3 The St. Luke Peace and Justice Committee invites everyone to a reception for Jeannine Hill Fletcher, the author of the selection for this year s Summer Book Discussion, The Sin of White Supremacy. The daughter of St. Luke parishioners Jim and Virginia Hill, Prof. Hill Fletcher graduated from the University of Illinois as an English major. After a year with the Jesuit Volunteer Corps, she attended Harvard Divinity School and earned her master s degree in Theological Studies in 1996 and Doctorate in Theology in Since then she has taught at Fordham University about the intersection of Systematic Theology and issues of diversity (religious diversity, Christian cultural diversity, race, and gender). Prof. Hill Fletcher is the author of two books on women s issues as well as her newest book on the impact of racism in American churches. She is a board member of the Northwest Bronx Community and Clergy Coalition, a multi-religious and multi-racial grassroots organization working for social change. The reception will be this Thursday, July 19, from 7:30 to 9:00 pm in the Hospitality House. Anyone who is interested in the topic of her book is welcome to attend. The Book Discussion Group will meet for its last two sessions at 7:30 pm on July 23 and August 6 in Waldron Hall. St. Luke Parish is seeking enthusiastic, spirit-filled Catholics to share their faith with the children of our parish this coming year in our Religious Education Program. We provide the training you supply your enthusiasm and love for the Lord and the promise to journey in faith with these young people! It s not necessary to be a parent or to have a child in the program to be part of this special ministry. Training will be provided in August leading up to the start of the program. Classes meet in the St. Luke School building on Wednesday afternoons (3:30-4:30 pm) for the early grades and on Wednesday evenings (6:30-7:30 pm) for middle-school grades. Not sure you d like to take this on alone? Then why not take a team approach and ask a friend or your spouse if they would like to teach with you. High school and college-age If you d like to learn more about this ministry, please contact Mary Beth Smedinghoff, at the Religious Education Office, students are also welcome to help. It s a fulfilling and joyful ministry. Our catechists all say they are happy to give of themselves but they receive far more blessings in return for their efforts. They learn more about themselves as people of faith, and they enjoy having the chance to work with some great fellow parishioners while planning each week s lessons. Consider joining us! 4 St. Luke s Summer Youth Service Group reached Kansas City, Kansas, safely last Sunday after a 550-mile trek in two vans. They spent this past week with the Catholic Heart WorkCamp doing light home repairs and yard work for the elderly and low-income families around the Greater Kansas City vicinity, as well as having fun, music, prayer, and meeting other youths in their spare time. It s that time again, so please enter your CAN T SERVE and PREFERENCE dates for the next period of our liturgical schedule September 10 through November 30 on the Ministry Scheduler Pro website. The last date for you to enter this information is Sunday, July 29. Ministry Scheduler Pro will not allow any entries after July 29. Remember: If you miss the July 29 deadline to enter your dates, you will need to find your own substitutes for the dates you are assigned. We will start accepting requests for 2019 Mass intentions beginning on Monday, July 23. 5 Today (Sunday) is the last day to make a reservation for the Prime Timers trip to the Botanical Gardens tomorrow. It is a great experience to ride the tram through the park. The tram ride is $7, and a $25 parking fee will be divided among participants plus lunch at the Garden Cafe. The group will leave from the Ashland Avenue entrance of the Hospitality House at 9:30 am due to the re-sealing of the parking lot. Catholic Charities is seeking donations of backpacks and school supplies that can be handed out at the annual free Community Health Fair at St. Frances of Rome Church on August 18. Communion Visits and Ministry of Care A parish priest or Minister of Care will be happy to visit those who are sick or homebound. Please call the rectory to make arrangements. Baptism Baptisms take place on the first and third Sundays of each month, except during Lent. Preparation meetings are held on the first Monday of every month for the parents of children who will be baptized. Arrangements can be made by calling the rectory. Marriage Couples wishing to be married should call the rectory to set up an appointment with one of the parish priests at least six months in advance of the desired wedding date. Anointing of the Sick Elderly parishioners, those in poor health or who are anticipating surgery can call the rectory to arrange to receive the sacrament of anointing.
