4 Your 2018 Contribution Statements Coming Soon Statements showing contributions to St. Luke Parish during 2018 will be mailed soon. This statement may be useful in the preparation of your income taxes. If you find that your records do not agree with ours, please contact the Parish Office ( ) and we will rectify any errors. St. Luke Parish depends on the generous support of all our members to provide our ministries and to meet our basic operating needs. We greatly appreciate your commitment to contribute your share! Deadline Today for Input Into Liturgical Ministers Schedules If you haven t already entered your information for the next liturgical ministry schedule, please do so today! Check and update the following information in your Ministry Pro Schedule account for yourself and any of your children who are altar servers: Home Address Phone (home and cell) and Service (Mass) Preferences Unavailable dates for this period We will be creating the new spring schedule covering the period of March 1 through June 7 using the data you enter. Thanks for your cooperation! First Communion Preparation Jesus Day All St. Luke children who will be receiving their First Eucharist this spring will gather for the special day of preparation next Saturday, February 2. This is a full morning of activities for the children and their parents, such as making their Communion banners and taking a tour of the church. The children will also have a chance to reflect on a question we all can relate to: What will it be like when I receive Jesus in Holy Communion? Please continue to pray for the children as they prepare to make their First Eucharist on May 4. Prime Timers Valentine Tea Time Tomorrow (Monday) is Bridge Day for the Prime Timers. They play from Noon to 2:30 pm in the Hospitality House, and newcomers are always welcome. The Prime Timers Valentine Tea will be on Tuesday, February 12, at 3:30 pm in the Hospitality House. It is always such a fun event with homemade scones, assorted finger sandwiches, cakes and, of course, tea. The cost is $25 and must be paid in advance. Please call Noreen O Malley at by February 5 to make a reservation. Blessing of Throats February 3 is the traditional feast day of St. Blaise, physician, bishop, and martyr. He was legendary in his times during the 4th century for healing people and animals, but the story of his cure of a child choking on a fish bone was made famous in The Acts of St. Blaise four centuries later. Since then the saint has been universally invoked for his intercession against injuries and illnesses of the throat. Because his feast falls on a Sunday this year, the Blessing of Throats that s long been associated with this popular saint will be offered individually at the end of all our Sunday (and vigil) Masses. 4 WELCOME TO ST. LUKE River Forest, IL Adoration Next Saturday Everyone is invited for our monthly time of prayer and Adoration before the Blessed Sacrament next Saturday, February 2. Right after the 8:00 Mass, the prayers will begin with the rosary led by our daily Rosary Group. Then the Blessed Sacrament will be exposed for silent prayer, and adoration will continue until 9:15 when Benediction will be offered. The Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation will also be available immediately after Mass. If you are moving out of our parish, please call the Parish Office or stlukeparish@stlukeparish.org to let us know so we can update our records. Thank you!

Saint Luke Parish School Ashland Avenue, River Forest Can t make the Open House? Call today to schedule your tour! The Human Person and Freedom to Live in God s Image One of St. John Paul II s great gifts to the Church was the Theology of the Body, a beautiful new vision of the human person and the gift of sexuality. The essential vocation of the human person, being created in the image and likeness of God is to live in relationships of properly ordered love that reveal something of God s presence. However, our society has become hyper-saturated with lust, and humanity now struggles with corrupted notions of what love and human sexuality really is. One tragic consequence of this is the epidemic of pornography, which harms individuals, families, and society. Man cannot live without love... his life is senseless if love is not revealed to him ~St John Paul II To address these topics, St. Luke Parish will host an adults-only presentation presented by Dumb Ox Ministries that will outline the disconnect between love and lust, present a vision of freedom and hope, and offer tools and resources to help people protect themselves and their families from the damaging effects of pornography. Dumb Ox Ministries will present their youth program to our 6th-8th grade students on Monday afternoon. All adults are invited to attend this free program on Tuesday night, February 5. Please join us at 7:00 pm in Waldron Hall. Image Archdiocese of Vilnius, Lithuania JANUARY 27, 2019 Third Sunday in Ordinary Time 5

6 St. Luke s 30 Annual Dinner Dance & Auction th Saturday, February 23 Oak Park Country Club 2nd Annual Heart of St. Luke Parish School Award Invitations to our Sapphire & Gold Gala Event are out, and as you know from last week s bulletin our honorees this year are Dr. John and Michele Lynch. However, we also will be awarding our 2nd Annual Heart of St. Luke Parish School Award on this night to a wonderful family who have given countless hours to our school and parish community the Dooley Family. Jim and Anna moved to St. Luke Parish in 2000, but Jim was no stranger to this parish. They actually moved into the house that Jim grew up in. Jim attended St. Luke School followed by Fenwick High School, and Loyola and Roosevelt Universities, and he can recall countless stories from his days watching the parish change and grow through the years. Anna grew up in Chicago, attending Immaculate Heart of Mary Elementary School, Madonna High School, and DePaul University. Their son Jimmy attended St. Luke School, Oak Park River Forest High School, and Roosevelt University. Daughter Claire also just graduated from St. Luke School and is currently a freshman at Trinity High School. Jim s family has been a part of St. Luke Parish since His Uncle Frank was in the third graduating class of St. Luke School, and Jim s five brothers also attended the school. Jim, a musician, has performed for over five decades with the renowned Dooley Brothers Band, including many St. Patrick s dinner dances at St. Luke s. Anna is a project manager at TOMY International, and has been with the company more than 20 years in a variety of positions. She is winding up a seven-year term as St. Luke School s Athletic Director. The Dooleys say they have endeavored to give back to the school and parish some of the wonderful love and support that they have received over the years. Jim has lent his musical talents to a variety of school and parish events and Masses. He was the organizer of The Guitar Dads, a performing collection of fathers of school students. He has strolled through the school with his guitar over the years for many events, including most recently playing Christmas carols accompanied by Father John on trumpet. Both Jim and Anna are also avid photographers and have captured myriad scenes of past Dinner Dances and many other school and parish activities for the parish bulletin, school yearbook and social use. As students at St. Luke School, Jimmy and Claire shared their parents passion for music and service to the parish. They were long-time members of the parish children s choirs, school cantors, and altar servers, as well as participating in school athletics. The family has especially worked together as an extension of Anna s 10-year term on the school s Athletic Committee, coordinating home game concessions and acting as gym monitors. Jim is also an avid local church and school historian, having collected hundreds of photos, artifacts, and memorabilia dating back to the 1920s. The Dooleys have strived to be an active presence in the school and parish community, enjoying getting to know both older and new members of the parish. And more recently, with Jimmy s untimely passing this past August, they were very grateful to have received a tremendous amount of support from the entire St. Luke community. Anna, Jim, and Claire would like everyone to know how this support is so appreciated, and has forever changed their lives. Regardless of how long you ve been in this parish, you ve probably seen one or more of the Dooleys and benefitted from their always smiling presence. Now that you know a little more about them, please join us in thanking them for all their time and caring contributions to our school and parish community as they receive this year s Heart of St. Luke Award on February 23! 6 WELCOME TO ST. LUKE River Forest, IL

9 Youth Ministry Our 2019 Summer Service Trip Will Be Heading to... All 8th grade grads and high school teens are invited to the most amazing Catholic service trip ever! You can expect to work, serve, ponder, dance, build, pray, make friends, heal, paint, sing, encounter, hammer, celebrate, help, saw, play, repair, laugh, and be transformed during our week with the Catholic Heart WorkCamp in Calmar, Iowa. You have hands capable of helping others, you have a heart formed to care for others, and you have a soul made to bond friends old and new into a more loving, joyful community as you serve the hidden presence of Christ in others. Our group will depart early Sunday, July 7, and return Friday evening, July 12. Talk with your parents, fill out the application, send in the deposit, attend the pre-trip formation meetings, pray, pack, and then caravan out to rural Iowa with an open heart. The total cost is $380. The first $100 will be the deposit which officially holds your place, and is due with the application. Applications received without a deposit are incomplete and will not reserve your spot. The remaining $280 is due by April 28. The return trip will feature some hot stops & cool excursions! Space is very limited, so don t delay! Also, adult chaperones are needed to make this trip possible. If interested, please contact Fr. Steve as soon as possible. Thanks! Service Day in the City Calling all 8th grade and high school students! Sign up now for our next Youth Ministry outing on Saturday, March 2. We ll be distributing food and clothing to needy families via a mobile food pantry at Our Lady of the Angels Mission in Chicago s Humboldt Park neighborhood. This is a perfect opportunity for any youth who needs service hours or Confirmation mercy experiences. Parents and young adults are welcome, too, but everyone must sign up in advance so we can coordinate carpooling/chaperones! Go to our parish website at stlukeparish.org and click on the Youth Ministry tab to access the downloadable signup form. For more information on this event, contact Fr. Steven at sbauer@stlukeparish.org or Teens & Adults: Help Your Faith Grow! Something magical seems to happen when you share something. Meals seem tastier when others join us. Family vacations are more fun than solo trips. And teachers often remark that they learn more from their students than they knew. The same kind of thing can happen if you share your faith with the students in St. Luke s Religious Education Program. Teacher aides are especially needed for the 3:30 to 4:30 pm session on Wednesdays, which serves children in 1st through 4th grades. While catechists plan lessons and lead classes, aides help the catechist by preparing materials, helping with classroom activities, and assisting individual students with assignments. This position is open to 7th, 8th, and high school-age students, who may want to accrue service hours, as well as adults who want to practice the faith pillar of service by donating a gift of time. Interested in learning more? Contact our Religious Education Coordinator Michelle Dal Pino at or mdalpino@stlukeparish.org. Men Needed at Mission, too! St. Luke Men s Club put out a call for volunteers to help the Mission of Our Lady of the Angels on Saturday, February 16, from 9:00 am to Noon. A group of St. Luke volunteers who stopped by there last weekend had their hands full moving boxes, assembling shelves, stocking food, and painting. The sisters who run the mission are very organized and energetic about making your time count, they said. The mission is located at 3808 West Iowa Street in Chicago. Afterwards, the group plans to stop for a burger and beverages. Anyone who is interested in participating should contact John Nowicki at jnowicki@lcmcapital.com or Andy Rauh at rarauh76@gmail.com. Join In Prayer with the Pope Pope Francis invites Catholics around the world to pray with him each month for a special intention that has come to his attention in the news or on one of his pastoral visits. In February, please pray about Human Trafficking: For a generous welcoming of the victims of human trafficking, for enforced prostitution laws, and an end to violence.
