4 HEART TO HEART pastor to parish Longest Nights Winter officially begins this Sunday. Just that word, winter, makes me shudder. I m not one of those people that take delight in snow, cold and sunless days. Yet this is the time of year when we get that fluffy white stuff coming down upon us and overcast days where it seems as if the sun has disappeared. It is also the time of year when the nights are the longest and daytime seems to flee. It s the time of the year when nights are longest and sunlight is more or less absent, that we celebrate the first coming of Christ in history, the Incarnation of our Lord and God in Jesus, born at Bethlehem. Night reigns at this time. But at this time when we most need it, the light of Christ shines in our hearts and minds. It is the light of heaven, the light of revelation, the light that guides us, the light that dispels darkness and shows us the way. It is a wonderful way, full of wonder, joy, gladness and spirit. This time of year, the world may be dark, but hope is bright. Sinners look for grace, and grace is found not so very far from our human condition: in Bethlehem of long ago, in every Bethlehem here and now where hearts are open in welcome to the Savior. Winter begins. Ah, but the grace of God which warms and revitalizes us is so much stronger than winter darkness. The ancient cry of the early Christian church in prayer, maranatha ( come, Lord Jesus, come ) is our own prayer this Fourth Sunday of Advent. Yes, Lord, you came long ago to this world. We await your Second Coming and in these winter days we cheer ourselves with the message of wonder, joy, gladness and spirit that mark your passage through this world and our hearts. Open Wide the Doors At the turn of the century, Pope Saint John Paul II invited the whole Church to open wide the doors to Christ. The doors to which he referred were metaphorical: The doors of our hearts, the doors of our lives. Those doors. This Christmas Eve and Day, Sacred Heart parish will open wide its actual and metaphysical doors. We welcome into our worship all those who come to adore the Christ child, long-time parishioners who pass through the doors each Sunday, new parishioners still getting settled, guests and family members of parishioners who are visiting for the holidays, parishioners who come here less frequently but who nonetheless are here now for Christmas. All are welcome. All are invited to share the wonder, joy, gladness and spirit that characterize the liturgy at this time of year. Did You Know? There is a special ritual to bless the doors of a church. The prayer to bless new church doors is as follows We praise you, Lord God, Father allholy. You sent your Son into our world to gather by the shedding of his blood those whom the destructive power of sin had scattered. You sent him to unite us all in one sheepfold. He is the Good Shepherd. He is the door through which those who follow him enter and are safe, go in and go out, and find pasture. Grant that those who enter this church with confident faith in him may persevere in the teaching of the apostles, in the breaking of bread, and in unceasing prayer, and so be built into the heavenly Jerusalem. Amen.

These booklets contain all of the music and prayer responses, and will help you participate fully in our celebrations. The purple booklets are for the Sundays of Advent, and gray ones are for the weekday School Masses. Keep in mind that songs will no longer be announced. The dates for each song appear at the top of the page for that particular day. This will permit the Mass to flow without interruption. Two important things to remember you will need to know the date, and you will need to keep flipping ahead in the booklet as the Mass progresses for the next prayer response or musical item. Missals are still available in the pew racks for those who wish to use them to follow the readings of the day.

8 Hearts Making a Difference The nation doesn t simply need what we have. It needs what we are. (St. Teresia Benedicta, Edith Stein) ST. COLUMBANUS FOOD PANTRY The St. Columbanus Food Pantry is always in need. It serves between 400 and 500 families every week. How can you help? 1) Donate non-perishable food items or toiletries. Bring it to the Gathering Space any day. 2) Donate your time and energy by volunteering at the Food Pantry any Wednesday morning. Food is packed at 7am in the Rectory Garage, and distributed in the Courtyard at 10am. Many of the Sacred Heart parishioners who volunteered the Wednesday before Thanksgiving shared they didn t realize the level of need; and that it was a humbling experience to help out. Others said they worked hard all morning and would do it again! St. Columbanus can always use our help. If you have a free Wednesday in the coming weeks, consider spending the morning helping others! ST. COLUMBANUS CHRISTMAS SHARING If you d still like to make a donation to St. Columbanus, you can! Just send a check made out to Sacred Heart (with Christmas Sharing noted on the memo line) to the Parish Office. Thank you for your generosity. RESPECT LIFE MINISTRY PRAYER Join our Respect Life Ministry in our weekly prayer for life: For all women preparing for birth and the tiny unborn children in their wombs, that God might teach us how to love, nurture and support them; We pray to the Lord! JOIN THE ELIZABETH MINISTRY Elizabeth Ministry is an outreach to women in the parish at special times of motherhood. Its purpose is to affirm, support, encourage and assist women in response to their needs during the childbearing years. Elizabeth Ministry follows the example of the Scripture story of the Visitation by bringing together women who share a similar story. This ministry provides an opportunity for mutual support through the sharing of life experiences, prayer, celebrations of births or adoptions, support for those dealing with infertility, help in times of infant or child crisis, including the provision of meals during those times. If you d like to join or learn more about the Elizabeth Ministry, contact Kelly Lindstrom at kellindstrom@me.com or Kathy Adler at kathyadler13@gmail.com.
