HEAT TO HEAT pastor to parish Sacred Heart: 121 Years Strong! This weekend at all the Sunday Masses we celebrate the solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, our patronal feast.

2 HEAT TO HEAT pastor to parish Sacred Heart: 121 Years Strong! This weekend at all the Sunday Masses we celebrate the solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, our patronal feast. Normally, that solemnity is celebrated on the Friday after the second Sunday after Pentecost, this year June 8. But because our parish is named after the Sacred Heart we have the option of transferring the solemnity from June 8 to the nearest weekend, as long as that weekend is a Sunday in Ordinary Time (which is the case this year). This will be the final Sacred Heart patronal feast day given that the name of our new parish becomes Divine Mercy as of July 1. The divine mercy of God is celebrated specifically on the Second Sunday of the Easter Season (one week after Easter Sunday) ever since Saint Pope John Paul II designated that particular Sunday as Divine Mercy Sunday. From July 1 forward we won t have to do any transferring of a patronal solemnity from a weekday to a nearby Sunday; the liturgical calendar takes care of that issue quite conveniently. From the Old comes the New The new parish originates out of a strong tradition and enjoys a solid foundation. This faith community has served the area for 121 years. Church buildings have come and gone (three, so far), but the community has grown and flourished. As a parish we will soon combine with St. Philip the Apostle church and campus. Although that particular faith community has not been around as long as Sacred Heart, it comes with its own traditions and ministries. We will have the joy and the excitement of blending the two communities as much as possible to form one new faith community focused on the compassion and mercy of God as it radiates out to the whole world from the wounded heart of Jesus, crucified and isen. The Heart of God For this reason, the joint parish councils have already decided to retain the heart logo in existence it fits well with the notion of God s loving mercy, since that love is best imaged by the heart of Jesus, pierced for our sakes and for the sake the entire world. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches, [Christ] has loved us all with a human heart. For this reason, the Sacred Heart of Jesus, pierced by our sins and for our salvation, is quite rightly considered the chief sign and symbol of that... love with which the divine edeemer continually loves the eternal Father and all human beings without exception [CCC, 478 quoting Pope Pius XII]. Out of the Savior s heart flowed blood and water at his crucifixion. We believe this becomes the eternal wellspring of the sacraments and all the graces imparted through the mission of the Church in the world. May our new parish blended community live up to the many graces bestowed through the loving, gracious and merciful heart of the Savior. 4 Hearts Alive in Worship: Liturgy and Prayer My only desire is to unite myself to God (St. Paul of the Cross) TODAY IS OU PATONAL FEAST DAY! The Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus is celebrated on the Friday after the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. Given that we are Sacred Heart Parish, we may move this Solemnity to Sunday in recognition of our patronal feast day. The devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus has a life outside of the liturgy as well: the nine Fridays and the twelve promises made by Jesus to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque are still familiar to many Catholics. (Jesus and St. Margaret Mary Alacoque appear in the stained glass window in our choir loft.) One of the most beloved aspects of our Catholic tradition is our devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. In honoring the Sacred Heart, we are honoring the compassion and love of Christ: his human heart, moved with pity for his flock, his divine heart, pierced for the sins of his people. From the heart of Christ, pierced by the soldier s lance, blood and water poured out, the wellspring of the Church s Sacraments. While saints and mystics, notably the thirteenth century Benedictine St. Gerturde, have long found the heart of Christ a rich subject matter for meditation, it was not until the seventeenth century, in France, that devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus began to take the form we know today. It was a time when the heresy of Jansenism was rampant. People were convinced that human sinfulness was too great to be forgiven, that salvation would only be granted to a few. In this climate of fear, the revelations of the Sacred Heart to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, a religious of the Visitation order, in the French town of Paray-le- Monial, France, must have come as a complete and wonderful surprise. The devotion spread, and the feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was added to the universal calendar in There are many devotions associated with the Sacred Heart of Jesus, especially the Litany of the Sacred Heart, and the devotion of the nine first Fridays, in which people attend Mass on the first Friday of each month, celebrating the Sacraments of econciliation and Eucharist, in keeping with the words of Christ to St. Margaret Mary, when he promised grace, peace, and consolation to those who would honor him in this way. On the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, we give thanks to God for the infinite love of Christ, represented by the image of his heart on fire with love. Through our prayer, we also seek to make reparation for the ways that love has been rejected by human beings. This is why in the familiar image, Christ s heart is pierced and surrounded with thorns. COLLECT Let us pray. Grant, we pray, almighty God, that we, who glory in the Heart of your beloved Son and recall the wonders of his love for us, may be made worthy to receive an overflowing measure of grace from that fount of heavenly gifts. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. She is one of the leading scholars in feminist interpretation of the Scriptures, and an accomplished author and international lecturer.
