1 THE TOWER December 14, 2014 Third Sunday of Advent SACRED HEART PARISH CHRISTMAS SHARING WITH ST. COLUMBANUS All 120 St. Columbanus families were adopted (THANK YOU!), and now all the gifts and packages will be loaded onto the truck after the 10:30am Mass today and be on their way to 71st Street. Once there, they are unloaded into the pews of the Church. Each family checks in with the St. Columbanus Christmas Sharing coordinator so they can pick up their packages to take home.

4 HEART TO HEART pastor to parish Gifts If you attend the Saturday evening Mass at 5:00 p.m. or the Sunday morning Masses at 7:30, 9:00 or 10:30 a.m. this weekend you will notice a dramatic addition to our church worship space. Hundreds upon hundreds of the prepared gift boxes for our St. Columbanus sharing parish families are residing for a short period of time in our sanctuary and down the side aisle of the church. We haven t done it this way before. So why are we doing this now? This is a season to prepare for gift-giving at Christmas. We exchange gifts at Christmas in celebration of the greatest gift of all, the Incarnation God taking on human flesh and form to dwell among us and save us from the inside out, so to speak. That greatest gift of Christ s Incarnation and in-dwelling becomes really present to us in the Eucharist Sunday after Sunday. From the altar, we receive his Body and Blood, sharing in Communion. At each Mass we are privileged to gather around the Eucharistic table and from that altar table we go forth to become Christ s body in the world, witnessing to the Good News of salvation. The Eucharist is the divine gift that keeps on giving. This sacrament nourishes us and strengthens us so that we share with others who are less fortunate. Marshaling the gift boxes in church prior to their departure for St. Columbanus families is simply a way to remind us that Eucharist is the greatest gift and it is from that supreme gift that all our other gift-giving and sharing is given meaning as a witness to the Good News. Prayerful Awareness As you go about the rest of your day today, please remember that our eighth grade candidates for the sacrament of Confirmation are gathering on retreat from 12:00 Noon until after the 4:30 evening Mass today (this Sunday) to prepare for the reception of the sacrament. As they go through their retreat experience, say a prayer for them, commending them to the grace of the Lord Jesus who desires that we all become his witnesses in the world. That is the value of this particular sacrament and why the prayers and images surrounding Confirmation refer to the Holy Spirit. It is the Spirit that animates and propels us as witnesses to Christ. Here is one possible prayer text you might use in praying for our Confirmation candidates: O God, the young men and women preparing for Confirmation were claimed for Christ in Baptism. May the Spirit they received in the waters of Baptism be so strengthened in them that they come to their Confirmation ready and willing to be eager witnesses to the Lord Jesus eager to grow and mature, eager to live the faith they have been given as a gift, eager to make that faith their own and work together in the community of the Church on behalf of your kingdom of justice, peace, and light. Amen. Generous Outreach Each year for the five years, members of the men s club (and their sons and daughters) collect foodstuff and monetary donations for needy families of St. Columbanus parish. They re doing it again, in order to provide for Christmas meals, dispersed by the food pantry at our sharing parish. They ll be standing outside the Grand from 10:00 a.m. till 4:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. If you are shopping at the Grand, please consider helping out. Last year this effort fed approximately 500 families. Did You Know? The miter (tall pointed hat worn by a bishop during liturgy) is shaped that way to remind us of the Holy Spirit s descent upon the apostles at Pentecost in the form of tongues as of fire (see Acts 2:3).

These booklets contain all of the music and prayer responses, and will help you participate fully in our celebrations. The purple booklets are for the Sundays of Advent, and gray ones are for the weekday School Masses. Keep in mind that songs will no longer be announced. The dates for each song appear at the top of the page for that particular day. This will permit the Mass to flow without interruption. Two important things to remember you will need to know the date, and you will need to keep flipping ahead in the booklet as the Mass progresses for the next prayer response or musical item. Missals are still available in the pew racks for those who wish to use them to follow the readings of the day.

Christmas Break until classes resume Jan th Grade Field Trip While we haven't had time to talk to the students since they returned from their trip, the experience at Warren Barr Northshore (formerly Manor Care Home) in Highland Park was very enjoyable. Students sang Christmas carols, accompanied by Joe Carey on his guitar, and gave out homemade ornaments to the residents to decorate their rooms. For many students, this is their first time in a nursing facility and the residents love seeing so many smiling children. The time was brief and by dismissal, the bus had returned to Sacred Heart in time for the students to enjoy a treat from St. Nicholas, who had come to celebrate his feast. SPARKED HEARTS ONE VOICE - any high school singer or instrumentalist is welcome to join! Contact Carol for rehearsal times. We are particularly looking for instrumentalists right now. If you can t come regularly but would like to join us for Christmas Eve mass, contact us for rehearsal times! TEEN VIDEO CONTEST - It s time for this year s Archdiocesan video contest! 8 Hearts Making a Difference The nation doesn t simply need what we have. It needs what we are. (St. Teresia Benedicta, Edith Stein) ST. COLUMBANUS FOOD PANTRY The St. Columbanus Food Pantry is always in need. It serves between 400 and 500 families every week. How can you help? ST. COLUMBANUS CHRISTMAS SHARING If you d still like to make a donation to St. Columbanus, please take a Christmas Sharing envelope located in the back of Church and send a check made out to Sacred Heart (with Christmas Sharing noted on the memo line) to the Parish Office. Thank you for your generosity 1) Donate non-perishable food items or toiletries. Bring it to the Gathering Space any Sunday. 2) Donate your time and energy by volunteering at the Food Pantry any Wednesday morning. Food is packed at 7am in the Rectory Garage, and distributed in the Courtyard at 10am. Many of the Sacred Heart parishioners who volunteered the Wednesday before Thanksgiving shared they didn t realize the level of need; and that it was a humbling experience to help out. Others said they worked hard all morning and would do it again! St. Columbanus can always use our help. If you have a free Wednesday in the coming week, consider spending the morning helping others at the Food Pantry!.
