SACRED HEART PARISH HOLY WEEK SCHEDULE HOLY THURSDAY APRIL 2, 2015: Turned No doubt, some who were in the crowds of people acclaiming Jesus as he entered Jerusalem, were also lining the way to his crucifixion jeering him. They turned pretty quickly. I m not saying this was everybody. Some, though, surely for a variety of reasons were quick to turn against Jesus. He wasn t the political Messiah they were expecting. He didn t call down fire and brimstone on the Roman occupiers with legions of angels at his beck and call to fight against the oppressors. He didn t work some astounding miracle that everyone could agree proved onceand-for-all that he was truly the Son of God. He didn t have the support of the religious leadership of his day. Instead, Jesus stuck to his principles. He continued to teach and to heal. He spread the Good News of salvation and challenged the people to turn back to God and love one another. For that, he earned a painful death on a cross. But God s love is way more powerful than the changing mind of a fickle crowd, the brutality of oppressive conquerors, or a hypocritical religious leadership. God s goodness is rock-solid and as wide as the universe. That love overcomes the Cross, and death, and sin! That love brings us to the resurrection and new life. Classes begin again April 12 Blessing of the Easter Food Holy Saturday 12:00 pm Sacred Heart Church In central and eastern Europe, there are many ethnic customs for the observance of Lent and celebration of Easter. One of the most popular is the blessing of the Easter food. On Holy Saturday, families bring decorated baskets of specifically chosen and prepared food to church. The priest or deacon blesses this food, which will be eaten to mark the end of the penances of Lent and the celebration of the Resurrection. In earlier times, Lenten fasts were strictly observed and lasted throughout the season. Also, the consumption of meat and dairy products were restricted. Because the blessing marks the end of the Lenten penances, ham, veal, sausage, butter, eggs and cheese are often included in the baskets. Each food has a symbolic meaning. The meat is a sign of abundance and the symbol of the end of Lenten penance. The hardboiled egg symbolizes the tomb and new life. Butter and cake in the shape of a lamb reminds us that Jesus is the Lamb of God, sacrificed for humanity s sins. Salt may also be included because it is necessary to sustain life and a reminder to be the salt of the earth. Some make a horseradish and beet mixtures to symbolize the bitter passion of Jesus. Candles acknowledge that Christ is the light of the world. A special bread, which varies by ethnic group and symbolizes Christ as the bread of life, is usually included in the baskets. Please join us on Holy Saturday for this special blessing. SCHOOL NEWS Today is Palm Sunday, marking our final week of Lent. All students will participate in two Lenten traditions: On Thursday, April 2 nd at 9:15am there will be the service of Washing of the Feet, and at 11:15am Living Stations of the Cross will be acted out. Both services will be held in the church and then our Spring Break will begin after the last service at noon. We will be out of school until Monday, April 13 th. Happy Easter and enjoy your Spring Break! We are having a new contest for Grand Receipts and Box Tops! The contest begins April 13 th so start collecting those Box Tops and receipts now! You can drop off at either our school office or the Gathering Space at church. Thank you for your support to Sacred Heart School. Have a blessed Easter and spring break. How can you help? 1) Have your kids bring some canned food to Mass next Sunday as a Lenten remembrance of the poor! 2) Donate your time and energy by volunteering at the Food Pantry any Wednesday morning. Food is packed at 8:00am in the Rectory Garage, and distributed in the Courtyard at 10am. 3) OR gather a group of friends and go down some Saturday morning to pack non-perishable foods. ELIZABETH MINISTRY ROSARY The Elizabeth Ministry will say the Rosary in the Chapel upstairs in the Parish offices once a month at 9am on the following Thursday mornings: April 16 May 14 June 4 The Rosary lasts minutes and is a lovely way to connect with other women/moms in the parish. RESPECT LIFE MINISTRY Join our Respect Life Ministry in our weekly prayer for life: That the crucifixion of Christ for all people may teach us that there is no such thing as a worthless life, or a person God does not love. We pray to the Lord! OUTREACH OPPORTUNITIES Tuesdays and Thursdays during the School Year Tutor Elementary students at St. Columbanus School. Leave SH at 9am, return by 1:30pm. Wednesdays St. Columbanus Food Pantry: Packing of Food at 7am at St. Columbanus Rectory Garage; Distribution of Food at 10am. Thursdays Shadow a Minister of Care at Lake- Cook Nursing Home or Glen Oaks Nursing Home. Contact the Parish Office for more information. St. Columbanus can always use our help. You can sign up for this Ignatian digital prayer experience by visiting: Jesuits.org/story?TN=PROJECT LENTEN REGULATIONS Abstinence from meat is to be observed by all Catholics 14 years old and older on Ash Wednesday and on all the Fridays of Lent. Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday by all Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet 59. Those who are bound by this may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to one s needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. The special Paschal fast, as well as abstinence, are prescribed for Good Friday and encouraged for Holy Saturday. THE SARTO FUND Remember the Sacred Heart Sarto Fund established by Msgr. Reynold Hillenbrand? The Fund enables our parish to assist members in need without causing them undue embarrassment. Many have been so grateful that they have later reimbursed the fund, although to do so is not required. As you know our parish supports many worthy outreaches; but this one is reserved for our own. Currently the Sarto Fund is somewhat depleted; we appreciate any financial support you can provide. HOLY THURSDAY COLLECTION Our Holy Thursday Collection will be for the Sarto Fund. STEWARDSHIP Donkeys have served humanity for six thousand years as pack animals and for farm work. We think of them as stubborn and unintelligent. In ancient Israel only wealthy people rode on donkeys. Everybody else walked. As a descendant of King David, Jesus rode a donkey into Jerusalem. The crowd hoped he would start a violent revolt against the Romans. Yet for us, Jesus riding a donkey is a reminder that he lived simply, avoided status, and was truly humble. Jesus is the one who took the form of a slave and humbled himself... to the point of death, and also the one whom God greatly exalted (Philippians 2:7, 8, 9). As we follow Jesus to Calvary and beyond, we too suffer, yet we are the children of a heavenly king who has ransomed us from death and sin.
