2 HEART TO HEART pastor to parish Crisp Weather I love the fall. I find that slight nip in the air invigorating. My office is on the second floor of what used to be the convent building. The top half of the east-looking wall of my office is all windows. Just beyond the windows are trees. This summer whenever I sat at my computer, which faces the windows, I felt like I was inside a tree house, there were so many leafy branches. It s very pleasant up there. The leaves are all turning some great colors, red and gold waving back at me as I write this column. Seasons The colors remind me of that Old Testament passage from the Book of Ecclesiastes (3:1-11): there is an appointed time for everything, and a time for every thing under the heavens. Of course, that in turn, reminds me of the song. All I have to do these days is look out my office window and I hear in my head the melody turn, turn, turn. Here in Chicago the seasons turn and the weather changes. It s one of the things I like about living in this area. I m not sure that I could live permanently in an area of the country where the changing of the seasons isn t heralded by a change in the type of weather for the region. Although I must say I wish winter wasn t as long as it is. Anyone myself included can tolerate a bad winter in Chicago if it only lasted a total of, say, four weeks. But winter tends to go on and on. A whole string of gray, overcast cold winter days gets to be a bit depressing. So we ve got to find ways to promote good cheer, those of us who cannot take the time to be snowbirds. Who knows, maybe I ll get a ladder and tape green leaves to the trees outside my office window in the hopes of fooling myself that spring/summer has once again arrived. I know I m not going to do that. You know I m not going to do that. Ah well, there are other, more practical ways, to keep on smiling through the depths of winter. For now, I am enjoying the view from the upstairs windows of the office building and hoping that it stays this way throughout the season and that the fall season extends itself for a long time. Liturgical Calendar Seven weeks from now, the liturgical calendar will turn the page into a new season with Advent. That new season will herald in the new Church year, including the predominance of the Gospel of Mark at Sunday Masses. Currently, we are in the lectionary cycle wherein Matthew predominates the Sundays of the year (mostly during Ordinary Time). With the First Sunday of Advent we move on to Mark s gospel text. Because it s the shortest of the four gospels, we will also get a good dose of John s gospel which doesn t have its own lectionary cycle. With the First Sunday of Advent our parish will also see some enhancements to the Sunday liturgies. In the weeks ahead, I ll be dedicating a handful of columns to those enhancements, introducing and explaining them. For now I just want to say there is an appointed time for everything, and a time for every thing under the heavens, including some tweaks to our beautiful Sunday liturgies which will make them even more beautiful and more in praise of the God who calls us to discipleship in Christ through the Spirit. Did You Know? In preparation for the new gospel cycle which begins on the First Sunday of Advent, Father Lanza will be offering an overview of the Gospel of Mark on November 15, starting at 9:00 a.m. in the parish center. It will take about two-and-a-half hours and include presentation as well as group sharing and discussion. Refreshments will be served.

7 STEWARDSHIP GIVING - October 5, 2014 YTD Actual Sunday Collection: $ 205,341 YTD Budgeted Sunday Collection: $ 217,404 Shortfall: $( 12,063) STEWARDSHIP The Gospel today has some surprising twists. A king is hosting his son s wedding feast. Guests are invited surely a great honor. But some invitees are too busy and refuse. Others get angry and attack the messengers. The king punishes those who murdered his servants and opens up the banquet to anyone. The hall fills up with a motley crew of guests. The king spots one man who is not dressed for the occasion and cannot explain why, so he is thrown out. Yet wasn t the man pulled in off the street? Yes, but the king had a wedding garment for each guest, and this man did not bother to pick one up, thereby insulting his host. We are all invited to the table of the Lord. Our outer wedding garment is to dress with care and respect. Our inner garment is to put on Christ, clothing ourselves in his love and goodness in order to be worthy of the Kingdom.
