2 WHAT IS ROLE OF THE CONFESSOR? The Bible says, whose sins you shall forgive, they are forgiven and whose sins you shall retain, they are retained (Jn 20: 23). These words from John s Gospel truly mean a lot to me as a confessor. They remind me that as a confessor, I am a minister of something that is not of my own making. I am a mere tool that God uses through the Holy Spirit to bring pardon and forgiveness to his people. Therefore, when I am administering the Sacrament of Reconciliation, it is really Christ ministering to his people; hence, I am only God s vessel standing between God and his people. I, too, am in need of God s pardon like anybody else. At the same time, these words from John s gospel challenge me as a confessor: Do I believe in what they are saying? What do they mean to me personally and in my life? Do I have faith and do I trust in the power of God? As a confessor, the Sacrament of Reconciliation is very important in my life, and in yours. It gives me an opportunity to face myself and ask for God s pardon and mercy. As a confessor, I call to God to intercede for all, through prayer. Remember, we are human beings and none of us can say we have not sinned. I am reminded to live my life as an example to you, by receiving this sacrament more frequently. As a confessor, I am called to be a person of integrity, good morals and standing, and to truly live by example; meaning, my behavior, attitude and whole person should reflect who I am as a confessor. My public life should be in conformity with my inner life. In addition, I am called to serve with humility, kindness, faith and love, the way Christ himself would minister to his own people. Furthermore, I have been called to be a man of prayer and a good listener, while at the same time knowing my limitations and boundaries. As a confessor, I am not called to act as a judge; but a minister of kindness, hope and consolation to bring hope to God s people. I am also called to be a man of charity in both words and actions; exercising prudence and helping people in this sacrament to articulate what they want to say. I am bound by the seal of confession not to reveal to anyone what somebody has confessed to me. In addition, I am called to help those I am ministering to, to make a good confession and experience genuine sorrow for their sins. I am also called to help people heal from the wounds that have been caused by sin. Furthermore, I need to help people understand the mystery of sin, sin being a product of one s own freedom; a choice of evil instead of good and also to help them to understand the seriousness and the damage sin causes in one s life by darkening the conscience. Once the conscience is clouded, the sense of God is also obscured and the result is that the sense of sin is lost. My ministry reminds me, in the foremost, that reconciliation comes from God, through the Church, in the Sacrament of penance, and I am God s instrument. ~ Fr. Kisaka CHILDREN'S LITURGY OF THE WORD This ministry is a child-focused version of the Liturgy of the Word. The children actively participate in a version of the First and Second Reading as well as the Responsorial Psalm and the Gospel which are more appropriately geared toward their level of understanding. It takes place at the 10:30 mass in the Fireplace Room of the church. 4 NEWLY APPOINTED SACRED HEART SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS Congratulations and welcome to Sacred Heart's newly appointed School Board members: Kelly Lindstrom Craig Scalise Jon Skelly Kelly, Craig and Jon each officially join the board for three-year terms beginning with the June 11 School Board Meeting. (The three-year terms of Board Members Julie Crawford, Teresa Piotrowski and Gene Ullrich end at that time). Kelly, Craig and Jon's appointments to the board have been ratified by the school community. Please join Father Bob, Sister Kathleen and the Sacred Heart School Board in thanking Kelly, Craig and Jon for volunteering their service and welcoming them to their new roles. Read on below to see a brief summary of each of their backgrounds. Sincerely, The Sacred Heart School Board Kelly Lindstrom Kelly and her husband Tom have been Sacred Heart parishioners since Their four children: TJ, Clare, Kevin and Mary are in 6 th, 5 th, 3 rd and Kindergarten respectively. Kelly is an Adjunct Professor at the John Marshall Law School. Previously, Kelly was an attorney with the City of Chicago Law Department and has also served as a Cook County Public Defender. Kelly holds a BA from Indiana University and earned her JD from the John Marshall Law School. Kelly volunteers as a room parent and is active in various parish and school committees including Nite Lites legal counsel for three years. Kelly is also on the board of Maryville Crisis Nursery. Craig Scalise Craig and his wife Mary Michelle have been parishioners of Sacred Heart Parish for 15 years and part of Sacred Heart School for the past seven. Their two daughters, Mary Clare and Madeleine, currently attend Sacred Heart School and are in 6 th and 4 th grades. Craig is an economist for PricewaterhouseCoopers. Craig holds a BS in electrical engineering from UCLA, an MBA from the University of Chicago and a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Chicago. Craig participates in committees and events including the Viking Men s Club, Nite Lites and Junior Tower Players. He also volunteers as an AYSO/Sacred Heart assistant coach. Jonathan Skelly After relocating to the area from Florida, Jonathan and his wife Ashley have been Sacred Heart parishioners for two years. Their son Charles is currently in 1 st grade and their son Sam will enter JK in the fall. Jonathan is Vice President of Mergers & Acquisitions at W.W. Grainger, Inc. Jonathan holds a BS in Finance from the University of Florida and an MBA from Duke University. His volunteerism includes service with various school committees including Nite Lites and the New Family committee. Please remember that the Annual Catholic Appeal campaign is much different than a one-time special collection. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a gift payable in installments. As you review the work enabled by your contribution to the Annual Catholic Appeal, please reflect on God s gifts to you. He has given you all that you have. Your gifts to our parish, to the Archdiocese and to the work of the Church throughout the world are given in gratitude for the continuing gifts that God gives you. Sometimes it is difficult to envision how one pledge can help an organization the size of our Archdiocese, how it can make a real difference. But each pledge does make a difference because all parishes participate in the campaign and the gifts of many enable our Archdiocese to deliver needed ministries and services. Our combined gifts not only signify our gratitude to God, they fund a significant portion of the work of our Archdiocese. During the month of July, the office is closed, but please Annie, she ll be checking if you have any questionsadanstrom@shwschool.org. The office reopens in August. Vision, Medical and Dental Forms for next year! For next year, all incoming JK, K and 6th graders, as well as any students participating in sports through SHAC will need a current Illinois state medical form by the first day of school. All Kindergarteners, 2nd Graders and 6th graders need a new Dental form as well. And new last year, all new students to Sacred Heart as well as all the Kindergarteners need a Vision form by Oct.15th. If you need any of these forms, please let me know, I am more than happy to send one home with your child, or an electronic version, though all dentist and pediatricians should have these forms available, and they are on our website as well. We can accept them anytime, so don t delay and get them to us as soon as you have them. The school calendar is now posted on our website under the calendar page. You can download it to your computer and subscribe to it. That way any updates will be automatically sent to you. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS Registration for NEW and RETURNING families is now taking place for the school year. To register online, go to the parish website and follow the leads for the religious education registration. Classes take place on Sunday mornings 9:00-10:15 AM for P/K-Grade 8 and Sunday afternoons 5:30-6:45 for Grades 5-8. We particularly need students for the afternoon classes. Catechists are also needed for many of the grades. Please consider volunteering for this ministry and call Sr. Luanne at the Religious Education Office to talk further. There are presently 55 catechists teaching in our program but each year some leave and need to be replaced. Ordinarily there are two catechists in each classroom of students. There will be a SPRED info meeting on Friday, June 28, 10:00-11:30. SPRED is religious education for those with special needs and we are presently exploring the possibility of how to meet these needs in our parish/cluster.
