KATERI TEKAKWITHA THE FIRST NATIVE AMERICAN WOMAN SAINT Kateri was born in 1656 in a Mohawk village in upstate New York. When she was 4 years old her parents and brother died of smallpox. Kateri survived the disease, but it left her face badly scarred and her eyesight impaired. Because of her poor vision, Kateri was named "Tekakwitha", which means "she who bumps into things". Kateri was taken in by her uncle who was bitterly opposed to Christianity. When Kateri was 18 years of age, she began instructions in the Catholic Faith in secret. Her uncle finally relented and gave his consent for Kateri to become a Christian, provided she did not try to leave the Indian village. Kateri was ridiculed and scorned by villagers for joining the Catholic Church. She was subjected to unfair accusations and her life was threatened. Nearly two years after her baptism, she escaped to the Mission of St. Francis Xavier, a settlement of Christian Natives in Canada. Here she was known for her gentleness, kindness, and good humor. On Christmas Day 1677, Kateri made her first holy communion. During her time in Canada, Kateri taught prayers to children and worked with the elderly and sick. She would often go to Mass both at dawn and sunset. She was known for her great devotion to the Blessed Sacrament and to the Cross of Jesus. During the last years of her life, Kateri endured great suffering from a serious illness. She died on April 17th, 1680, shortly before her 24th birthday. Tradition holds that Kateri's final words were..."jesus, I love you", after which she embraced her creator for all eternity. Witnesses reported that within a few minutes of her death, the pock marks from smallpox completely vanished and her face shone with radiant loveliness. Before her death, Kateri promised her friends that she would continue to love and pray for them in heaven. Both Native Americans and settlers immediately began praying for her heavenly intercession. Several people, including a priest who attended Kateri during her last illness, reported that Kateri had appeared to them and many healing miracles were attributed to her.

4 HEART TO HEART pastor to parish I ve been through the Parish Transformation process once before although the Archdiocese keeps tweaking the process. And while I ve not experienced the To Teach Who Christ Is campaign, I ve previously gone through three parish capital campaigns in two different parishes. Special Meeting Next week I will be attending a special meeting on Tuesday for pastors whose parishes will be entering the Parish Transformation process. Our parish will kick off the process on September 19. What is Parish Transformation? It is a strategic planning process specially designed for Catholic parishes. The manual that guides the process is written by Fr. Ron Lewinski, a priest of the Archdiocese. A Beautiful Future This is a great parish with a tremendous outreach. Sacred Heart is very mission-driven. Through the Parish Transformation process, and whatever capital campaign we mount following that strategic planning, we can only get better and better, more effective and more exciting! Using the manual and guided by a facilitator provided by the Archdiocese, the team will review current parish life and envision how the parish community might choose to define itself in the future. Through this review and envisioning process, the team will identify concrete goals for the parish to achieve over the next handful of years. This will be useful in that our parish is also scheduled in 2016 to enter the To Teach Who Christ Is campaign to support Catholic schools. Many parishes, in conjunction with the campaign also raise funds for necessary capital projects within the parish. Both Parish Transformation and To Teach Who Christ Is have been mandated by the Archdiocese. We were given a year from the start of my pastorate to enter the Transformation process and more than a year before we entered the Teach campaign, time so that I could settle in and get a good sense of the parish as well as the parish getting a sense of who I am as pastor.

The reflection group will meet for 1 hour. Breaking open the Word parallels the Breaking of the Bread for just as we are nourished by the Bread of Life, so too are we nourished by the Word of God. We break bread, eat, digest and become bread for others. We also break open the Word, digest it, and become the living Word for others. Join us! All are welcome. NOTE: our group will NOT meet July 20th, August 3rd or August 10th. Regular sessions will resume on Monday, August 17th. Baptism By Appointment We celebrate Baptisms on Sundays following the 10:30 Mass. Was baptized Catholic as a child, but has not celebrated the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist? We offer an opportunity to come together in a small group to learn more about our faith. Sessions focus on the teachings and experience of Church via the Scriptures and prepare individuals to celebrate the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist during the Easter season. This process is commonly known as the RCIA or the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. You are welcome to participate in the process with your questions, your insights and your faith story in a warm accepting setting. Office to volunteer. If you like children and get along well with them and want to share your faith with them, this ministry might be for you. Classes are Sunday mornings 9:00-10:15. Room parents are needed for each class. Please volunteer on your registration form or call if you've already registered. Our religious education program uses committees comprised of room parents for various activities. For example, the reception after the Christmas pageant, reception after Confirmation, reconciliation reception, etc. Two room parents are needed for each room. SPARKED HEARTS KAIROS applications are out! North Side Kairos is July at Bellarmine Retreat Center. SUMMER SERVICE TRIP will be to McAllen, TX July 26 Aug. 1, where we will work with Habitat for Humanity and Sacred Heart Humanitarian Respite Center. See the website for more information. This community is incredible and I am amazed at your response to our plea to help eliminate our projected yearend operating deficit of $200,000. We are in the process of closing our books for the fiscal year ended June 30, and can t yet report where we will end the year, but I can say that, as a community, we achieved something great together! Once again, thank you for your generosity! Parish Office NEW SUMMER HOURS Please note that effective immediately through August 21, the parish office will be open Monday Thursday 8:30 am 4:30 pm.
