This year, Sacred Heart nominated two couples for this award: Kathleen & Glen Clarke and Kathryn Grace & Brian Norton.

Both couples worked relessly and faithfully to achieve success in the campaign, which exceeded our goal, by personally mee ng with many parishioners and sharing their passion for Sacred Heart parish.

We are extremely proud of them and their wonderful example of stewardship and ac ve discipleship.

Pastors are invited to nominate a parishioner or parishioners they feel are deserving of this award. This year, Sacred Heart nominated two couples for this award: Kathleen & Glen Clarke and Kathryn Grace & Brian Norton. The Clarkes and Nortons recently co-chaired our very successful capital campaign, Legacy of the Heart. Both couples worked relessly and faithfully to achieve success in the campaign, which exceeded our goal, by personally mee ng with many parishioners and sharing their passion for Sacred Heart parish. All four individuals play an ac ve role in many areas of ministry here at Sacred Heart and have done so for numerous years. We are extremely proud of them and their wonderful example of stewardship and ac ve discipleship. Cardinal Cupich will confer the award to Kathleen, Glen, Kathryn and Brian at an Archdiocesan Awards ceremony at Holy Name Cathedral on Sunday, October 29. Congratula ons! Founders Day Mass Next Sunday Cardinal Cupich himself will be the main celebrant and homilist at our 10:30 Mass. As chief shepherd of this local church, the Archdiocese of Chicago, he comes to Sacred Heart to help us celebrate the 120 th anniversary of our founding as a parish. A recep on will be held in the parish center immediately a er Mass where you will be able to personally thank the Cardinal for joining us for this anniversary celebra on. Come to the 10:30 Mass and raise the roof in praise of God as we celebrate 120 years of praying, growing, sharing and belonging! His Eminence, Cardinal Blase J. We remember that all human beings are made in the image and likeness of God, and are precious in the sight of our Lord. Let us pray that we too, recognize the value of every human being, especially if they look different than we do; face challenges we don t always understand; live with different disabili es we don t always accommodate; live in fear of not fi ng in; are challenged because they can t see or hear as well as others; or simply don t feel included or welcomed. Help us to reach out to each other and to make everyone feel included and welcomed into our faith community, we pray to the Lord. Lord, hear our prayer! WEEKLY SCRIPTURE GROUP Note: The Group will NOT meet tomorrow, Columbus Day, October 9th, but PLEASE join us next week! Our scripture reflec on group meets Monday mornings a er the 8:30am Mass in the Fireplace Room. We gather to read and reflect on the coming Sunday readings. No experience in scripture necessary! All are welcome and encouraged to join. It s a great way to ponder the word of God during the week, and hear the perspec ve of other parishioners! JOIN US! EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP AT SACRED HEART Stewardship is opening our hearts, gi s, schedules and hands to others being available and willing to listen and give our me, our energy and our love to the people of God. Those we give to can be fellow parishioners, neighbors, friends, or anyone who might need our help. STATEMENT OF CARDINAL CUPICH ON THE LAS VEGAS TRAGEDY Once again we must reach out in shock and horror to comfort the vic ms of a mass shoo ng in our country. We offer our prayers and our deep sympathy to all those affected by this senseless act of violence. We are grateful to the first responders and others who aided the vic ms and helped moved people to safety. We reaffirm our commitment to nonviolence and to addressing the causes of such tragedies. At this me we come together in prayer and also in resolve to change a culture that has allowed such events to become commonplace. We must not become numb to these mass shoo ngs or to the deadly violence that occurs on our streets month in and month out. Let us join with all people of good will to work for increased access to mental health care and stronger, sensible gun control laws. And let us build a na on characterized by kindness, remarkable for its tolerance and defined by its reverence for human life. * * * Note that the U.S. Bishops Conference President, Cardinal DiNardo, also stated on October 2nd, that we need to pray and to take care of those who are suffering. In the end, the only response is to do good for no ma er what the darkness, it will never overcome the light. May the Lord of all gentleness surround all those who are suffering from this evil, and for those who have been killed we pray, eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them."

In conjunc on with this project, St. Columbanus hopes to build a ministry that will be of assistance to parishioners looking for employment. As a part of that endeavor, St. Columbanus also hopes to provide business a re for people looking for employment. Thus, we have offered to host a Business A re Clothing Drive for St. Columbanus. We hope you have all "penciled in" our Family Movie Night coming up this October 13th. We wanted to pass along some addi onal informa on. First, we are thrilled to have Grill Chasers on site to offer some fabulous food items for adults and children. Adult op ons include Ro Prata Flatbread wraps with grilled chicken, pulled pork or veggies and your choice of a huge selec on of fresh, delicious toppings with fresh cut fries. For the kiddos, there will be hot dogs, mac & cheese or grilled chicken fingers with fresh cut fries. Top it all off with a scrump ous cupcake from Ms. Ti le's Cupcakes, also on site for the event! Wine, beer, snacks and other treats also available for purchase. Our Silent Auc on is up and ready to go - take a look and get your bid in - OR if you just can't risk loosing out on something, click on the "Buy it Now" op on and make it yours! The Silent Auc on will be live and in-person in the gathering space a er all masses on Sunday, October 8th if you would like to bid in person. The Silent Auc on will end at Movie Night at 8pm Friday, October 13th! h ps:// Boss Baby Finally, due to a delayed release date, we will be unable to feature "Despicable Me 3" as our movie. Instead we will be showing "Boss Baby". Come and join us for a super fun evening with friends. It will be a great night for the kids - parents, grandparents or babysi ers - bring the kids over and enjoy the night! All children must be accompanied by an adult. We hope to see you there! Open to Sacred Heart and other North Shore parishes is our new Teen Group! We are hos ng it here at Ss. Faith, Hope, and Charity. Our group meets a er our 5pm mass in our new building, so from about 6-7pm (or however long people wish to stay). As we are star ng this brand-new ministry, things are s ll on a small scale. We hope by successfully doing small things together we can grow over me. As an example, we have a few fun things planned in the coming weeks: On October 15th we are having a Game Night, where we will have an open gym, food, and our building available for those who wish to hang out. Our TV s are internet capable and can hook up a PS4 or Xbox One (etc.) to be played together. If you are interested in this, please feel to come. Please invite friends and RSVP by October 13th so we know how much food to order. We are also doing a service project for relief of those who con nue to suffer the a ereffects of Hurricane Irma in northern Florida. We are collec ng items for hygiene kits, a direct request of parishes and Catholic Chari es in the St. Augus ne Diocese. If you are interested in pu ng together these easy-to-assemble kits, please stop by our church and take some supplies, bringing the completed kits back. We know things are busy with college applica ons, sports, and tes ng. If we can t always do a project together as one, we can s ll work as one on our own schedules. Please contact Fr. Students, parents, staff and friends all helped to not only achieve but surpass our goal! A big THANK YOU to all who par cipated! We have a new Parents and Tots class! This class is open to children ages 3 months to 3 years old and their parents. It will be led by Laura We ersten, Sacred Heart School s Early Childhood Coordinator and kindergarten teacher. Come spend me with your child and get to know some other parents. Classes began on Wednesday, October 4 th and will be held the first and third Wednesday of each month from 9:15-10:15 a.m. in Room 101 of Sacred Heart School. Please check in at the office when you arrive. Bring a friend this is open to all parents and tots! UPCOMING EVENTS It s Fire Preven on Week! Children s Liturgy at Sacred Heart What is it? Children s Liturgy is actually the Liturgy of the Word for children. The Sunday scripture readings are proclaimed and explained on a level the children can understand and enjoy. Children s Liturgy takes place at our 10:30 am Sunday Mass from September through May (see schedule below). Any child in pre-kindergarten through 3 rd grade is encouraged to join us. Parents are also welcome especially if your child is a li le nervous with new experiences. No registra on is necessary. What exactly do they do? Right a er the opening prayer, the celebrant will invite the children to come forward for a blessing and the adult leader will lead them to the fireplace room in the parish office. A er a brief welcome, they listen to the First Reading proclaimed from the Children s Lec onary. Next, the Gospel is proclaimed by one of the adult leaders. An age-appropriate reflec on on the Word is shared by the leader through stories, discussions, or pictures - whatever the leader finds most appropriate to conveying the meaning of the scriptures. The children are then invited to share their own thoughts and ideas. The children return to the church a er the Prayers of the Faithful to celebrate the Liturgy of the Eucharist with the en re community.
