, James, and John to do something more important with their lives than they likely did not even know they were capable of doing. By now, you should have received a letter from Cardinal Blase Cupich concerning something each of us is asked to do that will further Christ s mission in the Church. The Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA) is an annual fund-raising campaign that supports the many parishes, schools, ministries, programs, and agencies that serve the educational, physical, and spiritual needs of the people in the Archdiocese of Chicago. It also includes a portion that helps Catholic Relief Services to serve additional people around the world, regardless of religious affiliation, whose lives are devastated by natural disasters, illnesses, wars, and famine. Faith is alive in parishes and schools, soup kitchens and counseling centers, on street corners and in churches. It s lived through people of all backgrounds, from every neighborhood. People everywhere come together to support one another. It is in this spirit that the Appeal exists: to bring support gifts, and build strong communities through faith and your generosity. All contributions and generosity are deeply appreciated, much needed, and make a tremendous difference in the lives of many individuals and families across the archdiocese, which covers Cook and Lake counties. Each of us is responsible for the well-being of others within our archdiocese and throughout world. The Annual Catholic Appeal is an opportunity to meaningfully support Catholic education, faith formation, community life ministries and programs for peace and justice here and everywhere. Careful thought is given to the use of each and every gift. They are gifts to support God s work, and we use them accordingly. This is a year-long campaign, so if it helps, you may choose to spread out your gift over months, and reminders will be sent to you. 4 Phone Drive to Help Domestic Violence Victims Remember to check your closets, basement, and attic for any old wireless phones and accessories that can be donated to the Domestic Violence Outreach Ministry s annual used phone collection through March 3. The equipment can be mobile phones, batteries, chargers, or other accessories in any condition and manufactured by any service provider. HopeLine from Verizon Wireless converts the donated equipment into valuable resources for nonprofit organizations and agencies that support domestic violence victims locally and nationwide. Just drop your items in the donation box in the church vestibule at any of the weekend Masses this month. First communicants Enjoy Their Day with Jesus Our First Communicants took a step closer to their big day in May at their Jesus Day retreat last Saturday. With the help of some of our 7th graders, the children reflected on what receiving Jesus for the first time will mean to them, participated in a tour of the church, and created banners for their big day, which is coming up on May 4. Many thanks also to Fr. John and Fr. Steve, Deacon Terry Norton, Kitti McSorley, and Dorothy Zajac for their help in making this day possible. THE THREE T s TIME TALENT TREASURE Gifts are not just tangible, but often grace-filled moments of laughter, friendship, joy, and happiness. Living a stewardship way of life is being intentional about prayer, service, and giving. It is about acknowledging the many gifts around us. Because of the good stewards in the pews, we have many gifts at St. Luke. The sacred space is maintained and beautiful. The ministries and organizations are plentiful and welcoming of new members. We celebrate daily Mass and have beautiful music to enhance the Sunday liturgies. We are grateful for the committed volunteers who grace our faith community in so many ways. Are you one of them? If so, thank you! If not, consider joining us in a stewardship way of life. Start by acknowledging the gifts in your life. Spend some time in thankful prayer to the Lord, and think about how you might be able to join in with a gift of your time, talents. Stewardship is the act of acknowledging our gifts and sharing them with others. It is the activity of the disciples, and we are each called to respond. Not sure how you can get started? Baptism Baptisms take place on the first and third Sundays of each month, except during Lent. Preparation meetings are held on the first Monday of every month for the parents of children who will be baptized. Arrangements can be made by calling the rectory. Marriage Couples wishing to be married should call the rectory to set up an appointment with one of the parish priests at least six months in advance of the desired wedding date. Anointing of the Sick Elderly parishioners, those in poor health or who are anticipating surgery can call the rectory to arrange to receive the sacrament of anointing.
