2 TEACHABLE MOMENTS In today s Gospel, we hear a very dramatic story. You have to admire Jesus crafty ability to turn the tables on the Pharisee, rivaling any sitcom writer. Imagine the scene: a dinner party interrupted by a woman who comes in and starts crying so hard she can bathe Jesus feet with her tears. She wipes his feet with her hair and anoints them. This incredibly powerful and intimate gesture is met with the unimaginably cold reaction of the Pharisee who is supposed to understand God. I do not know how Jesus could have held in his anger and turned the entire experience into a teachable moment; I think I would have been speechless with rage and disgust. Instead, he tells a story and ends with, So I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven because she has shown great love. But the one to whom little is forgiven, loves little. Your sins are forgiven. (this is when I imagine Jesus friends whispering you just got served! and aww snap! to each other). As Jesus teaches us in that quote, forgiveness and love go hand in hand. You cannot love someone you have not forgiven; you cannot ask for forgiveness without love. In my years of working with teens and young adults, I have seen time and again forgiveness as one of the largest conduits to God s love. You can say a million times Jesus loves you, but the real truth hits when a person sincerely feels forgiven. That is why we have ritualized the healing sacrament of Reconciliation and why forgiveness is a huge part of many retreats (including Kairos, coming up August 9-12, register now!). I know most of the mistakes I have made in my life have come from a lack of love either for myself or for the people around me. For me, the place I always have to come back to is the place of God s love so that I can love others. It s not enough just to talk about these things, we have to practice them. Sometimes we need little experiences to help, like running passing drills at basketball practice. Hopefully, you have had some of those teachable moments in little ways in your everyday life, or official ways like teambuilding exercises at a retreat. That is one of the things that youth ministry does; it offers young people teachable moments. The following is an exercise I might use at a youth group meeting. Try it out for yourself! Use it with your family, friends, or on your own. There is no limit to the people you can include. If you decide to do it by yourself, journal your responses or say them out loud. Pick a card game. It could be any that you like to play: solitaire, poker, hearts, war, whatever you want. Add an extra action to laying down a card: If CLUBS, share a favorite memory If HEARTS, share something you love about yourself/your life If SPADES, share something you would like to change about yourself/your life If DIAMONDS, share a hope you have for your future Sounds simple, right? This sort of sharing can bond, surprise, and facilitate love. Challenge yourself to give a loving reaction to each response. (Including your own responses!) You may end up putting the cards down and just telling stories, or having the most ridiculous conversation ever. Create your own rules and adapt to your situation, just don t forget to have fun! Jesus was at a party in today s Gospel, after all. ~ Carol Nowatzke Youth Minister

7 New School Building Dedicated in Sassier On Thursday, May 9, the 18 classroom Michael Heiming School was dedicated by Bishop Gontrand Decoste of Jeremie, Fr. Edner Mars, pastor of St. Jean Baptiste Parish, and Barbara Becker, President of the Association for Schools in Hispaniola. Michael Heiming was co-founder, along with Barbara Becker of the Association in 2000, but died in April 2012, before the school was completed. Parents, students and community members spoke of their gratitude for the funding provided by the Association and their pride in the part played by the community in the development, construction and completion of the school. Teens from Sacred Heart Parish also played a role, working with Teens from Sassier to paint the walls and ceilings of the classrooms and galleries. Despite the rain, everyone enjoyed the Dedication in Sassier! Every school day, teachers at Michael Heiming School welcome more than 500 preschool and primary school (Grades 1 to 6) students. The school is wired for electricity and has running water, flush toilets and a hand washing station to prevent the spread of water borne illnesses, which are the largest killers of children in Haiti. The School has 50,000 gallons of underground water storage, which ensures that they will always have water, even during dry periods. The next priorities for the School are establishing the library; having age appropriate furniture and equipment for the preschool classes; and installing a solar electricity system. A plan for the solar electric system has been developed and we will be seeking funding in the coming months. Including College Pierre Toussaint, Sassier s secondary school (7 th to 13 th Grades), almost 900 students attend school at the Parish schools in Sassier. Ten years ago, the Parish school met in the Church and had only 200 students from Kindergarten to 4 th Grade. God had brought great things to us!
8 SCHOOL NEWS! We are officially on Summer Vacation! The school office, will however, be open abbreviated hours. During the month of June, please give us a call, we ll be there from 9-noon. During the month of July, the office is closed, but please Annie, she ll be checking if you have any questionsadanstrom@shwschool.org. The office reopens in August. Don t forget Vision, Medical and Dental Forms for next year! For next year, all incoming JK, K and 6th graders, as well as any students participating in sports through SHAC will need a current Illinois state medical form by the first day of school. All Kindergarteners, 2nd Graders and 6th graders need a new Dental form as well. And new last year, all new students to Sacred Heart as well as all the Kindergarteners need a Vision form by Oct.15th. If you need any of these forms, please let me know, I am more than happy to send one home with your child, or an electronic version, though all dentist and pediatricians should have these forms available, and they are on our website as well. We can accept them anytime, so don t delay and get them to us as soon as you have them. The school calendar is now posted on our website under the calendar page. You can download it to your computer and subscribe to it. That way any updates will be automatically sent to you. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS Registration for NEW and RETURNING families is now taking place for the school year. To register online, go to the parish website and follow the leads for the religious education registration. Classes take place on Sunday mornings 9:00-10:15 AM for P/K-Grade 8 and Sunday afternoons 5:30-6:45 for Grades 5-8. We particularly need students for the afternoon classes. Catechists are also needed for many of the grades. Please consider volunteering for this ministry and call Sr. Luanne at the Religious Education Office to talk further. There are presently 55 catechists teaching in our program but each year some leave and need to be replaced. Ordinarily there are two catechists in each classroom of students. There will be a SPRED info meeting on Friday, June 28, 10:00-11:30. SPRED is religious education for those with special needs and we are presently exploring the possibility of how to meet these needs in our parish/cluster. Call Sr. Luanne for more info or if you re interested in attending. INTERESTED? Are you or someone you know interested in becoming a Catholic? Or even just exploring the possibility? Or were you baptized Catholic but not catechized? Sessions for inquirers begin late summer in a process called RCIA, the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. Call the Religious Education Office for more info at
9 Annual Catholic Appeal 2013 Love Never Fails! 1 Cor 13:8 Please spend some time this week reflecting on the Annual Catholic Appeal. Please remember that the Annual Catholic Appeal campaign is much different than a one-time special collection. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a gift payable in installments. As you review the work enabled by your contribution to the Annual Catholic Appeal, please reflect on God s gifts to you. He has given you all that you have. Your gifts to our parish, to the Archdiocese and to the work of the Church throughout the world are given in gratitude for the continuing gifts that God gives you. Sometimes it is difficult to envision how one pledge can help an organization the size of our Archdiocese, how it can make a real difference. But each pledge does make a difference because all parishes participate in the campaign and the gifts of many enable our Archdiocese to deliver needed ministries and services. Our combined gifts not only signify our gratitude to God, they fund a significant portion of the work of our Archdiocese. After our parish goal of $67, is reached in cash, 100% of the additional funds come back to our parish to help to fund our needs. Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response. Volunteers Needed ASAP! We need two volunteers to chair the Kids Game Committee for Oktoberfest! We are also looking for volunteers in many different areas. Please contact Lynn Hanley at lhanley@gmail.com or
