THE TOWER June 14, 2015 Eleventh Sunday In Ordinary Time SACRED HEART PARISH CELEBRATING THE FEAST OF THE SACRED HEART

Dear Sacred Heart Parishioners, It has been an honor and a privilege to come back home as Principal of SHS. You have enriched my life through your children and the opportunities and challenges they brought. As a community we surrounded these young people to help shape their faith, challenge their thinking and cultivate their curiosity---oh, the wonder of it all. Thank you for your trust and support. I have been truly blessed by Sacred Heart Parish. I WILL, I WILL, I WILL Such a lovely send-off last Sunday! Thank you for the beautiful liturgy, the wonderful music, your kind good wishes, and generous gifts. And thanks too for those who made it over to the reception to enjoy one another's company, the delicious food, and beautiful music. It's been a blessed seven years at Sacred Heart and I am full of gratitude. Now I will, I will, I will, enjoy, enjoy, enjoy my retirement. Sr. Luanne My prayers are with you! Fondly, Sr. Kathleen Donnelly, OP

Hearts Contemplating Christ FEAST OF THE SACRED HEART On Friday, June 12th, the Church celebrates the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Devotion to the Sacred Heart celebrates Christ s redeeming and merciful love for the human race. This Devotion has a long and extensive history. Between 800 CE and 1,000 CE, Jesus heart was used as a symbol on which to focus one s devotion to his humanity and the wounds he suffered during crucifixion. Outward practices of the devotion were established over the centuries by various historical figures in the Church including St. Bonaventure, St. Gertrude, St. Catherine of Sienna, and St. Francis de Sales. St. John Eudes was responsible for the first liturgical office celebrated in honor of the Sacred Heart whose feast was observed for the first time on October 20th, The Devotion became even more popular when St. Margaret Mary Alacoque ( ), a Visitation nun, experienced a series of visions of Christ as she prayed before the Blessed Sacrament. During these visions, Christ pointed to His Heart, as the symbol of his love and mercy. Christ promised Margaret Mary that, in response to those who devoted themselves to His Sacred Heart, He would: establish peace in their homes; comfort them in times of trouble; bestow abundant blessings upon them; be an infinite ocean of mercy for sinners; and bless every place in which an image of His Heart was displayed and honored. The devotional practices include: 1) receiving Communion frequently; 2) going to Confession and receiving the Eucharist on the First Friday of the Month; 3) participating in Eucharistic Adoration; and 4) celebrating the Feast of the Sacred Heart. Finally, Pope Pius XII issued an encyclical in 1956 on the Sacred Heart, which can be found on the Vatican website under Pope Pius XII.

HEART TO HEART pastor to parish May the Sacred Heart of Jesus always be a font of grace for all our lives, communally and individually! Solemnity of the Sacred Heart The solemnity of the Sacred Heart is observed in the liturgical calendar on the Friday following the second Sunday after Pentecost, which this year places this special feast on June 12. Interestingly, the solemnity of the title of one s own parish church can take precedence over Sundays of Ordinary Time. In other words, since our parish is named after the Sacred Heart of Jesus, we can, with the Archbishop s permission, move the celebration of the Sacred Heart from June 12 to the nearest Ordinary Time Sunday, which would be this weekend, June 13/14. So, instead of celebrating the Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time, we will replace it with the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart. For that reason, the Scripture readings for this weekend are different, as are the prayers for the Mass. We are also observing this solemnity by praying the Litany of the Sacred Heart during the liturgy. I invite you to take the pamphlets that you find in the pews for this litany home with you. Perhaps before or after one of your weekend family meals you can pray this litany in honor of the Sacred Heart. In this way, your household can tie the liturgy celebrated in church with the prayer of your family at home. Additions to Staff Besides our new principal and DRE, which are full-time positions on staff, we are fortunate to be able to welcome to the Sacred Heart pastoral staff two wonderful individuals, Kathy Janega Keenan and Mindi Craddock. Let me explain how this has come about. After almost a year in the parish, I determined that we need a staff person who will coordinate liturgy someone other than clergy. Based on my experience working with her over the past months, especially with regard to Holy Week, Kathy will fill that role perfectly. I also believe that we desperately need someone to coordinate stewardship in the parish (the gospel imperative of stewardship includes development and marketing work). Having worked with Mindi on the School Board this past year, she will fit perfectly with our need for a stewardship coordinator. These newest members of staff will each do their work for a modest stipend. The parish will actually share Mindi s time and stipend with the school because she will also help to market our educational efforts. The Finance Council of the parish was consulted about these new hires. In light of our current financial situation, it seems best to fill these positions with persons who are willing to work for a stipend versus a salary. In the future, if our financial situation improves, so can their remuneration and the hours we require of them.

Hearts Alive in Worship My only desire is to unite myself to God (St. Paul of the Cross) SCRIPTURE REFLECTION GROUP MONDAYS 9AM Join Judy Pyke on Monday mornings at 9am (after the 8:30am Mass) in the Parish Office Fireplace Room to read and delve into the Scriptures for the coming Sunday. The reflection group will meet for 1 hour to break open the Word, so that participants can ponder the readings for the coming week. Breaking open the Word parallels the Breaking of the Bread for just as we are nourished by the Bread of Life, so too are we nourished by the Word of God. We break bread, eat, digest and become bread for others. We also break open the Word, digest it, and become the living Word for others. This practice of breaking open the Word helps us experience the deep conversion that comes only from an encounter with the living Word of God, and enables us to connect faith and life. Join us! All are welcome. Sessions will continue through the summer unless otherwise noted. FIRST COMMUNION CONGRATULATIONS Sacred Heart offers its congratulations and blessings upon 5 children that received their First Communion last Sunday. We welcome to the Table of the Lord (from left to right): Owen and Grace Walker, and Cecilia, Isabella and Sofia Troglia. May the Sacred Heart of Jesus strengthen your faith and increase your love as you continue to receive our Lord Jesus Christ.
