2 HEART TO HEART pastor to parish A Beautiful Visit Last week I spent a wonderful hour with Father Bob Ferrigan, who is retired and resides now at St. Benedict s home. Many of you know him well. Father was pastor of Sacred Heart parish from 1990 to He, along with Father Heidenreich, are our pastor emeriti. Of course, in preparing for this transition, I met with Father Heidenreich several times, as well as with the staff. What is a pastor? A pastor shepherds a parish under the authority of the diocesan bishop, in our case, under Cardinal George. In the role of shepherd, a pastor teaches, sanctifies, and governs. As a teacher, a pastor is obliged to see to it that the word of God in its entirety is announced in the parish, especially in the homily and in catechetics. He is to foster works by which the spirit of the gospel, including issues involving social justice, is promoted. He is to take special care for the Catholic education of children and youth. As a sanctifier, a pastor ensures that the Eucharist is the center of the parish assembly of the faithful. He is to see to the nourishment of the parish community through the celebration of the sacraments, and promote the frequent reception of both the Eucharist and the sacrament of Penance. A pastor promotes family prayer and their active participation in the Sunday liturgy. Those last three paragraphs are a summary of the pertinent material from the Code of Canon Law which describes the role of the pastor in a parish (canons ). I thought you might like to read this. I know it was good for me to review this section of the Code. It was even better to visit the living embodiment of what a pastor is, taking time with Fathers Ferrigan and Heidenreich, as I embark on this newest pastoral adventure. Hard to Describe Pastoring is something we will do together, for being pastor, obviously, implies a relationship. A shepherd shepherds the flock. It s an intricate dance propelled by the Spirit, nourished by the liturgy and the sacraments, occasionally bumpy (with perhaps some stepping on toes), but (I hope) more often than not, a smooth, exciting dance. Pastoring is a partnership. It is leading. It is serving. It is all of the above. And it is more. For it is Christcentered, and as such, it is a profound challenge and joy grounded in the Paschal mystery that makes us who we are. That s the heart of it, the Paschal mystery. That is the heart of this lovely parish, named for that very Heart. In leading, a pastor should strive to come to know the faithful who have been entrusted to his care. He visits families, sharing their joys, their cares and worries, strengthening them in the Lord. A pastor acknowledges and promotes the proper role which the lay members of the Christian faithful have in the Church s mission and outreach.

The Annual Catholic Appeal is a way to give to others and transform the world and so be God s presence. Our support for the Appeal funds: Catholic schools, parishes, religious education programs and ministry formation, initiatives to foster respect for life, as well as those that make the world more just, peaceful, and loving. Through its support of Catholic Relief Services, the Appeal serves people worldwide, without regard for religious affiliation, whose lives are devastated by natural disasters, illnesses, wars, and famines. Once the pledge payments have exceeded our goal, all of the additional funds are returned to Sacred Heart for use in our ministries. SPARKED HEARTS Kairos 15: THERE IS STILL TIME TO REGISTER! The next Kairos retreat will be August 8-11 at Bellarmine Jesuit Retreat Hall. This fantastic retreat is open to all incoming juniors, seniors, and college freshmen. Religious Education Important New Info Please register for the coming school year online at the parish website asap. All classes will be meeting on Sunday mornings 9:00-10:15 AM. The alternative evening date will not be offered since there is little interest. It is also important to remember that payment with credit card or check is due at time of registration. Payment plan or scholarship is also accepted after a call to Religious Education Office for an appointment. SPRED Special Religious Education for persons with Disabilities is a program we are attempting to begin here at Sacred Heart. It is important to observe this program in action before making a commitment. For further info please call the R.E. Office. We presently have one trained catechist but need more to become a SPRED site. Catechists Needed Do you love children and are good with them? Why not consider sharing your faith with them by being a catechist in our Religious Education program. Please call Sr. Luanne at to talk further about this wonderful ministry. Classes meet Sunday mornings 9:00-10:15 with about students and two catechists per class.
