HEART TO HEART pastor to parish A Huge Thank You Kathy Janega Keenan has served as the part-time liturgy coordinator at Sacred Heart for the past two years. In that time she has recruited, trained and organized servers, Eucharistic Ministers and lectors, enhanced the use of Ministry Scheduler Pro software that helps ministers schedule themselves for our weekend liturgies, prepared the weekend liturgies (presider and lector notebooks with the Universal Prayer, otherwise known as the petitions or Prayers of the Faithful), prepared for special liturgies and rites throughout the year, chaired the liturgy committee, and coordinated with the school and religious education program for their special liturgies (such as First Reconciliation, Confirmation, First Communion and their regularly scheduled attendance at Sunday Masses). That s all part-time! And I m not even sure that I ve listed everything she has overseen in this capacity. Many weeks, Kathy would be working in the office five days a week. That s decidedly not part-time! But Kathy is very dedicated to Sacred Heart and to the celebration of liturgy and is very generous with her time and energy, always willing to jump in and help even beyond her liturgical duties. At the end of the year, Kathy is leaving the position of liturgy coordinator in order to take up full-time duties as grandmother-in-chief. We are grateful that she will continue to assist Todd Gresick with school liturgies and as a choir member. We wish her all the best and thank her profusely for her efforts to make liturgy here as beautiful as it can be in praise of the God who gathers us as one. Reminder The Fourth Sunday of Advent (next weekend, December 24) is also Christmas Eve. Please check the bulletin, the Christmas mailing, and the parish e-blast for the schedule. Given that these two liturgical feasts are on the same day, the Sunday morning Masses for the Fourth Sunday of Advent are limited to one Mass at 9:00 a.m. Blessings to all as we enter this special time of the year recalling the nativity of the Lord! Tax Credit Scholarships You may have heard by now about the new tax credit scholarship program created through the Invest in Kids Act. This Christmas, you can give the gift of a Catholic education to children from low-income families while also receiving a tax credit yourself. This program is different from regular charitable giving to Sacred Heart or another charity. Visit archchicago.org/tcs to learn why and to access a step-bystep guide to the program. Thank you for all you do to support Catholic education. Tax Credit Scholarship Team tcs@archchicago.org

Hearts Alive in Worship: Liturgy and Prayer My only desire is to unite myself to God (St. Paul of the Cross) GAUDETE OR JOYFUL SUNDAY The third Sunday of Advent is known as Gaudete Sunday because in Latin, the first words of the opening antiphon (or scriptural passage which is often sung) for that day s Mass are "Gaudete in Domino semper" or "Rejoice in the Lord always". On this day, rose-colored vestments are worn by our presiders and the rose-colored candle is lit on the Advent wreath as a reminder that we are called to live joyful lives and to bring joy to others. Sacred Heart has many reasons to rejoice during this Advent season. The first reason that comes to mind is the joy that Sacred Heart will bring to many St. Columbanus families through the Christmas Sharing program TODAY. Over 150 Sacred Heart families participated in the program this year. Countless gifts were purchased, wrapped and boxed up for transport to St. Columbanus, where they ll be distributed to the 100 participating families at St. Columbanus this afternoon. You can see some of those gifts around the altar today. Additional donations from Sacred Heart parishioners were used to purchase Jewel gift cards for St. Columbanus families as well. These are families who struggle every day to make ends meet, and you have helped to make their Christmas dreams come true. Joy is present in the giving and the receiving. Let us rejoice in the Lord always. Another reason to rejoice is that our third grade Religious Education students will perform the annual Christmas Pageant today at 9:40am in the School Gym. Who cannot smile when you think about 3 rd grade angels, sheep, wisemen and shepherds? You are sure to see joy on those little faces and the faces of their parents! Let us rejoice in the Lord always. Sacred Heart can also rejoice thanks to the many Men/Dads of the parish who spent time this month with their kids collecting food outside of the Grand food that will be donated to the St. Columbanus Food Pantry, which serves nearly 500 people every week. Let us rejoice in the Lord always. More reasons to be joyful: Our Advent by Candlelight speakers were truly inspirational this year as they shared their stories of faith and service....our choirs are rehearsing the beautiful music they ll share with us at Christmas.... Sacred Heart School students are preparing for their annual Carols & Candles performance on Thursday, December 21st.... Our Priests wear rose-colored vestments today!... Parishioners are preparing meals for the Just Harvest Community Kitchen... The Prayer Group continues to pray for the intentions of those in need of prayer... Sacred Heart Parishioners will work side by side with St. Columbanus parishioners at the Food Pantry this coming Wednesday... Our Lectors are reviewing the scripture passages they ll share with us at Christmas... Finally and most importantly, during these last days of Advent, let us remember that Jesus is coming! Let us rejoice in the Lord always. We are so blessed. Celebrate Gaudete Sunday at your house. Count your blessings and reflect on the joy in your life. Let us rejoice in the Lord always! RESPECT LIFE PRAYER That world and local leaders may seek the values of heaven rather than the values of the world, We pray to the Lord! WEEKLY SCRIPTURE GROUP Given the approaching holiday celebrations and the hours of the parish office, our weekly Scripture Reflection Group is on hiatus until Monday, January 8th. We wish all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! We ll see you January 8th after the 8:30am Mass in the Parish Office Fireplace Room. All are welcome and encouraged to join. No experience in scripture is necessary! STEWARDSHIP IN SCRIPTURE: FOOD FOR THOUGHT Rejoice always, pray constantly, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you 1 THESSALONIANS 5:16-18 This scripture reading sums up Stewardship. Rejoice always means place your trust in God; He will provide all that you need. Pray constantly means prayer should be a running conversation with God throughout the whole day, every day. Give thanks in all circumstances means even in bad situations, thank God. Suffering a little bit helps build empathy for others in similar situations.

Hearts Alive in Worship: Liturgy and Prayer My only desire is to unite myself to God (St. Paul of the Cross) WE NEED HELP WITH JEWEL FOOD CARD DONATIONS! We re reaching out to you because we are a little short this year in our collections for the Jewel Foods gift cards for St. Columbanus families. We want to be able to give each of the families a little something extra to make their Christmas dinner special. Every St. Columbanus family that filled out an adoption form also receives a number of Jewel Foods gift cards, relative to the number of people in their family. (For example, a family of two might receive one gift card, and a family of 9 might receive 4 or 5 gift cards. Each gift card is worth $25.) In years past, we have collected between $8,000 and $12,000. This year (as of December 12th), we are only at $5,350. Thus, we re reaching out to those parishioners who have not already participated in the Christmas Sharing program, hoping that you might be able to help. ADVENT FAMILY PRAYER Dear God, thank you for giving us these four weeks to prepare to celebrate the birth of your Son. We are so thankful for all people that help us along this path we re traveling to welcome Jesus. God, bless our family and prepare our home and hearts to welcome your Son, Jesus Christ, into the world. Amen. Do you have any questions? Need more information? Contact Judy Pyke at jpyke@shparish.com or Christmas Sharing with St. Columbanus! CAN YOU SHARE YOUR GIFT OF SERVICE AT THE FOOD PANTRY ON DECEMBER 20? St. Columbanus is in need of Volunteers for their Christmas Food Pantry Distribution scheduled for Wednesday, December 20th. We need people to pack the perishables/produce at 8am and then distribute it at 10am. They expect large crowds that day (6-700). If you re able to work one or both shifts, that would be terrific! Just let Judy Pyke know if you re able to help. You can leave a message for her at the Parish Office or jpyke@shparish.com. PAPAL TWEETS There is also hope for those who have done wrong. Jesus came for this: it is possible to be reconciled with God and begin a new life.

Hearts Connected for Community: Parish Life Love is the beauty of the soul (St. Augustine) Advent by Candlelight Thank Yous Once again, we extend our thanks to the Chairs of Advent by Candlelight, Cindy Leveille and Silvia Hernandez. They put so much effort into making this a memorable evening for the women of Sacred Heart, and they do it graciously. Thank you for all that you do! We also extend our thanks to our Master of Ceremonies for the evening, Lisa Centner and to our four amazing speakers: Patty Sanfilippo, Niki Campbell, Sue Lehocky and Carolyn Agnew. By sharing your stories, you made this evening so special for the women of our parish and gave us a beautiful start to the Advent season. THANK YOU!!

Hearts Connected for Community: Parish Life Love is the beauty of the soul (St. Augustine) Help Make Sacred Heart Beautiful for Christmas Volunteers Needed Friday, December 22 at 9:00 a.m. We need volunteers of all ages to help decorate the Church, Vestibule and Gathering Space for Christmas on Friday morning, December 22, immediately following the 8:30 Mass. Bring friends and family. Enjoy a hot beverage and Christmas cookies while we set up the Crèches (inside and outside), and arrange poinsettias, greens and trees. Help Water Trees and Plants Our beautiful live decorations will need watering and TLC until the liturgical end of the Christmas season. Sign up on the Volunteer Sheet that will be in the Gathering Space over the weekend, and in the Parish Office during the week. Donations Welcome If you would like to make a donation, go to Give Central, use the Christmas Flower envelope, pick up a Wish List in the Gathering Space over the weekend, or stop by the Parish Office during the week. For more information, contact Liturgy Coordinator Kathy Janega Keenan at kjanega@shparish.com, or at , Ext A note from Father Dean Sacred Heart parishioners, I want to thank all of you who expressed their prayers and concerns about my upcoming back surgery. I just wanted to include a short article in this bulletin in case you might have missed the article I wrote last week. I will be having surgery on my back this Thursday, December 21, at Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington. This surgery is to help the scoliosis I have between the L2 and L3 vertebrae. During the past year and a half I have been experiencing extreme pain in my back when I walk or I stand. Hopefully, this surgery will alleviate this pain. Dr. Jonathan Citow is my surgeon. He may be a neighbor of yours. I want to thank you for your continued prayers and support. Fr. Dean Semmer Altar Servers, Lectors, Eucharistic Ministers and Greeters Christmas Schedule The current list of liturgical ministers scheduled for Saturday, December 23 through Christmas morning appears at the end of this bulletin. There are some outstanding sub requests and a few vacant slots, but there are also some extras for some of the Masses. Please check to see if you re scheduled or if you can help fill in for someone who s unable to serve, and contact Liturgy Coordinator Kathy Janega Keenan at kjanega@shparish.com or (847) , Ext. 117, so we can make sure every Mass for the 4th Sunday of Advent, Christmas Eve and Christmas morning is covered. Current liturgical ministers can also fill swap requests directly on Sacred Heart s MSP web terminal.

Hearts Nurtured by Faith: Education If God can work through me, he can work through anyone (St. Francis of Assisi) LOOK WHAT S HAPPENING AT SACRED HEART SCHOOL! The second-grade class went to the Shedd Aquarium last Wednesday. The second graders are studying habitats in science class and just wrapped up their ocean habitat. They explored the Wild Reef and the Polar Play Zone where they saw sharks, stingrays, beluga whales, penguins, sea otters, dolphins and much more. They even touched starfish! The students participated in a Habitat Design Tech Trek Class, where the students used ipads to take pictures of different ocean animals in their habitats. They then studied a hermit crab and were asked to create a habitat for the crab using their tablet. The second graders finished off a great day with the Aquatic Show where our very own Faith Hamman and Brooke Mackey were asked to participate in the show. It was a fun and educational day! UPCOMING EVENTS There will be a Parent Association meeting on Tuesday, December 19 th at 8:30 a.m. in the Parish Center. Please come join in and find out what is happening at Sacred Heart School! Our Early Childhood, grades PS K, will have their Advent Prayer Service on Tuesday, December 19 th at 9:30 a.m. in the Parish Center. All parents are invited to come! Our beloved CANDLES AND CAROLS will be on Thursday, December 21 st at 6:30 p.m. in church. This is a very special annual event where our 8 th graders present the story of the birth of our Lord Jesus and the entire school presents Christmas carols. This is all done in a beautiful, warm Christmas setting lit only by candles. It is a wonderful way to celebrate the spirit of the Christmas season. Please come join us for this glorious night! 8 Hearts Nurtured by Faith: Education If God can work through me, he can work through anyone (St. Francis of Assisi) Fourth Grade Caroling Field Trip In early December, the 4th grade religious education classes visited the Warren Barr North Shore Rehabilitation/Nursing Facility in Highland Park. Our 4 th graders did a fantastic, upbeat forty-five minute performance of Christmas for the residents (many of whom were in wheelchairs). The residents favorites were Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and Jingle Bells, which were repeated twice and featured four or five 4 th graders ringing a long string of red sleigh bells. The children then handed out homemade ornaments, which brought smiles to everyone s faces. As the class was leaving, an elderly woman in a wheelchair waved a few of us over, pointed to one of the songs on the sing-a-long sheets the children had handed out, and surprised us by saying, Do you know that this song here, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, was written by my cousin? It was definitely an amazing way to cap off the festive morning in which our children brought joy, music, happiness and good seasonal cheer to the residents of Warren Barr. Thank you to our caroling leader, Joe Carey, his sons Joey and Nicholas, and to our 4 th Grade Catechists Joe McGowan, Charlotte McGowan, Fran O Connor and Kate Spilotro. Merry Christmas from your Religious Education staff!! We will see you on Sunday, January 21 st. Sue, Jeanne and Debbie
