Sacred Heart Parish Stewardship Report Fiscal 2017 THE BOTTOM LINE A message from Fr. Steve Lanza As I reflect on the three-plus years I ve been the pastor here, I am amazed and inspired by all that we have accomplished as a faith community centered in the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The Parish Transformation process was very instructive in enabling us to identify a number of clear and objective goals. The success of the Legacy of the Heart campaign reflects the commitment of our faith family to the care of this parish, which was built by previous generations and which we are committed to leave in good stead for those who follow. As part of the pilot phase of Renew My Church, we have had the opportunity to take an indepth look at who we are as a parish and we have given focus to the ways in which our community lives out the themes of praying, sharing, growing and belonging. We truly are a blessed family. The recent events surrounding Founder s Day, especially the Mass with Cardinal Cupich, are a cause for reflection and celebration of our faith family, a family that takes very seriously its commitment to share of ourselves with our brothers and sisters around the world. We are committed to being good stewards of all that we have been given by God. This report is one of the ways that accountability and transparency assist us in being good stewards. Thank you for your continued support as we move forward. Be active members! Go on the offensive! Play down the field, build a better world, a world of brothers and sisters, a world of justice, of love, of peace, of fraternity, of solidarity. Play always on the offensive! Pope Francis, Address, World Youth Day, July 27, 2013 There are no difficulties, trials, or misunderstandings to fear, provided we remain united to God as branches to the vine, provided we do not lose our friendship with him, provided we make ever more room for him in our lives. This is especially so whenever we feel poor, weak, and sinful, because God grants strength to our weakness, riches to our poverty, conversion and forgiveness to our sinfulness. The Lord is so rich in mercy: every time, if we go to him, he forgives us. Let us trust in God s work! Father Steve Pope Francis, Homily, Mass of Confirmation, April 28, 2013 Praying Sharing Growing Belonging

Sacred Heart Parish Stewardship Report Fiscal 2017 Financial Statement Footnotes 1) Sunday Collections In Pew The decline in collections is consistent with our decision to reduce the collection budget in light of current trends. Given that we also reduced selected expenses, we were able to end the year with positive operating results. 2) Tuition The variance reflects a decline in school enrollment from 222 students in FY 2016 to 191 students in FY 2017, offset to some degree by an increase in tuition from year-to-year and improved tuition collection efforts. 3) Appeal In FY 2016, we conducted an in-pew appeal to cover a forecasted operating shortfall. Based on projected trends, we reduced our operating budget in FY 2017, thus negating the need for a similar appeal in FY ) Miscellaneous Income Includes Mass stipends, stole fees (donations for the sacraments of Baptism and Marriage), bulletin advertisement revenues and facility rental income. The increase from FY 2016 to FY 2017 is primarily attributable to an increase of approximately $20K in our Annual Catholic Appeal rebate and $30K in rental income from the lease of our school building in the summer months to Galileo Learning LLC, for a STEAM camp. 5) Salaries and Benefits The decline from FY 2016 to FY 2017 is consistent with the decline in number of faculty members due to reduced enrollment. 6) Miscellaneous Expenses Includes speakers, hospitality, dues and special programs. The decline reflects savings realized across many of these areas. 7) The planned subsidy to the school of $180K is an amount agreed to by the Finance Council and the School Board. Lower-than-expected expense in the religious education area reduced the subsidy required by that program from a planned amount of $20,000 to an actual amount of approximately $6,000. Additional Financial Information and Footnote June 30, 2017 June 30, 2016 Cash on Hand Checking 1 $954,150 $1,211,238 School Endowment Fund Market Value 3,151,705 2,932,584 To Teach Who Christ Is Account 962,701 0 School Endowment Fund Cost Basis 2,669,175 2,672,613 1) Decline reflects $170K paid to consultants for our capital campaign, as required by the Archdiocese of Chicago.

Sacred Heart Parish Stewardship Report Fiscal 2017 NEW AND NOTABLE IN MINISTRY FISCAL 2017 LEGACY OF THE HEART CAMPAIGN Based on parishioner feedback gleaned from a feasibility study conducted in the summer of 2016, we embarked upon our Legacy of the Heart campaign in January Our goal was to raise $2.87M in funds to address: critical maintenance needs in our aging campus buildings, noninfrastructure improvements to the interior of our beautiful church building (for example, painting, carpeting and stencil work), stewardship with our less fortunate brothers and sisters in Christ at St. Columbanus in Chicago, St. Jean Baptiste in Haiti and the Father Paul Foundation in Sri Lanka, and fulfillment of our $632,000 obligation to the Archdiocesan To Teach Who Christ Is campaign. We currently have $3.3M in pledges from 290 parish families, representing 115% of our $2.87M goal. We have already collected $963,000 on these pledges, ensuring that we have met our To Teach Who Christ Is obligation to the Archdiocese. In addition, our school boiler replacement project, including asbestos abatement, is nearly complete at a cost of approximately $310,000 versus the estimate of $275,000 that we used in developing our total campaign goal. Next on our list of priorities are repairs to the stained glass windows in the church, including exterior protection frames on those windows, and replacement of the slate roofs on both the church and rectory. RENEW MY CHURCH As one of the five parishes (in addition to Sts. Faith Hope and Charity, St. Philip the Apostle, St. Joseph and St. Francis Xavier) in the North Shore Pilot Grouping of Renew My Church, we began the process of meeting with teams from the other parishes in the grouping in March, After months of prayer and discussion, the final document detailing our deliberations on various scenarios for the future of our five parishes is now headed to the Archdiocesan Commission for Renew My Church. The Commission will take a look at our thoughts and proposals and will take one of two possible actions: It can forward the final document as is with the Commission s recommendation to the Cardinal, or It could also possibly send the document back to us for further work before it gets sent to the Cardinal. We expect feedback within the next several months. PENTECOST VIDEO We created a parish video that we played at all the Masses on Pentecost weekend, with the goal of sharing a reflection of who we are as a faith community a parish alive in spirited praying, growing, sharing, and belonging. You can view the video on our website at We are grateful for the talented people who created the video and for the numerous parishioners who volunteered to be interviewed and share their Sacred Heart experiences. Due to the tremendous amount of time and effort that goes into this process, we plan to create a new video every few years. COMMUNITY LIFE (as reported by Judy Pyke) Sacred Heart welcomed several new Catholics into our faith community at the Easter Vigil. A special temporary baptismal font was built to facilitate the six adult baptisms and incorporate a full-immersion type of experience. We have created a new Welcoming Ministry for new parishioners. Sacred Heart parishioner Patty Sanfilippo personally meets with each new parishioner family to introduce them to the parish, and presents them with a welcome basket of wine, Sacred Heart cookies and brochures about our ministries, school and religious education program. We also created a four-page summary brochure of that same information. Finally, each new parishioner family is invited to dinner at the rectory to personally meet with Fr. Steve, Judy Pyke and Patty Sanfilippo. Cocktails in the Courtyard continues to be a success. Recently, we hosted Cocktails prior to a special performance by Italian duet SatorDuo that same evening. SatorDuo, formed by violinist Paolo Castellani and guitarist Francesco Di Giandomenico, specializes in contemporary Spanish and South American music. Their U.S. tour is hosted by Chiesa Nuova, led by artistic director, Fr. Bob Hutmacher, o.f.m.

Sacred Heart Parish Stewardship Report Fiscal 2017 Like Cocktails in the Courtyard, our Adult Formation Team (which was created through the Parish Transformation Process), continues to hold successful adult education/ formation events to build community and catechesis among adult parishioners. Parishioner Mike Leonard joined us in September to present excerpts from his PBS documentary series InCommon with Mike Leonard. Cardinal Cupich presided at the 10:30 am Mass here on October 15 th to help us celebrate Founder s Day and our 120 th Anniversary. The music at the 10:30 Mass included a Brass Quartet and percussion, with the Sacred Heart Adult and Children s Choirs. A joyful reception followed in the Parish Center with refreshments and an abundance of photo -taking with our very patient Cardinal Cupich! We hosted a new community-building event during Founder s Weekend this year as an alternative to Oktoberfest. This simpler event, Family Movie Night, included two food trucks, additional snacks and (kid & adult) beverages for purchase, along with the movie Boss Baby being shown on a huge inflatable screen in the backyard of the rectory. Fall decorations and lighting created a very fun atmosphere for family fun. For the first time since 2005, we published a parish directory. Parishioners have been asking for a directory so they can connect with one another. Copies are available in the parish office. MUSIC MINISTRY (as reported by Todd Gresick) In the past year, three new cantors, Kristin Lolli, Katie Padley- Bolo and Bernadette Garza, have become active in helping to lead the assembly in song. Three of our teenage musicians who have been singing or playing an instrument at Sacred Heart over the years, Allison Thabit, Annie Romano and Timothy Zajdela, have departed to attend college and will continue their studies in music. MINISTERS OF CARE (as reported by Mike McNulty) We have recently trained several new Ministers of Care, enabling us to be able to bring Holy Communion, not only to the Catholic residents at the nursing homes, but also to any parishioners who are unable to get to church due to illness, temporary or permanent, at their homes or in hospitals. SACRED HEART SCHOOL (as reported by Kristen Fink) This year, Sacred Heart School started a program called Prayer Families. We have eleven Prayer Families, each led by an 8th grader, made up of students from each grade all the way down to preschool. Each month, the 8th grader prepares a lesson and activity to share with their group, focusing on one of the eight beatitudes. Prayer Families allow us the opportunity to share our faith across grade levels while giving our 8th grade Confirmation candidates a chance to lead and teach younger students. We introduced a new Parent and Tot class this year, organized and led by Laura Wettersten, Early Childhood Coordinator and Kindergarten teacher. This class is offered twice a month to children three months through three years of age, along with their parents. This is a wonderful opportunity for parents of young children to connect with other parents while their children socialize, learn, and make new friends. Also this year we implemented multi-grade art, music and advisory classes. All three junior high classes (grades 6, 7 and 8) are mixed up for these specials. Another new grouping is singlegender PE and STEAM classes for grades 7 and 8, meaning 7th and 8th grade girls have PE together while the 7th and 8th grade boys work in the STEAM lab and vice versa. It is important that our students have opportunities to interact with as many different people as possible, hopefully leading to new friendships, mutual learning and enriched class discussions. Our STEAM lab has been up and running since January of The lab integrates technology exploration with academics in a powerful hands-on, minds-on learning environment. Core subject knowledge is reinforced through applied learning engaging and motivating students while improving academic performance. This updated lab prepares learners to compete in a global economy by developing 21 st century skills such as problem solving, critical thinking, project management, communication, and collaboration. The most exciting addition to the lab is our brand new 3D printer. We have made many physical improvements to the school over the past year. Thanks to the generosity of so many of our Nite Lites supporters, we were able to purchase and install new lunch tables this summer as well as repaint the gym. Also, as part of the Legacy of the Heart Campaign, new boilers were

Sacred Heart Parish Stewardship Report Fiscal 2017 installed in the school. We updated the lobby with some fresh paint and the new logo. The updated sign in front of the school also includes the new logo. We love what the new logo represents and are so pleased to showcase it both inside and outside of the school building. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION (as reported by Sue Lehocky) Religious Education continues to build on the initiatives begun last year and to begin new ones in the program year. We began our year with an Open House and Opening Mass in the Sacred Heart School Gym. Our Open House was a more casual way for children to meet their teachers and classmates. We greeted returning families and welcomed new ones. We are grateful to all the students and parents who served at our Opening Mass and to Father Dan for helping us to begin our year with worship and celebration. At the Mass we gave a special blessing to our wonderful catechists who share so much of their faith, time and talent with our children! Our fantastic Hospitality Committee sponsored refreshments for Open House and will continue to serve coffee and snacks for parents throughout the year each Sunday morning at 9:45 a.m. This year we plan to pilot a family Mass on four Sundays at 4:30 pm. You will hear more about that soon, as the first Family Mass is scheduled for the 5th of November. We continue to use the innovative Chosen program for our 8 th grade and are piloting a program called Alpha for Youth in 7 th grade this year. Also new this year, our 8 th grade Confirmation candidates will serve at parish liturgies in a variety of roles as greeters, lectors, altar servers, music ministers and more. Our family-based program, Family Faith Connection, had a successful first year. We have made a few adjustments and are looking forward to a great second year! LITURGY (as reported by Kathy Janega) We continue to focus on stewardship and on implementing the prayer and worship goals of the Parish Transformation plan. Here are some highlights of the past year: The Ministry Fair held over Pentecost weekend helped recruit new members to the ministries of music, altar server, lector, Extraordinary Minister of Communion and art & environment. The new practice of training Altar Servers periodically throughout the school year and immediately getting them into the serving rotation by pairing them with an experienced server has proven to be effective. We added 10 new servers just before summer, and will schedule periodic training sessions as interest arises. We are working to get our teens actively involved in liturgical ministries. Our roster of active Eucharistic Ministers and Lectors now includes several high school and college students. The addition of a liturgical ministry component to 8th Graders Confirmation preparation has produced three new lectors and many more greeters, and all have been scheduled to serve. We also try to schedule families with EMs, lectors, altar servers and greeters to serve together. Special liturgies continue to generate significant interest and participation, especially the annual Mass of Remembrance on All Souls Day (remembering loved ones who died during the past year), the Thanksgiving Day liturgy (including parishioner reflections on gratitude), and the Memorial Day liturgy at Sacred Heart Cemetery. We continue to look for ways to enrich the spiritual lives of our liturgical ministers. This year, we offered a 3-part webinar for Eucharistic Ministers from Liturgy Training Publications. All liturgical ministers were also invited to a morning of reflection sponsored by members of the Daughters of St. Francis de Sales, and featuring Fr. Pat McGrath, SJ, who spoke on Learning to Pray from Where We Are.

Of course, the preeminent form of prayer for our parish is the celebration of the Eucharist the Mass on Sundays. In addition, there are many other ways parishioners engage in praying: Our weekly prayer group has been meeting for 40 years The Men of Sacred Heart (MOSH) prayer group has been meeting for 25 years. Scripture Study and Faith Sharing groups Elizabeth Ministry Praying Other groups that spring up organically when parishioners are in crisis, are critically ill or have died.

Sharing Sharing is three-fold at Sacred Heart: within our parish family, within the Archdiocese and around the world. Within our parish, we have a long-established Sarto Fund to assist parishioners experiencing financial difficulties, Ministers of Care bring Holy Communion to homebound and hospitalized parishioners, and our community comes together like no other to support and affirm parishioners needing extra care and comfort. Within the broader Chicagoland area, we cook and serve food once a month at A Just Harvest and we make weekly visits to nearby nursing homes. At our sharing parish, St. Columbanus, our efforts include tutoring at their parish school, adopting families in an extensive Christmas sharing program, distributing food from their food pantry at Thanksgiving and Christmas, making donations to the pantry, and participating in pulpit and choir exchanges. We actively support the Fr. Paul Foundation in Sri Lanka, St. Jean Baptiste in Haiti and Sacred Heart School in Tanzania. 10 Growing We are disciples who celebrate our faith by growing in our understanding of that relationship with Christ! Children Adults Baptisms 35 8 Received into the Faith 0 2 First Communions 62 5 Confirmations 82 5 Marriages N/A 9 Funerals 0 19 As of 10/17 FY 2017 FY 2016 School Enrollment Religious Ed Enrollment We foster that growth in our adults through small faith groups and a faith formation speakers program. This past Lent, we hosted renowned author and stewardship expert, Tracy Welliver, as our mission speaker. Sacred Heart School is proud to continue to expand its Inclusive Education Initiative which seeks to provide appropriate services and care for all types of learners at both ends of the bell curve. We are one of only a handful of archdiocesan schools with a state of the art STEAM lab. STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics. It is an interdisciplinary approach which develops students abilities in critic thinking and problem solving. We have received the Apple Distinguished School award for ten years running. Our religious education program is equally proud to have launched a new family catechesis program called Family Faith Connection. Participating families gather together as a group once a month for a meal and faith sharing, and are given projects and assignments to work on at home in the interim.

Belonging Sacred Heart is blessed with a strong sense of community fostered by a number of events including: Cocktails in the Courtyard New Family Potlucks Memorial Day Mass at Sacred Heart Cemetery Oktoberfest (which we hope to bring back in 2018) Family Movie Night St. Patrick s Day Party Founder s Day festivities School and religious education fun runs Thanksgiving Day Mass and witness talks Advent by Candlelight Men s Club Events e.g. Cubs game watch parties, poker nights, speakers, etc. NiteLites, the annual school fundraiser Those who have love are born of God; those who have no love are not born of God. This is the great sign, the great distinction. Possess whatever you want, but if you are lacking this one thing, the rest will be of no value to you. Saint Augustine

Buildings and Grounds Notes As mentioned previously, with guidance and direction from the Finance Council, we will continue the process of obtaining bids for the next two priority projects identified in the Legacy of the Heart campaign: repairs to the exterior framing of the stained glass windows and replacement of the slate roofs on the church and rectory. The stained glass window project will be the first priority. The frames are in need of major repairs in order to ensure that the integrity of the stained glass is not compromised. Through consultation with Diprato Rigali, a well-known church restoration company and other contractors, we estimated the cost of this project to be $200,000 when we developed our goals for the campaign. This is a significant process involving the repair of stained glass in a few spots, removal and replacement of the existing protecting covering (on the outside of the actual stained glass), repair of window ventilators, and repair and repainting of the exterior window frames. Through the use of operating reserves established over the past several years, we were able to perform several necessary building projects during fiscal 2017 not contemplated by the Legacy of the Heart campaign, including the following: Replacement of the parish office roof $30,395 Note: Approximately one-half of this amount was funded by an anonymous parishioner Rectory tuckpointing $ 5,240 Rectory front portico roof repair $ 3,650 Parish Center basement classroom painting $ 3,200 Parish Office exterior painting $ 9,000 The projects noted above relating to the parish office building ensure that the building will remain secure (and dry), since the capital campaign did not seek to address the exterior needs of the building.
