LUKE River Forest, IL Those who trust in him will understand truth, and the faithful will abide with him in love, because grace and mercy are upon his elect, and he watches over his holy ones. ~Wisdom of Solomon 3:9 Here s the ironic thing about people who are generous. Those who give freely and cheerfully don t do it to be rewarded. They do it to show their love for God and their neighbors. Yet, because of their generosity, they typically are given more than they give away! From the weekend of October 26, 2014 Weekly Giving Goal $15, Actual Weekly Giving $11, Fiscal Year to Date (From ) Weekly Giving Goal $255, Actual Weekly Giving $227, Goal to Date for Year +/(-) $ (27,654.00) We are always very grateful for the sacrifices you make to support the mission, goals, and ministry of St. Luke Church. Thank you for your generosity!

Whalen Today, November 2, is All Souls Day, a special time to remember our departed loved ones in prayer. All of our Masses will be offered for All Souls. Tomorrow, Monday, November 3, at 7:30 pm there will be a special Mass to remember parishioners who have died during the past 12 months. The families and friends of these recently deceased parishioners are specially invited to join in this Memorial Mass. Everyone is cordially invited to attend. Not only on All Souls Day but throughout the month of November, we offer our prayers for all the faithful departed, that they may be quickly brought into the fullness of eternal life with God in heaven. You are invited to write the names of relatives and friends who have died since last November in our Book of the Deceased, which is located near the pulpit. May this book be a visual reminder to keep all our departed loved ones in our prayers. Lord Jesus, you welcome into your kingdom all those who do your Father s will, and say to them, Come to me, all you who labor and are overburdened, and I will give you rest. We pray for our loved ones, family and friends, who have gone before us marked with the sign of faith. (Pause here to mention those whom you wish to remember.) Into your hands, O Lord, we humbly entrust them. In this life you embraced them with your tender love; deliver them now from every evil and bid them enter eternal rest. Father, welcome them into paradise where there will be no sorrow, no weeping nor pain, but the fullness of peace and joy with your Son and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen. NOVEMBER 2, 2014 Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed 3

4 It was fabulous fun all around for families at the St. Luke Religious Education Program s Fall Family Fest in Waldron Hall last Sunday. Lots of volunteers pitched in to help make this event happen. The children especially enjoyed the games, and dozens of families walked away with big smiles and great raffle prizes. The biggest winner of all, of course, was the Religious Education Program, which will reap the benefits from this fund-raiser all year long. We need some individuals with a strong background in science to serve as judges for our 7th Grade Science Fair, which will be held on Thursday, November 20, from 3:15-7:30 pm in Waldron Hall. The time commitment for this event is about an hour and a half. If interested, please Janet Crosswhite at jcrosswhite@stlukeparish.org. 4 WELCOME TO ST. LUKE River Forest, IL The staff and students of St. Luke Parish School invite all parishioners who are veterans, widows and widowers of veterans, and those currently serving in the military to attend a special prayer service on Tuesday, November 11. This prayer service will honor all those in our school and parish families who have valiantly served and sacrificed so much for our country. Please join us in the church at 2:00 pm.

5 November 23 7:15 am to 1:15 pm The Sunday before Thanksgiving, November 23, is the day for the annual Turkey Sunday food drive for Thanksgiving meals for 230 families. The families have been identified by the ministries working on the campus of the former Blessed Sacrament Parish The Learning Center, the Blessed Sacrament Food Pantry, the Blessed Sacrament Senior Citizens group, St. Agatha Parish, and the Blessed Sacrament Youth Center. The area served by these ministries is one of the most economically disadvantaged areas of Chicago. Some of the families are small, especially the seniors; some are large, with parents, children and extended family members all living together. As many of you know, our long time power shopper Marcee Gavula was called home to the Lord last Thanksgiving. While we miss her greatly and it is impossible to replace her, Turkey Sunday must go on, so please remember her work when you consider giving to this year s food drive. In order to have enough food for all the families, we will buy at least the following amounts of food: 170 turkeys 1,000 lbs. of potatoes 1,200 lbs. of sweet potatoes 750 cans of corn and beans 230 cans of cranberries 720 lbs. of onions 460 lbs. of carrots 230 bags of stuffing 230 boxes of corn bread mix. We estimate we will be spending $30 per family to buy this food. Checks can be made out to St. Luke Parish with Turkey Sunday on the memo line. On Turkey Sunday we need 60 families to donate a 20-plus pound frozen turkey, so we will have a total of 230 frozen turkeys. We also need people to donate other canned and non-perishable food. Please no fresh turkeys or frozen pies! Thank you in advance for your tremendous generosity. ~The St. Luke Feed the Hungry Committee DATE: Sunday morning, November 9 TIME: 10:30 am - Come early; meet and sit with your St. Agatha/Blessed Sacrament friends during Mass. PLACE: PROGRAM: BRING: St. Agatha Church at Kedzie and Douglas Blvd. We will begin with the regularly scheduled Mass (10:30 am), followed by a Continental Breakfast, Tuition Awards, and Social Hour. Nothing! Doughnuts, coffee, and juice will be provided. QUESTIONS: Bob & Mary Kay Nickels, or Dave & Annemarie Valenti, St. Luke families have once again spread the warmth to our friends at The Learning Center at Blessed Sacrament. A big THANK YOU comes from Sr. Monice Kavanaugh, OP, Executive Director, and everyone at The Learning Center. Know that there are many thankful coat recipients who will think warmly of St. Lukers throughout the coming winter! To defend and promote life, to show reverence and love for it, is a task which God entrusts to every man.... ~ Pope John Paul II, Evangelium vitae, 42 NOVEMBER 2, 2014 Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed 5

6 We are in need of substitute catechists for our elementary students on Wednesday afternoons from 3:40-4:30 pm or Wednesday evenings from 6:30-7:30 pm. Please contact the Religious Education Office at On Monday, October 20, Mrs. Bridget Sperduto, Executive Director at The Well, returned to St. Luke Parish and engaged the 8 th grade Confirmation candidates in discovering the many ways they might commit to being the face of God s love and light in the world. What do we value? she asked. How can we make a difference in our world? She offered our students the following advice: Give everyone a chance. Ask someone to join you and your friends. Be a leader. Don t always do what the crowd does, but do what s right. Commit to being a good example everywhere you go. at The Well: THOMAS BERRY: Thomas the Teacher Thomas the Man Saturday, November 8, 8:30 am-noon Facilitator: Carolyn Toben In celebration of the 100 th anniversary of renowned priest, author and cultural historian Thomas Berry s birth and his life s work, we will gather with Carolyn Toben, who spent many hours over the course of ten years with Thomas. She engaged him in deep discussions about his foundational thinking on the human-earth-divine relationship. Her book, Recovering a Sense of the Sacred Conversations with Thomas Berry, is based on her personal notes, practices and reflections from these conversations. During this special program, we will share excerpts from Thomas Berry s wisdom of the heart and reminiscences from someone who knew him well. Cost: $35. For more information, visit The Well s website at csjthewell.org or call The Well Spirituality Center is located at 1515 West Ogden Avenue in LaGrange Park.
