4 HEART TO HEART pastor to parish principal, Sr. Kathleen, continuing with our great teaching and administrative staff, and also continuing with our students, volunteers, and parents. Appeal and how you will support our new Archbishop in his leadership of the Archdiocese through a generous contribution. Thank you! The Place is Hopping Some wonderful things are happening around here this weekend. There s a pancake breakfast taking place in the school gym after the 10:30 a.m. Mass. I ve attended and/or walked through a whole lot of pancake breakfasts in my time. I can t wait to see what kind of turnout we get and who s there for this particular pancake breakfast. Mom always used to say that breakfast was the most important meal of the day. Apparently she was only part- Italian, because for us Italians all meals are the most important meal of the day! (Just kidding.) Breakfast is important because it s important to start the day off on the right foot (or stomach). This pancake breakfast is important because it s good food, good company and it helps lift our spirits in these winter days after Christmas. Thanks to all who will be cooking and helping with the breakfast, and thanks to all who attend. See you there! Catholic Schools Week This pancake breakfast coincides with the start of Catholic Schools Week, which begins today, Sunday, January 25. We applaud Catholic schools everywhere and, in particular, we applaud the fine work being done in our little school with the big heart. Heart is in evidence everywhere in our elementary school, starting with our In the end, it is precisely a matter of the heart. Sure, Catholic schools do fantastic work educating kids so that they are prepared for the next phase of their academic journey. But first and foremost, Catholic school are all about putting children and their families in touch (and in communion) with Jesus Christ. He s the reason for this school. And that s why it truly is a matter of the heart. Meet our new Archbishop Archbishop Cupich is celebrating a special welcome Mass in each of the six vicariates of the Archdiocese. The Mass for Vicariate II (our own) will be celebrated on February 12 at 7:00 p.m. at St. John Brebuf parish in Niles. Each parish will receive ten tickets to this event. Ticket holders will have special seating. I haven t received the ten tickets yet. You can also attend this event without a ticket which means you would be vying for a seat in an unreserved general seating area. Annual Appeal Just a heads up: the Annual Catholic Appeal begins the weekend of February 1 and continues for the two weekends after that. The Appeal is important in the life of the Archdiocese and it certainly reminds us that we are part of something bigger than ourselves as a parish. You ve been seeing some articles in the bulletin about the Appeal. Please pray about your financial commitment to the

5 Hearts Alive in Worship My only desire is to unite myself to God (St. Paul of the Cross) Pope Francis reminds us that we who are the Church, the Body of Christ, are entrusted with responsibility and must never forget the poor among us. May our support of the Annual Catholic Appeal provide us with a way to share the good news of Jesus Christ. We pray to the Lord. Be Part of the 2015 Annual Catholic Appeal Entrusted with Responsibility Many of you have responded to the Annual Catholic Appeal mailing from Archbishop Cupich. On behalf of those served by the ministries and services funded by the ACA, we thank you for your gifts. If you received the mailing and have not responded, please do so as soon as possible. In addition to providing for ministries and services throughout the Archdiocese, the Appeal also funds services that are of great help to ministries here in our parish. For example, Appeal funds support Catholic schools, religious education, ministerial formation, and initiatives for life, peace and justice. Through its support of Catholic Relief Services, the Appeal serves people worldwide, without regard for religious affiliation, whose lives are devastated by natural disasters, illnesses, wars and famines. This year, the theme of the Appeal is Entrusted with Responsibility. God provides each of us with many gifts. We have a responsibility not only to recognize these gifts but also to nurture them. As we contemplate His gifts to us, we should also reflect on our gratitude for these gifts. Your financial support for the work of our parish, our Archdiocese and the Church throughout the world is, in fact, one way to express this gratitude. Please give generously to the 2015 Annual Catholic Appeal. When our parish reaches its goal of $72, in paid pledges, 100% of the additional funds received will be returned to us for use in our parish. Seasonal Worship Booklets For those who might have missed the announcement at the beginning of Mass, we have started using seasonal worship booklets that are found in the pew racks. These booklets contain all of the music and prayer responses, and will help you participate fully in our celebrations. Keep in mind that songs will no longer be announced. The dates for each song appear at the top of the page for that particular day. This will permit the Mass to flow without interruption. Two important things to remember you will need to know the date, and you will need to keep flipping ahead in the booklet as the Mass progresses for the next prayer response or musical item. Missals are still available in the pew racks for those who wish to use them to follow the readings of the day. Baptism By Appointment We celebrate Baptisms on Sundays following the 10:30 Mass. Our Baptism Guidelines and Baptism Information Forms are available on our website For further information, please contact Trish O Toole in our Parish Office at Baptism Preparation 4th Sunday of the month 9:15-10:15 am in the Parish Office Conference Room. Sacrament of Matrimony Contact a priest or deacon 6 months prior to the anticipated date of marriage. Sacrament of Anointing Please call one of the priests at Sacrament of Reconciliation Saturday 9:00-9:30 am

7 Hearts Making a Difference The nation doesn t simply need what we have. It needs what we are. (St. Teresia Benedicta, Edith Stein) ST. COLUMBANUS FOOD PANTRY The St. Columbanus Food Pantry is always in need, especially during the winter months. The pantry serves between 400 and 500 families every week. How can you help? 1) Donate non-perishable food items or toiletries. Bring it to the Gathering Space any day. What do they need? Any canned food items, cereal, peanut butter & jelly, pasta, and toiletries. 2) Donate your time and energy by volunteering at the Food Pantry any Wednesday morning. Food is packed at 8:00am in the Rectory Garage, and distributed in the Courtyard at 10:00am. St. Columbanus can always use our help. If you have a free Wednesday morning, consider spending the time helping others! ST. COLUMBANUS CHRISTMAS SHARING THANK YOU NOTES Did you adopt a family from St. Columbanus during our Christmas Sharing program before Christmas? If so, we have an individual thank you note for you from the family you adopted. Please check the table in the back of Church to look for your thank you note! Poverty Awareness Month During these chilly winter months, families gather around dining room tables to share a warm meal and discuss on the days happenings. While this narrative plays out in most sitcoms we watch and books we read, is this the reality for everyone? Sadly, the answer is no. In the US, 1 in 7 households were food insecure last year. As the temperature continues to drop and Poverty Awareness Month comes to a close, let us reflect on our brothers and sisters in Christ living on or below the poverty line and how God is calling us to be the change in our communities. You can help empower low-income persons every month this year with the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD). To learn more about CCHD, meet the grantees, hear their stories, participate in CCHD Youth Art Contest and more, visit chicagopeaceandjustice.org/poverty. JOIN THE ELIZABETH MINISTRY Elizabeth Ministry is an outreach ministry to women in the parish at special times during motherhood. Its purpose is to affirm, support, encourage and assist women in response to their needs during the childbearing years. Elizabeth Ministry follows the example of the Scripture story of the Visitation by bringing together women who share a similar story. This ministry provides an opportunity for mutual support through the sharing of life experiences, prayer, celebrations of births or adoptions, support for those dealing with infertility, help in times of infant or child crisis, including the provision of meals during those times. If you d like to join or learn more about the Elizabeth Ministry, contact Kelly Lindstrom at kellindstrom@me.com or Kathy Adler at kathyadler13@gmail.com.

8 Hearts Making a Difference The nation doesn t simply need what we have. It needs what we are. (St. Teresia Benedicta, Edith Stein) This past Sunday Sacred Heart helped supply food and servers at the Just Harvest Soup Kitchen. A big thanks to the Hallermann, Forman, Seaman, Moag, LeVeille, Dwyer, Hines families and Jerry Sunko for supplying the food. Chris, Tracy and Matt Moag along with Teddy and Erin Hines were there to help serve. Thanks to all! RESPECT LIFE MINISTRY PRAYER Join our Respect Life Ministry in our weekly prayer for life: For all who teach the Gospel of Life, that they might be driven by love alone, We pray to the Lord!
