1 528 Lathrop Avenue River Forest, Illinois The kingdom of God is like a mustard seed that, when it is sown in the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on the earth. But once it is sown, it springs up and becomes the largest of plants... so that the birds of the sky can dwell in its shade. ~Mark 4:30-32 June 17, 2018 Ele ve nt h S unday in Ord inar y Time

WELCOME TO ST. LUKE River Forest, IL FROM THE PASTOR ABBA-hood Rest assured this article is not about the pop rock group from the 70s or their tunes This may certainly sound like but is not a last name for someone of Arabic descent I ask you to think instead on this Father s Day of the word Jesus would have used for Father. Abba was more of a word similar to our daddy. It was an endearing term, signifying a most tender and loving relationship of father to child and of child with father. It was the approach Jesus used in addressing His loving Father in heaven in the Lord s Prayer and in his relationship with his earthly father, St. Joseph. Jesus call to prayer and his example should inspire us to take some time today to ponder and reflect on what our fathers mean to us today or if they have passed on, what they meant to us and how we remember them as we pray for them. However, if you are a father, more importantly, see how this Abba-hood directly applies to you. It s important to consider that the ideal of perfect fatherhood is modeled in God the Father, in the Lord and Creator of all, and in the family of the Trinity. It is expressed in a variety of ways. We consider a few of them herein. Revering Life and Participating in its Creation As husbands with their wives cooperate with God s plan for creation, new life is brought into the world to be cherished, nurtured, and respected. Abbas do this Modeling the Virtues Each day is lived as one who believes, one who is searching for answers, and one who fosters growth in discipleship as he himself acquires the virtues: faith, hope, and love... and the greatest of these is love! Worshipping and Participating in the Church s Prayer and Life Life is a great balancing act, and Abbas realize they cannot hold it all together without God s help; they need a relationship with God that is forged in prayer and nourished by Mass and the Eucharist and the graces of the other sacraments. Any father who engages a touch of all of these and who, in humility, embraces the rest of them how can he not be an Abba? God s Blessings to ALL Dads this Day! ~Fr. Szmyd
3 Our first Coffee on the Plaza got off to a slightly wet start with the unseasonably rainy month of June, but that didn t dampen the spirit of those who stopped by for coffee, juice, bagels, and donut holes. Watch for more dates of this summer social and be sure to join us on the front steps of the church after the 9:00 and 11:00 Masses. See all of the photos on our parish Facebook page at JUNE 17, 2018 Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time 3
4 The best father is one who loves without cost to his children and tries to raise them to be fully human creatures with the abilities to make a difference in our world. Some fathers are successful, some are not. However, almost all try their best. This Father s Day, let your dad know that you appreciate all his efforts, especially in these areas: Faith Thanks, Dad, for having faith in me, when I was not sure I had faith in myself. Love Thanks for loving me even when I did not love myself. Strength Your strength in helping me to see and choose right from wrong was a great gift. Honor You taught me that to honor myself was a way to honor the God who made me. For all these things and more, I am forever grateful. In the bulletin four weeks ago we announced that one of our 8th graders won top honors at the Illinois State History Fair and was advancing to national competition at the University of Maryland this past Thursday. Full results were not available at press time, but St. Luke Parish is certainly very proud of Patrick Hicks for his amazing achievement. Upon arriving on campus, he posed for the photo below with his parents, teacher James Bratager, and a bronze terrapin, the University of Maryland s mascot. Stay tuned for the full story! The Men s Discussion Group will have its next monthly meeting on Saturday, June 23, from 10:00 to 11:00 am in Waldron Hall. All men in the parish are invited to drop in and share what s going on in your life, work, and faith. The Catholic Charities is debuting a new time and new location for its 18th Annual Brighter Futures Golf Outing this month. This year s event will be held on Monday, June 25, at the Butterfield Country Club in Oak Brook. The day begins with access to practice facilities at 10:30 am, followed by lunch, a shotgun start at 1:00 pm, and a cocktail hour and dinner. The benefit supports Catholic Charities homeless services in the West Region. The New Hope Housing Program provides a full range of services to help local families transition from homelessness to self-sufficiency through intensive case management, counseling, job development, temporary rent assistance and personal financial education, and networking with schools to help the children continue their education. More than 85% of families stay employed, in school, and in stable housing. Participants can choose the full day, or an afternoon of cards, or or just cocktails and dinner. 5 The early years are often a time of questioning faith and values. Why not give your child a boost in this area in a fun and non-judgmental environment where they can ask questions, share experiences, and make new friends? We still have openings in our week-long Totus Tuus Summer Camp for students entering grade school through high school this fall. Hosted at St. Luke the week of July 22-27, the camp for children in grades 1-6 will be 9:00 am to 2:30 pm Monday-Friday, while junior high/high school students will meet 7:00 to 9:00 pm Sunday-Thursday. For the complete program information and the camp registration form, go online to tinyurl.com/stluketotus2018 and sign up today! St. Lukers are invited to help our sharing parish of St. Agatha commemorate its 125th anniversary at two major events this month. Cardinal Blase Cupich will celebrate the 125th Anniversary Mass at the church, 3151 W. Douglas Boulevard in Chicago, next Sunday at 10:30 am. Then the parish will continue the celebration with a banquet at St. Ignatius College Prep, 1076 West Roosevelt Road, on Saturday, June 30.
