2 Dear Parishioner, A little history about the Sacrament of the Sick from the Catechism of the Catholic Church. "From ancient times in the liturgical traditions of both east and west, we have testimonies to the practice of anointing of the sick with blessed oil. Over the centuries the Anointing of the Sick was conferred more and more exclusively on those at the point of death. Because of this it received the name "Extreme Unction". Notwithstanding this evolution, the liturgy has never failed to beg the Lord that the sick person may recover his health." Christ's compassion toward the sick and his many healings of every kind of infirmity are a resplendent sign that "God has visited His people," and that the kingdom of God is close at hand. Jesus has the power not only to heal, but to forgive sins; He has come to heal the whole man, soul and body; He is the physician the sick have need of. Christ invites his disciples to follow him...to share in his ministry of compassion and healing. In today's scripture readings God speaks to Moses and Aaron. In Leviticus those words seem harsh because the leprous person is to declare himself as unclean, and be separated from the community. There was no medical cure for leprosy and, because it was believed to be highly contagious, isolation was necessary to protect the community. Now comes Jesus and a whole new approach to physical debilitation. Jesus also takes a whole new approach to spiritual debilitation. He empowers his disciples to forgive sins. The church empowers the successors to the disciples to anoint the sick and pray for their healing. Part and parcel of the sacrament of the sick is the forgiveness of sins. It is a package deal. Many of us grew up thinking of the sacrament of extreme unction as the "last rites"; in other words right behind the priest came the undertaker. Thus for some people, fear of death persuaded them to forgo this sacrament. Back to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, here are the very comforting words used in anointing the sick. Through this holy anointing may the Lord in his love and mercy help you with the grace of the Holy Spirit. May the Lord, who frees you from sin, save you, and raise you up. If you, or one of your loved ones, is seriously ill please call the rectory. Father Heidenreich and Father Kisaka would be most happy to visit in the home, hospice, or hospital and to administer this wonderful healing and forgiving sacrament. Also the sacrament will be offered to anyone dealing with illness at two Masses, 5:00 P.M. on Saturday, April 14 and 10:30 A.M. on Sunday, April 15. Yours very truly, ~ Mike McNulty

Why not give it a try TODAY? RELIGIOUS VOCATION FAIR Sunday, February 12 th, a Religious Life and Diocesan Priesthood Fair will be held in the Gathering Space of the Church after each of the Masses. Sisters, Brothers, and priests will present to explain their ministries and answer any questions you have about their vocation. There will be table displays and handouts. TODAY! Please plan to visit the fair to learn more about the many good works being done by these women and men, and witness the vitality and joy of those who have responded to a vocation to religious life or priesthood. The Sacred Heart Athletic Committee (SHAC) is looking for two new volunteers to join the committee. SHAC is a subcommittee of the School Board and oversees our schools athletic program.. The Committee meets the first Tuesday of each month during the school year. If you are interested in helping make our Athletic Program the very best experience for our student athletes, we would love to have you be a part of the committee. The 4 th & 5 th graders recently had a visit from a special guest. Adam Rex, author and illustrator of many books, joined us at school. He talked about his previous books: The True Meaning of Smekday and Frankenstein Makes a Sandwich, among others, and he read excerpts of his newly released book Cold Cereal. Students were able to purchase his books, and get them personally signed. We would like to thank The Book Stall in Winnetka for sponsoring this event. SHS recently participated the first annual "Respect Week". This was a week dedicated to focusing attention on respecting each other and ending bullying behaviors. To bring attention to the importance of treating each other with respect, there were several activities: 1. Lei off name calling: Plastic necklace leis with tags on them were passed out to all classrooms. There was a brief discussion about why name-calling is not respectful and how words can hurt people. The Leis served as reminders for children to respect each other. 2. Respect/No Bullying Poster Contest: Fourth and fifth graders made posters about respect & anti-bullying which were posted around the school. The posters were voted on by the "Respect Committee" (composed of 8th graders) to determine which poster had the best message and best overall look. 3. Shade out name calling: Plastic sunglasses with messages were handed out to all kids. They served as fun reminders to respect each other and not partake in bullying behaviors. 4. Talks about respect & anti-bullying. For some of the younger grades, the social worker came in with members of the respect committee to talk about respect and no bullying. This was a very important week filled with lots of love, respect and friendship for everyone. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS Reconciliation services begin this weekend and continue throughout the next months in preparation for Easter. This morning s 3 rd and 5 th grade classes will participate in reconciliation in the gym. Wednesday evening classes will have their reconciliation this Wednesday at 7:00 PM in church. Don t forget to stop by the Religious Vocation Fair today after the morning Masses to learn about the many orders of women and men religious, sisters, priests and brothers and deacons. And remember to pray often for vocations to priesthood and religious life. The Sacred Heart Religious Education Board meets tomorrow evening at 7:00 PM in the school. All are invited to the SOUP SUPPER, Wednesday, Feb. 22, after the 6:15 Ash Wed. Mass. Come over to the Parish Center and enjoy delicious soups made by members of the Religious Education Board. What a great way to begin the Lenten season, in solidarity with the hungry of this world. Donations will go to the St. Columbanus Food Pantry. There is NO Religious Education next weekend due to President s Day holiday. ATTENTION ALL ALTAR SERVERS, EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS, GREETERS, AND LECTORS! We are preparing to create the next schedule for Altar Servers, Eucharistic Ministers, Greeters, and Lectors. The Spring schedule will run from Monday, March 19th, through Sunday, June 17th.
