2 Hearts Alive in Worship: Liturgy and Prayer My only desire is to unite myself to God (St. Paul of the Cross) A note from Father Dean Upcoming Surgery For the past year and a half, I have been suffering from pain origina ng in my back. The vertebrae at L2 and L3 press on my nerves crea ng extreme pain in the upper right leg. The pain has been tremendous at mes. During this me, I visited my neurosurgeon. I was at physical therapy for six weeks. Then I had an epidural. I had a herniated disk taken care of in January. Physical therapy a couple of more mes this year. Three cor sone shots. Nothing has relieved the pain I have. I went to see my neurosurgeon at the end of August, and said to him "enough is enough". Through the last MRI I had done, the doctor and I learned I have scoliosis in this part of my back. We scheduled the surgery for November 28. That fell through. Last week I was able to schedule the surgery for December 21 to alleviate this pain. Such a Christmas present I get! I should be having the vertebrae separated and screws put in my back. I will be having the surgery at Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington. To the best of my knowledge I will have two weeks of recovery with a brace and a bone growth simulator. So I will not be in the parish during the recovery me. Hopefully I will be a new man and able to walk and hike again. I know that I have your prayers and best wishes. Blessings to you. Fr. Dean Semmer THE 2017 STEWARDSHIP REPORT IS NOW AVAILABLE! Copies are located in the Gathering Space and in the Church Ves bule PRAYER FOR RENEW MY CHURCH Lord Jesus, you speak to us today, as you spoke to holy men and women who have gone before us. in every age and in our own me, you call to us and say: Renew My Church. Pour out the gi of your Holy Spirit upon us, and so enable us to hear you clearly to listen to each other a en vely to imagine our future boldly to discern your direc on wisely to persevere in your holy will courageously to stay together in charity to surrender our own plans readily to embrace the greater good to hand on your gi s to future genera ons. May we remain in the holy company of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the apostles, and all the saints. May their example and presence inspire us with pa ent confidence in the work of your grace. We ask this of you who live and reign with the Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

4 Hearts Alive in Worship: Liturgy and Prayer My only desire is to unite myself to God (St. Paul of the Cross) Liturgical Ministry at Sacred Heart Hai an Farmers Win Big with New Storage Technology Liturgical Ministers Volunteer for Christmas! There are a few vacant slots and outstanding swap requests for Lectors, Eucharis c Ministers, Altar Servers and Greeters for the 4th Sunday of Advent (Saturday December 23 and Sunday morning December 24), as well as for some of our Christmas Liturgies. Mass will be celebrated on Christmas Eve at 3:00 pm, 5:00 pm and 10:00 pm, and on Christmas morning at 10:00 am. We especially invite high school and college students to volunteer as altar servers, lectors and Eucharis c ministers. We also encourage families to serve as greeters who welcome friends and family members to Sacred Heart. If you d like to volunteer, please contact Liturgy Coordinator Kathy Janega Keenan at kjanega@shparish.com or (847) , Ext Current liturgical ministers can also fill swap requests directly on Sacred Heart s MSP web terminal. Lectors, Eucharis c Ministers, Greeters & Altar Servers MSP update deadline is Monday, December 11th. The new schedule for Liturgical Ministers running from January 7 through March 21 is now in the works, and we need your help! Please remember to log into MSP to update your service preferences, can t serve mes and dates, and contact informa on. Earlier this year, we introduced a new grain storage technology to our Agriculture project's farmers. Thanks to great research and networking by Winnetka's Michael More e, we implemented a Pilot Program using PICS bags from Purdue University. PICS bags have been used across Africa for more than 15 years, with more than 5 million bags sold to farmers and small grain merchants. The PICS technology prevents damage to corn, beans, etc. from insects, fungus, mold and rodents without the use of chemicals. h ps://picsnetwork.org The bags are economical and easy to use, as well as being reusable. Farmers can then safely store their grain and beans for sale when prices are higher than at harvest me. Entrepreneurial farmers can buy grain and beans from others and then resell it later, hopefully at a profit. Michael and Wisly Jasmin, our project director, made several presenta ons to the farmers in late July. Then they organized a pilot program with several groups of farmers. The ini al results are very promising. One group bought five PICS bags, paying $4 per bag. They purchased corn for $18 per bag (about 110 pounds) in early August and stored it in the PICS bags. Two weeks ago, prices had risen to $30 per bag, so they decided to sell. When they opened their PICS bags, all the corn was dry, without insect or fungus/mold infesta on. No rodents had invaded the bags either. In less than three months, these entrepreneurial farmers made a profit of about $40 on an ini al investment of $111 ($90 for the corn and $20 for 5 bags) they can reuse the bags 3 or 4 more mes with no addi onal investment. They plan to use the profits to buy more corn in December harvest, and to expand their own plan ngs in January and February. Understandably, the farmers are VERY HAPPY. "When can we buys more of these bags?" they asked. We have ordered 1000 more PICS bags for sale to our 230 farmers when the bags arrive from Tanzania. We hope to find a donor to underwrite the $4000 cost of the PICS bags and transporta on. Since the bags will be sold to the farmers, the revenues will provide the funds for purchasing addi onal bags. Do you know anyone who can help us get these 1000 PICS bags to our farmers? If so, please contact Gerry Keenan at gkeenan@shparish.com or
5 Hearts Connected for Community: Parish Life Love is the beauty of the soul (St. Augus ne) ADVENT REFLECTIONS Advent is a me for transforma on, prepara on, reflec on and new beginnings. Jesus tells us to WATCH and BE READY during this special liturgical season. How are you ready, and for what are you ready? How are you watching and for what are you watching? Are we ready for Christ when he comes at the end of me? Are we ready for Christ coming into the world? Are we ready to meet our Lord and pleased with how we ve been living our lives? Have we followed the teachings of Christ and lived our lives with Jesus in our hearts? Have we followed his Gospel call to love the Lord and our neighbor, too? As we prepare ourselves for the coming of Christ into the world and into our hearts, let us keep in mind how we can be Christ to others during this season of Advent. Let us keep in mind how we can share the gi s we have been given to help prepare others for the coming of our Lord, Jesus Christ. STEWARDSHIP IN SCRIPTURE: FOOD FOR THOUGHT Prepare the way of the Lord - MARK 1:3 We are all called to live a holy life. We are all called to invite others to live holy lives. Living a stewardship lifestyle, being grateful and generous with our gi s, does just that it puts us on the path to holiness and it invites others to be holy, too. ADVENT FAMILY PRAYER Dear God, thank you for giving us these four weeks to prepare to celebrate the birth of your Son. We are so thankful for all people that help us along this path we re traveling to welcome Jesus.
