Divine Mercy parish December 9, 2018 SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT Justice shall flourish in this time, and fullness of peace for ever.

FROM THE PASTOR S PEN COMING SOON: STATE OF THE PARISH REPORT Perhaps you ve been wondering why you haven t yet seen the State of the Parish Report. We usually issue it towards the end of October or in the beginning of Advent. It has not been issued yet because, as you can guess, we ve been working on a few other things since July 1 when St Philip and Sacred Heart combined to form the new parish of Divine Mercy. We have not been working alone on merging the operational aspects of the parish. There is an entire team from the Archdiocese providing us with support. One aspect of that support is developing a new (combined) budget based on the former budgets. That is being accomplished using QuickBooks. I m sure many of you are familiar with this software. In addition to putting together a new budget for the new parish reality, both campuses are persuing capital improvements as part of the capital campaigns that were run by the former parishes. Those improvements have been vetted by our Finance Council. However, it takes an amazing amount of paperwork and phone work with the Archdiocese to release the funds which are ours for these projects. That s what our business office has been focused on for that last little while. GOOD THINGS ARE WORTH WAITING FOR All of this is to explain why the State of the Parish Report is delayed. The same Archdiocesan folks who are helping us develop and fine-tune the new budget are also responsible through QuickBooks for releasing the reporting of last year s figures. And don t forget: as a parish we may still be working on operational aspects of the combining, we are also forging ahead into phase five of Renew My Church, which is all about renewal and growth. We ve put into place the Senior Leadership Team, which has met three times now. Along with the SLT, we ve also been taking time out to be coached by the Divine Renovation Network as we look forward to beefing up our ministry efforts around evangelization, implementing Alpha, and growing the parish. SOMETIMEES SIMPLE IS GOOD Given what we are focusing on these days with the operational aspects of the combining, you will more than likely see a very simple version of the State of the Parish report. It will probably be mostly finances with a bit of reporting on new and notable ministry efforts. It ll also be a bit of a misnomer, since it won t really be a state of the parish but a state of the parishes since we will be reporting the final fiscal year of the two former parishes which have subsequently been merged. YOU ARE A BLESSING Thanks for your patience. Thanks, too, for your continued donations toward the two capital campaigns. We re making great progress. You just don t see it all. Sure, you can see the beautiful condition of the stained glass windows at Sacred Heart. And you can see how nice the gym looks at St Philip. But to see the really vital progress, you d have to go down into the sewers at St Philip. That s not something I would recommend. When something like that isn t working, you know about it. When it is working (now), you take it for granted. I personally don t take any of this for granted. I am deeply appreciative of your commitment and dedication to this wonderful new parish and all of our parishioners who are working so hard to move us forward into God s future. Happy Advent! Christmas Nativity Pageant Please Join Us to celebrate Our joyful tradition Sunday, December 16, 9:40 am Sacred Heart Gymnasium presented by 3 rd Grade Children from Sacred Heart Religious Education directed by parishioners Barb Anderson and ed kuffert Begins with caroling led by our 4 th and 5 th grade children

PRAYER AND WORSHIP HOLY HOUR AT ST. PHILIP CHURCH Join Divine Mercy parishioners for Holy Hour every Friday afternoon at 3:00p.m. at St. Philip Church. RESPECT LIFE PRAYER That the sick and the lonely may enjoy the consolation of the presence and love of family, friends, and the wider Christian community, we pray to the Lord. WEEKLY SCRIPTURE REFLECTION GROUP A scripture reflection group meets every Monday morning. We ll meet at the Sacred Heart offices after the 8:30am Mass. We gather for one hour to read and reflect on the coming Sunday readings. No experience in scripture necessary, and everyone walks away learning something new! All are welcome it will make your Sunday experience even more worthwhile! ADVENT REFLECTION BOOKLETS Copies of "Waiting in Joyful Hope," a booklet of daily reflections for Advent and Christmas, are available at all entrances to the church. Please take one home to help enrich your journey through this season of preparation. NEW LECTOR WORKBOOKS AVAILABLE If you are a lector for either Sacred Heart or St. Philip, please pick up your new Lector Workbook for the coming Liturgical Year. Sacred Heart lectors can find them in the Sacristy. St. Philip the Apostle lectors can find them in the lobby of the Church. If you are interested in becoming a lector for either worship site, please contact the parish office. EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP: A LOOK AT THE SCRIPTURES And this is my prayer: that your love may increase ever more and more in knowledge and every kind of perception, to discern what is of value (Philippians 1:9-10) Glittery holiday ads can blind us to our stewardship values and distort our needs and wants. It is important that during this season of endless buying we remember that each of us also has the need to give back to God and to those that are in need. PAPAL TWEETS Advent is the time to welcome the Lord who comes to meet us, the time to look ahead, and to prepare ourselves for Christ s return. CHILDREN S LITURGY AT SACRED HEART CHURCH What is it? Children s Liturgy is actually the Liturgy of the Word for children. The Sunday scripture readings are proclaimed and explained on a level the children can understand and enjoy. Children s Liturgy takes place at our 10:30 am Sunday Mass from September through May (see schedule below). Any child in prekindergarten through 3 rd grade is encouraged to join us. Parents are also welcome especially if your child is a little nervous with new experiences. No registration is necessary. What exactly do they do? Right after the opening prayer, the celebrant will invite the children to come forward for a blessing and the adult leader will lead them to the fireplace room in the parish office. After a brief welcome, they listen to the First Reading proclaimed from the Children s Lectionary. Next, the Gospel is proclaimed by one of the adult leaders. An age-appropriate reflection on the Word is shared by the leader through stories, discussions, or pictures - whatever the leader finds most appropriate to conveying the meaning of the scriptures. The children are then invited to share their own thoughts and ideas. The children return to the church after the Prayers of the Faithful to celebrate the Liturgy of the Eucharist with the entire community. Please encourage your child/ren to participate & enjoy the Liturgy of the Word at their level of understanding. Upcoming dates: December 2, 9, 16; January 6, 13, 20, 27. Questions? Contact Patty Sanfilippo at psanfilippo1380@gmail.com or call the Religious Education Office at

The theme this week was hope and the children learned that we have hope because God is faithful and keeps the promises He makes to us. Our greatest source of hope is the birth of Jesus at Christmas! The early childhood students sang songs and listened to the Christmas story, Room for a Little One. Their little voices were a precious reminder of the meaning of this holy season! What a great day for snow painting! Our preschoolers got right to it and had fun in the snow! Our kindergartners are getting ready for the true meaning of Christmas.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Sacred Heart Campus Sharing Our Gifts Last Sunday the fifth grade class launched their class service project focusing on supporting members of the military and their families through the USO. Chris Miller, Air Force veteran and now Director, Center Operations and Volunteer Services, USO of IL, visited with our 5 th, 6 th and 7 th grade students and gave an informative and moving presentation about his own military service and the needs of military personnel and families in general. Saint Philip Campus Children from St. Philip s PREP are happy to invite you for our Christmas Pageant on December 16 th at 10:45 Please join us to celebrate together Jesus Birthday Following his presentation and lively discussion, the 5 th grade class returned to their classroom and made cards of gratitude and support for service men and women and their families. In addition to providing this emotional support, the classes raised $600 to help military families during this Christmas season. Thanks to all who shared in this effort! How could it be, Son of God in my arms Father, show me how to fit into this plan of yours?

OUTREACH THE ST. PHILIP GIVING TREE The St. Philip Giving Tree contains gift tags marked with suggestions for Catholic Charities Toy Shower and for St. Benedict the African s Christmas gift cards. Catholic Charities annual Celebration of Giving is a concerted effort to collect holiday gifts for children and families served by Catholic Charities wide array of programs. This year we ve been asked to concentrate on gifts for babies (newborn to 3 yrs) and teens (12-17 yrs). The Christmas gift card collection is a vital aspect of our outreach to the St. Benedict the African community. St. Benedict is the sharing parish of St. Philip. The gift cards help the parish provide food and gas as need arises throughout the year. Whole Foods, Jewel, McDonalds, Target, Walgreens and gas cards are all good options. Cash donations are always welcome as well. Gift cards for both Catholic Charities and St. Benedict the African can be found on the Giving Tree in the Church Vestibule. SACRED HEART CHRISTMAS SHARING: VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Judy Pyke is looking for volunteers (adults, 8th grade on up!) to help parishioners carry boxes into the Gathering Space when they drop off their Christmas Sharing donations at Sacred Heart Church. When? Friday, December 14th from 4-7pm or Saturday morning, December 15th from 9am Noon. We also need help to load all the boxes onto the moving truck after the 10:30am Mass on Sunday, December 16th. If you can help, please contact the main parish office for Divine Mercy. THANK YOU! DONATIONS NEEDED We re still accepting donations for Jewel Foods Gift Cards, as total donations are down from the last several years. Please consider helping a St. Columbanus family or friend put food on their table for Christmas. You can make your check payable to Divine Mercy Parish in increments of $25, so that we may purchase the cards in bulk for needy families of St. Columbanus for Christmas. THANK YOU! SECOND GRADERS RECEIVE FIRST RECONCILIATION: On Tuesday, November 27 th, forty five children from Divine Mercy Religious Education and Sacred Heart School celebrated the Sacrament of First Reconciliation at Sacred Heart Church. Father Michael Solazzo presided over the beautiful ceremony which highlighted God s love for us, His mercy for us and His light that we each carry within us. Each child lit their own reconciliation candle and placed it on a special altar which provided the perfect shining backdrop for the closing hymn, This Little Light of Mine. MARYHAVEN DONATIONS In this season of gratitude, giving, and family, please think of Friends of Maryhaven. We welcome gifts that beautify the home, gifts that assist residents in their daily lives, and gifts that make new and exciting activities possible. Please visit our website at - and please contact us if you would like a copy of the Maryhaven residents wish-list. The folks who live at Maryhaven have the blessing of many years, and the blessing of being part of the North Shore Catholic community.
