2 2 Welcome to St. Margaret Mary Parish (continued from previous column) From A Grateful Heart A voice cries out: In the desert prepare the way of the LORD! Make straight in the wasteland a highway for our God!. Thus says the LORD: Here is my servant whom I uphold, my chosen one with whom I am pleased, upon whom I have put my spirit; he shall bring forth justice to the nations BAPTISM as necessary for mortals to enter a relationship with the Divine Jesus intended to bring all of God s creation into one flock under one shepherd (John 10:16) For this reason Jesus is born as one of us but, without sin and establishes for us an unbreakable instrument of Salvation in His Church. The Church is Jesus creation to administer the sacraments of his grace for calling us to him (in Baptism Confirmation and the Eucharist), healing our wounds (in the Sacraments of Reconciliation and the Sick) and calling us to serve one another in love (in Matrimony and Holy Orders) The Catechism of The Catholic Church (issued in 1992 by St. Pope Jon Paul II) gives us the teachings of the Church on Baptism and why Jesus submitted to the Baptism of John. Christ's Baptism #1223) All the Old Covenant is prefigured and finds it s fulfillment in Christ Jesus. He begins his public life after having himself baptized by St. John the Baptist in the Jordan. After his resurrection Christ gives this mission to his apostles: "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you". (continued next column) #1224) Our Lord voluntarily submitted himself to the baptism of St. John, intended for sinners, in order to "fulfill all righteousness." Jesus' gesture is a manifestation of his self-emptying. The Spirit who had hovered over the waters of the first creation descended then on the Christ as a prelude of the new creation, and the Father revealed Jesus as his "beloved Son." #1225) In his Passover Christ opened to all men the fountain of Baptism. He had already spoken of his Passion, which he was about to suffer in Jerusalem, as a "Baptism" with which he had to be baptized. The blood and water that flowed from the pierced side of the crucified Jesus are types of Baptism and the Eucharist, the sacraments of new life. From then on, it is possible "to be born of water and the Spirit" in order to enter the Kingdom of God. And #1123) "The purpose of the sacraments is to: sanctify men, to build up the Body of Christ and, to give worship to God. Because they are signs they also instruct by the Word that is preached. #1129) The Church affirms that for believers the sacraments of the New Covenant are necessary for salvation (The Council of Trent). The question is what will happen with the earthly possessions we have accumulated over the years? We can t take them with us, so we pass them on to others. We will leave a legacy behind to help others. Anyone who has named St. Margaret Mary in their Will, named STMM as a beneficiary in a life insurance policy, has left any assets to STMM or has designated STMM to received memorials after their death, is a member of the STMM Legacy Society. You simply need to let the parish office know you have done so. If you have not done this yet, it can be as simple as putting one sentence into your will. After all of my bills are paid, I want 10% of my estate to go to STMM Catholic Church. You can state it as dollar amount or percentage. Maybe you have few or no assets to leave behind. You can still become a member of the Legacy Society by simply making known to your family or your executor that you would like STMM listed in your death notice to receive memorials. This way you are leaving a legacy by allowing others to remember you through a gift to STMM. If you have already designated a gift to STMM, please be sure to let the parish office know.
