2 Women & the Church The topic of women in the Church arose at the January Parish Pastoral Council meeting. The short discussion centered on the fact that some people have left the Church (not just Sacred Heart) because they believe the Church doesn t treat women well. I thought I would share my story of how I came to work for the Church to offer a different perspective on the subject. I am a cradle Catholic from a church-going family. I attended Catholic schools my entire life, including grad school & a stint at Loyola s Rome Center. I loved my faith, but I can t say I really lived my faith. Not until I met a man in the early 1990 s who had contracted the HIV Virus through a blood transfusion. He was dying of AIDS. His name was Norm. Norm had a profound effect on my life. He shared stories with me about his struggles and challenges, about how he & his wife were treated like pariahs, even by members of their evangelical church, because of his disease. Granted, it was a time when the world knew little about AIDS, but the stories of the cruelties he suffered broke my heart. Norm told me other stories about how God touched his life because of his disease. He found ways to bring God to others, and volunteered at his church whenever he could, even during his last days. He did everything with joy. I was so impressed with Norm s devout faith, that he inspired me to get involved at my parish. I called the pastor and volunteered in any way the parish needed help. Soon I became a sponsor for RCIA, the process by which adults become Catholic. I joined the choir, became a member of the Parish Council, and so on. The RCIA is what really inspired me. I was fascinated by what the Priests and the Catechists knew, and I wanted to know more. I did all this while working more than full-time at Leo Burnett Advertising. I travelled around the world, advising our international agencies on how to lobby their governments on anti-advertising legislation. It soon became apparent that my heart was more interested in the matters of God than the matters of advertising. I enrolled in a Master s program to learn more about our faith. I was hooked. God s voice became louder in my heart. I felt called by God to serve, to work for the Church and the people of God. I resigned from my job. (People thought I was crazy, but I knew God would take care of me.) I continued my studies fulltime, and worked in two different parishes to gain experience. I graduated from Catholic Theological Union (seminary) with a Masters in Divinity, and came to Sacred Heart shortly thereafter. I love the Church and have great respect for it. I am a Lay Ecclesial Minister. After receiving the appropriate formation and education, I have been authorized by the hierarchy of the Church to serve publicly in this Archdiocese, and to work in close & mutual collaboration with the bishops, priests, deacons, other lay ecclesial ministers & the lay faithful. I firmly believe women s roles in the Church will continue to grow. After all, my ministry did not exist when I was born. These recent quotes from Pope Francis also give me hope for the future of our Church. I, too, have recalled the indispensable role of the woman in society, in particular with her sensitivity and intuition for the other, the weak and the defenseless. I'm happy to see many women sharing certain pastoral responsibilities in accompanying persons, families and groups, and in theological reflection; and I've voiced hope that the spaces for a feminine presence that's more capillary and incisive in the church will be enlarged. (From a Papal address to a women s group in Rome on January 25, 2014; see the exhortation Evangelii Gaudium, 103.) "Women in the church are more important than bishops and priests," the Pope insisted. "That's what we have to try to explain better, because I believe we don't have a way of making that explicit theologically." (During his trip to Brazil in July, 2013) Per writer John Allen; Francis grasps that if its women were to walk away tomorrow, the Catholic Church would come grinding to a halt. He knows it's women who raise kids in the faith, women who make parishes run, women who keep alive popular devotions and practices, women who mobilize the church's human resources when people are in need, and on and on. (National Catholic Reporter January 31, 2014) I am an ordinary, faithful woman who works for the Church. I believe I can make a difference within the Church. I don t need to leave. I m proud of the feminine influence on the Church throughout our history, particularly through the saints, both ancient and modern. Even in scripture, there are numerous references in our wisdom literature of the Old Testament to the Spirit or Divine Wisdom as she and plenty of feminine qualities to describe her. This wisdom is Holy Wisdom, Hagia Sophia. Let us pray for the future of our Church, and that it continues to be guided by Sophia. That might be a good prayer as we begin the season of Lent. ~ Judy Pyke

VIRTUS TRAINING UPCOMING There is a Virtus training scheduled here at the Parish Center on Monday, March 3 from 5pm 8pm. Volunteers working with children who have not yet gone through this training should register online through the parish website. Registration is only online. Click on the Virtus tab on the home page of the parish website to navigate to the registration site. CELEBRATING THE SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION FOR RELIGIOUS EDUCATION The 8 th grade Religious Education morning and evening classes as well as the 6 th grade evening class, will celebrate the sacrament of Reconciliation in a prayer service on during class time. Morning 8 th grade students go directly to the school gym during class time. Evening students go directly to church for the sacrament after the 4:30 pm Mass 6 th GRADE RELIGIOUS EDUCATION MORNING CLASSES TO ATTEND MASS ON SUNDAY, MARCH 9 Please welcome the presence of our classes attending Sunday Mass at 9am.
