COLUMBANUS FOOD PANTRY The St. Columbanus Food Pantry is always in need, especially during the winter months. The pantry serves between 400 and 500 families every week. How can you help? Have your kids bring some canned food to Mass next Sunday as a Lenten remembrance of the poor! ELIZABETH MINISTRY ROSARY The Elizabeth Ministry will say the Rosary in the Chapel upstairs in the Parish offices once a month at 9am on the following Thursday mornings: March 19 April 16 May 14 June 4 The Rosary lasts minutes and is a lovely way to connect with other women/moms in the parish. RESPECT LIFE MINISTRY Join our Respect Life Ministry in our weekly prayer for life: For the poor, the homeless, and all who are in need: that they may receive love, respect, and the material assistance they need; We pray to the Lord. Donate your time and energy by volunteering at the Food Pantry any Wednesday morning. Food is packed at 8:00am in the Rectory Garage, and distributed in the Courtyard at 10am. OR gather a group of friends and go down some Saturday morning to pack non-perishable foods. Call Judy Pyke to coordinate. A GREAT LENTEN ACTIVITY! St. Columbanus can always use our help. If you have a free Wednesday morning, consider spending the time helping others!

4 HEART TO HEART pastor to parish to join with other Christian Catholics to celebrate the Paschal Triduum, the three most holy days in the entire liturgical calendar. The Holiest Week of All As you know, Palm Sunday of the Lord s Passion (celebrated this year on March 29) ushers in Holy Week. It s called holy because in that week we celebrate the Paschal mystery. In Holy Week we celebrate the core of our faith, our redemption in Christ won for us through his passion, death and resurrection. Our liturgical recalling of that singular saving event takes place over three days in Holy Week. A day in the liturgical calendar is figured from sundown to sundown. So the three days of the great Paschal or Easter Triduum are counted from the evening of Holy Thursday until the evening of Easter Sunday. One continuous liturgy is celebrated over those three days, beginning with the Holy Thursday Evening Mass of the Lord s Supper (7:00 p.m.), continuing in the Good Friday Solemn Celebration of the Passion of the Lord (3:00 p.m.), continuing on Holy Saturday in the Easter Vigil (8:00 p.m.), continuing in Masses on Easter Sunday morning (7:30, 9:00, 10:30 and 12:15 p.m.), and concluding with Evening Prayer on Easter Sunday (which we do not celebrate communally here at Sacred Heart; to my knowledge I don t think this happens in very many parishes thank goodness, we re all exhausted after the Triduum!). We will do our utmost, here at Sacred Heart, to make these celebrations solemn, joyful and engaging. A lot of detail comprises these liturgies, and I know that all those who are involved in preparing them will be up to the challenge. Each year the Paschal Triduum invites us to walk with Jesus, to enter deeply into the self-sacrificing love of Christ so that our own lives might conform more closely to his image and likeness. In the Paschal Triduum, we are given a living example of what it means to be a follower of Jesus. So please join with the entire parish community as we praise and worship the One who makes us who we are! Coming together on Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Vigil and Easter Sunday, may our hearts open to the Sacred Heart of Jesus! May we learn from him! May we emulate him! Monday, March 8 th marks our 3 rd week of Lent. An Evening of Prayer and Practice for our 8th grade students, parents and sponsors will be at 7:00pm in church. Tuesday we will have our Lenten Prayer Service in the school gym at 8:30am. The PTO Meeting will take place in the Parish Center immediately following the Prayer Service. The 8 th Grade Confirmation Mass with Bishop Rojas will be at 7:00pm, Tuesday evening. Wednesday, March 11 th the School Board will meet at 7:15pm in the school faculty room. We will have early dismissal on Thursday, March 12 th. JK 1:00pm and K-8 th 1:20pm. Friday, March 13 th is SPIRIT WEAR DAY! The Junior Kindergarteners will enjoy being with their moms on Moms & Muffins day at 9:00am. Please continue to bring in Box Tops for Education and Grand Receipts! You can drop off at our school office or our Gathering Space at church. We thank you so much for your support. Reregistration forms continue to be accepted in our school office. Thank you. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS Today's reconciliation service is in the gym for grades 3 & 4. 7th graders are attending 9:00 Mass in church this weekend. Today after classes is the gathering for those who wish to attend the Protecting God's Children program for grades 3, 4, & 5, students/parents. Next Sunday is for K - 2nd grade students/parents. You must Carol Nowatzke, our Youth Minister, to register before you attend. A letter detailing this program was sent to all SHRE families a few weeks ago. A number of classes will be praying the Stations of the Cross for their Lenten prayer experience during their sessions this morning. Bishop Alberto Rojas will be with us this Tuesday evening to celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation. Please keep these students in your prayers as they go forth to live their teen years with hopefully a greater awareness of their life in the Spirit. Hope to see you at the Parish Lenten Mission this evening at 5:30pm. SPARKED HEARTS BE A KAIROS LEADER If you have been on any Kairos retreat you are welcome to apply to be a leader on the next North Side Kairos Aug. 7-10! JOIN US FOR MASS & DINNER Our Lenten Mission begins today and continues the next two Sundays at the 4:30pm Mass. Three guest presiders - Fr. John Clemens, Fr. Pat McGrath, SJ and Fr. Michael Sparough, SJ respectively -will join us to celebrate Mass, and offer a special Lenten homily for us to delve deeper into the Word of God. Afterwards, they ll conduct a short discussion session on the homily in the Parish Center. There also will be discussion sessions for children of all ages on the lower level of the Parish Center, led by some of our Religious Ed Catechists. Finally, the evening will conclude with dinner for all this week it s Pizza! You ll be home by 7:00pm for your typical Sunday night rituals! Please join us and bring a friend! JESUIT DAILY LENTEN REFLECTIONS Fr. Glen Chun, SJ wanted to share a link to a Jesuit website, Igniting Our Values, which provides daily reflections for your Lenten journey. You can sign up for this Ignatian digital prayer experience by visiting: Jesuits.org/story?TN=PROJECT STATIONS OF THE CROSS The Stations of the Cross will be led every Friday morning after the 8:30am Mass, with the exception of the first Friday of March, when benediction will be held in the Church. The Stations will be led by various members of our Pastoral Staff. Please join us. LENTEN REGULATIONS Abstinence from meat is to be observed by all Catholics 14 years old and older on Ash Wednesday and on all the Fridays of Lent. Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday by all Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet 59. Those who are bound by this may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to one s needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. The special Paschal fast, as well as abstinence, are prescribed for Good Friday and encouraged for Holy Saturday.

The Fund enables our parish to assist members in need without causing them undue embarrassment. Many have been so grateful that they have later reimbursed the fund, although to do so is not required. As you know our parish supports many worthy outreaches; but this one is reserved for our own. Currently the Sarto Fund is somewhat depleted; we appreciate any financial support you can provide. Career Resources Of the many resources available for persons seeking employment, here are just a few that we thought might be of interest: Holy Cross in Deerfield and St Gregory Episcopal have a joint ministry called Career Renewal, which meets at Holy Cross every other month. Its website is: home.html Career Transitions Center, of which Old St Pat's is one of about 20 interdenominational sponsors, is a full time career counseling/skills assessment, etc. operations. Some of its services are free, but some require payment. Holy Name, Old St Pat's, OLPH, St Josaphat, Loyola U, DePaul U, and Kenilworth Union Church are among the sponsors. The center s website is: index.asp Career Resource Center (CRC), located in Lake Forest is a nonprofit employment resource. For 25 years, CRC has aided nearly 12,000 job candidates with an 80% success rate. We feature private coaching by industry professionals and a wide variety of education and training programs. Our services are individualized, results-focused, and affordable. Visit or call and ask us about coming in for a tour. Seasonal Worship Booklets For those who might have missed the announcement at the beginning of Mass, we have started using seasonal worship booklets that are found in the pew racks. These booklets contain all of the music and prayer responses, and will help you participate fully in our celebrations. Keep in mind that songs will no longer be announced. The dates for each song appear at the top of the page for that particular day. This will permit the Mass to flow without interruption. Two important things to remember you will need to know the date, and you will need to keep flipping ahead in the booklet as the Mass progresses for the next prayer response or musical item. Missals are still available in the pew racks for those who wish to use them to follow the readings of the day. Baptism By Appointment We celebrate Baptisms on Sundays following the 10:30 Mass.
