2 HEART TO HEART pastor to parish Mission Appeal Weekend I wrote about this in the July 20 bulletin. A reminder, however, is in order. This Saturday and Sunday our parish is hosting Father Raymond Aina, MSP, who will preach at all the Masses on behalf of his congregation s missionary efforts. As the initials after his name indicates, Father Raymond belongs to the Missionary Society of Saint Paul. What is this group? It is a clerical society whose priest members are incorporated into it by a permanent oath, dedicated to the society s missionary apostolate. The oath obliges them to observe the evangelical counsels of chastity, poverty and obedience in imitation of Christ. The members live as a community of priests in the Church and carry out in a special way the mandate and commitment of the Catholic Church as missionaries. The motto of the Society is: Pro Christo Legatione Ergo Fungimur, which is taken from 2 Corinthians 5:20 ( therefore we are ambassadors for Christ ). Please be as generous as possible in response to Father Raymond s appeal this weekend. Thank you for your support of the Church s missionary efforts. Our Own Missionaries Fifteen young men and women have been laboring in the Lord s vineyard for the past week, specifically in Red Lake, Minnesota. Along with three adult chaperones, they are on mission. Originally scheduled to journey to Haiti, that particular mission had to be postponed due to an outbreak of a viral epidemic. They chose Red Lake as an alternative site for their efforts. As I understand it, they will be working mostly with grade school kids, tutoring them and doing some Bible Study and leading them in prayer. Those of you who work with young children know just how exhausting and exhilarating they can be. So even though on this trip our youth missionaries won t be repairing homes or doing physical labor (like so many other youth-oriented mission trips), they will still be working very hard. Keep them in your prayers as they engage in this very necessary work for the Lord. Pray also for their safe return and that this week will have been for them a formative experience that draws them closer to Christ who motivates all our efforts on behalf of his kingdom. Did You Know? To celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Second Vatican Council s Decree on the Church s Missionary Activity, Ad Gentes, Pope Saint John Paul II wrote his eighth encyclical on December 7, It is entitled Redemptoris Missio, or The Mission of Christ the Redeemer. In it, he writes Newness of life in [Christ] is the "Good News" for men and women of every age: all are called to it and destined for it. Indeed, all people are searching for it, albeit at times in a confused way, and have a right to know the value of this gift and to approach it freely.... This is why the Church's mission derives not only from the Lord's mandate but also from the profound demands of God's life within us. Those who are incorporated in the Catholic Church ought to sense their privilege and for that very reason their greater obligation of bearing witness to the faith and to the Christian life as a service to their brothers and sisters and as a fitting response to God. 5 MISSIONARY COOPERATION PLAN APPEAL Our Church is missionary. From the beginning, she has obeyed the commission of Christ to go out and preach the Gospel to everyone in the world. Through the Missionary Cooperation Plan appeal, our diocese organizes support for the missions. This year the Missionary Society of St. Paul is assigned to our Church and mission appeal will be done on Sunday August 2 nd and 3 rd. The priest doing the appeal is Rev. Raymond Aina, MSP. The MSP needs funds for: 1) assisting in the care and rehabilitation of orphans and adults devastated by war and the AIDS pandemic in South Sudan and Malawi; 2) training of 100 seminarians, your future priests and 3) supporting priests in the founding/building of new churches. Your generous giving will ensure that the message of Christ s love reaches the poorest of the poor in the world. May God bless you! 7 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION-IMPORTANT NEW INFO Please register for the coming school year online at the parish website asap. All classes will be meeting on Sunday mornings 9:00-10:15 AM. The alternative evening date will not be offered since there is little interest. It is also important to remember that payment with credit card or check is due at time of registration. Payment plan or scholarship is also accepted after a call to Religious Education Office for an appointment. SPRED Special Religious Education for persons with Disabilities is a program we are attempting to begin here at Sacred Heart. It is important to observe this program in action before making a commitment. For further info please call the R.E. Office. We presently have one trained catechist but need more to become a SPRED site. CATECHIST NEEDED Do you love children and are good with them? Why not consider sharing your faith with them by being a catechist in our Religious Education program. Please call Sr. Luanne at to talk further about this wonderful ministry.
