1 Sacred Heart Church Winnetka - Glencoe THE TOWER Sunday, November 27, 2011 First Sunday of Advent THE ADVENT WREATH The idea for the Advent wreath began in the far northern countries of Scandinavia long before Jesus was born. During the dark, cold winter days the pagan people of these lands would long for the sun, the light of the world, to shine on them again. So they would take a great wheel (often a wagon wheel) and put many candles around the rim. When the candles were lighted, they would twirl the wheel. How beautiful it must have looked! This wheel was like a glowing prayer to the god of light: Please turn the world around so we may face your sun again! Today as Christians we still long for the light and the Advent wreath is a visual reminder that Jesus is the light who will help us to see better ways of loving God WELCOME and each other. He will warm us with his love and help us to grow. He will fill us with joy. The candles on our Advent wreath are like our prayer to God. Please open our eyes. Turn us toward you. Help us to welcome your son, the Light of the World. THE MEANING OF THE WREATH The word ADVENT means the coming or promise. The Wreath The circular form symbolizes that God has no beginning and no end. The Boughs The evergreens from which they come remain always fresh and green, even during the darkest days of winter and remind us that Jesus love lives in us every day and will never end. The Candles The four candles represent the four weeks of Advent. The lighted candles represent Christ, the Light of the World. Each week we light one more candle that represents the idea that the coming of Christ is closer. HOW TO USE THE WREATH The Advent wreath has a long tradition as a household observance. It begins with the blessing of the wreath at the evening meal on the Saturday before the First Sunday of Advent. Place the wreath in a significant place in the home such as the dining room table. You may want to add evergreens and ribbons to the base of the wreath. Each evening, maybe at dinner time, light the appropriate candles and recite the prayer for the week. The first week, one purple candle is lit, the second week, two purple candles are lit, the third week, the pink candle is added, and the fourth week all are lit. If dinnertime is not the best time for your household choose whatever time works. Whether you live alone, or if there are many people in our home, it does not matter. The most important tradition is to have the wreath and to pray with it. PRAYER FOR THE FIRST WEEK OF ADVENT Loving God, as we come before you this Advent, help us to light a place for your Son, Jesus, in our home and in our hearts. Help us to welcome Him by being kind to one another and reaching out to those in need. Amen.

2 HAPPY LITURGICAL NEW YEAR, EVERYONE! Yes, it is that time again! The new Liturgical Year begins - Advent begins and autumn begins to turn into winter. This particular turning brings something new to us as well: the Revised Roman Missal. We have been singing the new parts for weeks now, but today is the test of how the new words work for the priest and the congregation. All that aside, Advent is my favorite liturgical season. It gets dark and cold outside but everyone inside is lighting candles, singing songs, buying presents and decorating. Advent is a time of preparing for Christmas. For all of us, this includes frantic shopping trips, baking, falling off of ladders hanging lights, and manic gift wrapping at 2 a.m. While all those things help make our experience of Christmas, they are not all we can be doing. We are, after all, preparing for a child to be born Jesus Christ, our Savior. This time makes me think of my mom who puts just as much work into getting the house ready for Advent as for Christmas. She decorates the house, putting out her vast collection of Nativity scenes while hiding all the baby Jesus s away, hanging the yarn-and-felt Jesse tree, and picking out her cookie recipes for the season. My mom puts special care into the Advent wreath, taking clippings of holly and evergreen into the house and wiring them to the wood circle and candleholders made by my dad. One tradition I remember fondly is of two items she placed on the mantel: a white porcelain statue of Mary and an empty wooden manger. As a small child, it was my job to do good deeds during the Advent season. Every time I did a good deed, I got to put a piece of straw in the empty manger. My goal was to make the manger comfy for baby Jesus by Christmas, here represented by a plastic baby that in no way matched the white porcelain Mary. In her own way, my mother was teaching me to prepare for Christ s birth. It is a long tradition; Mary prepared by going to visit her cousin who was also pregnant. Elizabeth needed Mary s help and Mary needed to know how to get ready for a baby. Today s readings are about waiting for Christ s return. Just like Mary waited and prepared for Jesus, just like we wait and prepare for Christmas, we wait and prepare for Christ to come back. We are supposed to be ready at any time so how do we prepare? ~ Carol Nowatzke Youth Minister

5 Fiscal 2011 Highlights ANNUAL FINANCIAL REPORT TO PARISHIONERS FISCAL YEAR ENDED 6/30/11 Facilities: Prioritized our growing list of deferred maintenance projects (via the Buildings and Grounds Committee) and set the stage for a major analysis of our facilities usage and needs. Created an Ad Hoc Long Range Planning Committee to expand upon the information gathered by the Buildings and Grounds Committee, and to further develop a vision for our parish going forward. Completed much-needed repairs to the West Sacristy wall, 100% of which were funded by a donation from an anonymous parishioner. Completed repairs to the slate roofs on both the Church and Rectory. Made significant improvements to the sound system with an intent to now focus on training of all users in order to achieve optimal sound quality. Began refurbishment of the organ. Building Community: Implemented a campaign to collect addresses from parishioners thereby enabling the creation of a weekly E-Blast to keep parishioners informed of current events. Created church/youth ministry Facebook pages to keep parishioners informed of current events. Launching a new parish website. Increased focus on the spiritual needs of our growing population of younger parishioners, including hiring a Youth Minister Created a Stewardship Committee to focus on building community. Financial: Sunday Collections were, and continue to be, a challenge leading us to explore how better to en gage our parishioners and build community. We need the participation of all of our parishion ers to fund our operations and we re making it easier for you with the recent introduction of on-line giving. Go to and click on Donate. Better yet, sign up for RECUR RING donations so that you sign up once and you re done! In anticipation of a potentially significant operating shortfall, we launched an incredibly success ful campaign to raise funds This is Our House! We raised approximately $155k and at the same time experienced a significant uptick in regular collections. As promised, we reserve the funds collected in excess of our needs for future maintenance/other expenses. Improved transparency in communicating financial results of the Parish to all parishioners. Met the goal set for us by the Archdiocese for the Annual Catholic Appeal, although the excess funds above and beyond the goal (100% of which are rebated to us) were minimal, as compared to the prior fiscal year when we received a $38K rebate. Successfully negotiated lower credit card fees with our bank (although we expect the number of credit card transactions to increase significantly with the introduction of on-line payment capabilities.) Received several bequests earmarked by the donors for specific projects (e.g., Adult Education, Sound System, Church Doors, Other Capital Improvements).
