2 HEART TO HEART pastor to parish Sunday Liturgy at Sacred Heart: Part Two of a Continuing Series Starting Off on the Right Foot Sometimes it s in the details. I d like you to imagine for a moment the details surrounding the very start of Sunday Mass. If you recall, a hymn is sung and as it is being sung the procession with the liturgical ministers makes its way up the main aisle. Once they arrive at the foot of the sanctuary steps, the ministers step aside and stop, the cross bearer, other servers, lector and Eucharistic ministers splitting up, some on the right-hand side and some on the left. They wait at the foot of the steps until the priest bows. They bow with him in reverence to the altar and then they proceed into the sanctuary. In effect, the procession goes forward, stops, and then moves again. However, the entrance procession is meant to move, not move, stop, and move again. So here s what you will see starting the First Sunday of Advent: the cross bearer won t stop but will continue to move on up into the sanctuary and all the other liturgical ministers in the procession will continue on their own, either going into the sanctuary (the servers) or going to their places in the assembly (the lector and the Eucharistic ministers). So What? At this point, you may be thinking to yourself, Wow, this is a lot of nitpicking! What difference does it make? Remember, it s in the details. Liturgy is made up of many, many details and how those details play out impacts us as the celebration unfolds. Since the procession will continue to sweep on up into the sanctuary, a stronger dynamic will characterize the opening moments of the liturgy. Think of it this way, if we stopped the music and the hymn and waited for the presider to get to the foot of the steps, the liturgy would bog down. The only reason the current opening procession doesn t entirely bog down Did You Know? The Second Vatican Council teaches: The liturgy is the summit toward which the activity of the Church is directed; at the same time it is the fount from which all the Church s power flows. For the aim and object of apostolic works is that all who are made children of God by faith and baptism should come together to praise God in the midst of his Church, to take part in the sacrifice, and to eat the Lord s Supper (Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, Sacrosanctum Concilium, n 10). the liturgy is because the music and hymn-singing carries it in spite of the stopping. The combination of music and procession moving forward (with no stopping) emphasizes that we are all being drawn up into sacred time, God s time, God s place all of us gathered purposefully to praise and worship the One who makes us who we are. We leave our homes, individual pursuits, and ordinary clock time and enter the timelessness of the heavenly liturgy. And it is as if this dynamic is inexorable. No starting, stopping, and starting. One continuous movement forward by the grace of God. Places The other thing you ll notice on the First Sunday of Advent with the opening moments of the Mass is that the servers will be positioned on the far sides of the sanctuary, next to the east and west walls. The purpose of this repositioning is pragmatic more than anything else. The priest presider will have much better eye contact with the servers in case he needs to prompt them throughout the liturgy. In addition, the servers will not seem to be stuck in the back, by the baptismal font somewhat apart from the sacred action. In the future, the servers places may be modified further. But for that to happen, we need to see how the music ensemble fits in the space around the piano. Until we can make that determination, the servers places will be on the far east and west walls of the sanctuary. Next weekend s column will continue with enhancements to the Liturgy of the Word.

3 All Souls Day Remembering Our Beloved Deceased Saturday,, November 2nd On at 5:00 PM, we will remember the deceased members of Sacred Heart Parish, family members and friends at Mass. During this beautiful liturgy, the names of our beloved dead will be read aloud from the altar and family members will come forward to light a candle at the altar of remembrance. The names to be read are those who have been buried from Sacred Heart since last November and also those whose names have been mentioned in prayer at our Sunday Masses during that time. The list of those names follows. If your loved ones name has been omitted, please contact the Sacred Heart Office. 4 Patty Sanfilippo Receives Archdiocesan Christifideles Award Each year the Archdiocese of Chicago gives parishes an opportunity to recognize parishioners who have been extremely generous in their ministry and have helped build up their parish. This is called the Christifideles Award and it is given by the Cardinal and the Auxiliary Bishops at a special prayer service at Holy Name Cathedral. This Sunday (today), the Christifideles Award will be presented to Patty Sanfilippo at Holy Name Cathedral by Cardinal George. Patty is one of Sacred Heart s extraordinary parishioners because of her tireless and devoted witness to discipleship. Patty has volunteered for countless ministries at Sacred Heart, and currently spearheads our volunteer efforts at A Just Harvest Community Kitchen every month. She also serves as a Catechist for our Religious Education program, and has done so for many years. Patty also helps coordinate our Confirmation liturgy every year, serves as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, and serves on our Parish Pastoral Council. We are grateful to Patty for her service to Sacred Heart Parish, and congratulate her for an honor well deserved! We want to thank the following for serving and cooking tonight at A Just Harvest. A woman named Carla could not sleep one night. Restless, she opened her Bible and came upon these two greatest commandments. She realized, guiltily, how many things displaced God in her life. She hid behind baggy clothes and believed herself not good enough. Carla s parents had emphasized sin and a harshly judgmental God. Carla saw that the commandment was to love God, love neighbor, love self. The common thread was love, not sin, unworthiness, or judgment. Next morning Carla read the words again. Jesus said love your neighbor as yourself. Carla equated self-love with selfish pride. She had to understand love in a new way. So began a new path for Carla. At 1:40pm the Primary grades will head to the gym in their costumes for face painting, fortune telling and Halloween inspired games and treats. 8 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS Today our 6th graders are visiting Am Shalom in Glencoe. The 6th grade curriculum of the Hebrew Scriptures is enhanced by this tripto better under understand Jesus and our Jewish roots. At Easter time the class returns to Am Shalom to celebrate a Seder meal. 5th graders and their parents/families are at the 9:00 Eucharist today in church. Next Sunday the 6th grade classes will be at the 9:00 Mass. Thanks to all the students who submitted art for the Christmas art contest. Winners will be announced soon and their art work will be used as the front and back covers of the Sacred Heart parish Christmas bulletin that is mailed home to each Sacred Heart family. Have you given any thought to being a volunteer for SPRED, special religious education for person's with disabilities? It's a wonderful ministry and I encourage you to give it some consideration and go for the training. For more info call Sr. Luanne at Room Parents are still needed for a few of the rooms.
