3 In the midst of Chicago s rainiest month of June, the sun shined bright on St. Luke Church as Father Kenneth Fischer celebrated his final Mass as pastor of the parish he has ministered to over the past 15 years. The celebration on June 28 was as bright and upbeat as the weather as staff and parishioners from St. Luke and some of his previous parish assignments, friends and family, and special visitor Bishop Quinn Weitzel, MM, attended the Mass of Thanksgiving followed by a reception in the school gym to mark Father Ken s start in retirement 44 years after he was ordained in Rome. I thank God for life, good health, my family and all the parishioners I ve gotten to know over the past 44 years, he told the packed church after receiving the gift of a picture of the pelican artwork on the church altar, an Apostolic blessing from the Vatican, and a bound book of well wishes from parishioners. I do keep all of you in my prayers each day, and I hope you will keep me in yours. Next Sunday, July 12, the Parish Pastoral Council will host another opportunity to meet and welcome Fr. Steven at the Coffee on the Plaza after the 9:00 and 10:30 Masses. The Archdiocese s Theology on Tap gatherings for young adults are underway at 25 locations all across the Chicago area. Ken Fischer s farewell celebration last Sunday, we were able to gather together in thankful praise of God for the blessings God has given St. Luke Parish these past 15 years. It was a most festive occasion, beginning with a beautiful Mass with Fr. Ken s family present as well as his friends from previous parish assignments. All participated in heartfelt prayer and song with full voice, accompanied by our choirs who did a spectacular job of helping us to pray and reflect. The church was beautifully decorated and packed to capacity. Our school gym was transformed into a most festive banquet! So many parishioners and staff served as ministers at the Mass or contributed many hours of time in the preparations and arrangements, extra rehearsals, meetings, set-up, and clean-up. To you all, we are most grateful. Fr. Ken appears to be extremely happy to be starting a new phase of his life, having chosen to serve as a retired resident priest at a parish within the Archdiocese of Chicago. While he loved his parish ministry, he has the added bonus of not being required to attend any more meetings, which I am sure he sees as a most welcome blessing. Making transitions in life can be an arduous and complicated process. In the life of priest, it is something that happens every few years but has a unique blend of challenges within it, some positive and some less so. Major transition occurs whenever there is a switch in the parishes we serve, type of ministry (i.e., parish ministry or specialized such as vicar for clergy, director of an office, seminary faculty, etc.). To use a gardening analogy, we are uprooted and transplanted into other soil! During the period of transition, which can be painful because it involves loss, it is important to realize that the period of acclimatization requires trust and patience on the part of all the parish and its parishioners and the priest himself. We need to be patient with one another and trust that the Lord and His Spirit will continue to be with us and guide us in this transition. We need to pray for one another! It is an exciting time at St. Luke Parish. New roles, new faces, new opportunities. This weekend we welcome Fr. Steven Bauer, who will be St. Luke s new associate pastor. He will be introducing himself at all Masses this weekend and at the Coffee on the Plaza next Sunday, July 12. Please join me in giving him a warm welcome to our community! Fr. Szmyd

5 Since Under the Ginkgo Tree is not available for our annual summer event, the Prime Timers will be taking the train to Geneva, Illinois, for lunch and shopping on Thursday, July 23. We will leave the Hospitality House parking lot at 10:30 am for the 10:50 train. Pope Francis has repeatedly emphasized that it is incomprehensible and alarming that people continue to suffer discrimination, restriction of their rights and even persecution for publicly professing their faith. Undeniably, Serious violations inflicted on this basic right [religious freedom] are causes of serious concern, and all people must work to defend the intangible dignity of the human person against every attack. Yet, religious liberty continues to be under threat, even in the United States: HHS mandate for sterilization, contraception, and abortion-inducing drugs. The mandate of the Department of Health and Human Services forces religious institutions to facilitate and/or fund a product contrary to their own moral teaching. Further, the federal government tries to define which religious institutions are religious enough to merit protection of their religious liberty. Catholic foster care and adoption services. Boston, San Francisco, the District of Columbia, and the State of Illinois have driven local Catholic Charities out of the business of providing adoption or foster care services by revoking their licenses, by ending their government contracts, or both because those Charities refused to place children with same-sex couples or unmarried opposite-sex couples who cohabit. State immigration laws. Several states have passed laws that forbid what they deem as harboring of undocumented immigrants and what the Church deems Christian charity and pastoral care to these immigrants. Discrimination against small church congregations. New York City adopted a policy that barred the Bronx Household of Faith and other churches from renting public schools on weekends for worship services, even though non-religious groups could rent the same schools for many other uses. Discrimination against Catholic humanitarian services. After years of excellent performance by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops Migration and Refugee Services (MRS) in administering contract services for victims of human trafficking, the federal government changed its contract specifications to require MRS to provide or refer for contraceptive and abortion services in violation of Catholic teaching. In its over-100-year history, the University of California Hastings College of Law has denied student organization status to only one group, the Christian Legal Society, because it required its leaders to be Christian and to abstain from sexual activity outside of marriage.
