4 WELCOME TO THE ST. PATRICK CATHOLIC CHURCH In the name of our gracious and generous God, I welcome you to the Faith Community of St. Patrick. I pray this handbook will help you to better understand the ministries and activities of the people of our church community. May we continue to build on the faith tradition of the past. Our mission is to encourage involvement of all parishioners in the life and mission of Jesus Christ by fostering spiritual growth and faith formation. Our coordinated ministries are designed to give strong Christian witness as we live the Gospel in the modern world and reach out to those in need in our community and beyond. Saint Patrick s Church was established in 1868 on O Road in what is now Laurie, Missouri. Circuit-riding priests came to offer Mass on a more or less regular basis until the 1940 s. As the area grew into a place for retirement and resort recreation, the need for a new worship facility became evident. In 1952 the church in Gravois Mills was built on Highway 5 and in 1962 an addition was completed to accommodate the summer influx of visitors. By the mid 1970 s it was apparent that even the enlarged church in Gravois Mills could not contain the many who wished to attend Mass in this area. Responding to the need for an even larger prayer center, the new church, the Shrine of St. Patrick was dedicated in 1980 in Laurie. 4 4

19 The National Shrine of Mary, Mother of the Church Mission Statement The Mary, Mother of the Church Shrine is dedicated to Mary as mother of the church and to all mothers. The most important person on earth is a mother. The purpose of the Shrine is to help promote a true appreciation of motherhood, the preciousness of life and the integrity of the family. The outdoor shrine dedicated to Mary, Mother of the Church provides a beautiful setting for outdoor Masses for the summer crowd. The purpose of the Shrine is to show high regard for all mothers of the world. All who come to the shrine are invited to honor their mothers in a special way by having their Mothers names engraved on the Mothers Wall of Life, the polished black granite that surrounds the sculpture of Mary. The Masses and prayers offered at the Shrine are offered for all Mothers whose names are on the Wall. Outdoor Masses are offered at the Shrine every weekend during the summer on Saturday at 8:00 p.m. and at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday. Walk the last hours of Christ s life following the footsteps along the Stations of the Cross. Enjoy the Avenue of the Flags. Over 100 flags were originally given by visitors to the Shrine from other countries or by parishioners in remembrance of their heritage. Today, the flags can be adopted. Take in the beauty of the fountains, flowers and the monuments throughout the grounds while enjoying the beautiful music of the carillon bells. Tours are available; guests are greeted with soft drinks and coffee
20 The MISSION of the KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS is embodied by our four core PRINCIPLES: Charity - Our Catholic faith teaches us to Love thy neighbor as thyself. Members of the Knights of Columbus show love for their neighbors by conducting food drives and donating the food to local soup kitchens and food pantries, by volunteering at Special Olympics, and by supporting, both spiritually and materially, mothers who choose life for their babies. Knights recognize that our mission, and our faith in God, compels us to action. There is no better way to experience love and compassion than by helping those in need, a call we answer every day. Unity None of us is as good as all of us. Members of the Knights of Columbus all know that together we can accomplish far more than any of us could individually. So we stick together we support one another. That doesn t mean that we always agree or that there is never a difference of opinion. It does mean that as a Knight of Columbus you can count on the support and encouragement of your brother Knights as you work to make life better in your parish and community. Fraternity The Venerable Michael J. McGivney founded the Knights of Columbus, in large part, to provide assistance to the widows and children left behind when the family breadwinner died often prematurely. The Order s top-rated insurance program continues to do this today, as do individual Knights, who last year gave more than 10 million hours of their time to assist sick and/or disabled members and their families. In the Knights of Columbus, we watch out for and take care of one another. Patriotism Members of the Knights of Columbus, be they Americans, Canadians, Mexicans, Cubans, Filipinos, Poles, or Dominicans, are patriotic citizens. We are proud of our devotion to God and country, and believe in standing up for both. Whether it s in public or private, the Knights remind the world that Catholics support their nations and are amongst the greatest citizens. Why join the Knights of Columbus? Imagine being part of an organization that fills your heart and your mind with the joy of giving to others and the feeling that comes with making a difference. Knights are Catholic men, 18 years of age and older, who are committed to making their community a better place, while supporting their Church. Being a Knight is more than camaraderie, it is being involved with your community: it is supporting your local Catholic Church, while enhancing your own faith; it is about protecting and enhancing your family life
21 The MISSION of the LADIES AUXILIARY is the same as the KNIGHTS. Our objectives are to work with and provide services to our Community, Council, Auxiliary, and Parish Family. Community Members volunteer to help at the Nursing home, Community for Christ and Senior Center. Council Assist in promoting the welfare of the Local and the Missouri State Council of the Knights of Columbus Auxiliary Hosts K of C Auxiliary meetings. Bake for the Fish Fries. Have fun. Church Singing in the choir. Helping with Parish Guild functions. Helping with Vacation Bible School. These are just a few of the commitments of the Ladies Auxiliary. Membership in the Auxiliary may be wives, widows, mothers and daughters (18 and older) of Knights in good standing. We invite and welcome all of the above mentioned ladies to join us. Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month at the same time as the Knights meeting. 21
