New Church Entrance and more to Come Many of my German colleagues admire the involvement of our parishioners and their "ownership" of the ongoing life of our parishes.

First of all, they have a different parish structure: they have just a few areas for lay ministries and no lay ministries in Education or Outreach (these are done by organizations outside the parish).

2 New Church Entrance and more to Come Many of my German colleagues admire the involvement of our parishioners and their "ownership" of the ongoing life of our parishes. This involvement is not as common in many of their parishes for several reasons. First of all, they have a different parish structure: they have just a few areas for lay ministries and no lay ministries in Education or Outreach (these are done by organizations outside the parish). Another reason for this difference is the source of their parish funding: it is called the "Kirchensteurer (literally Church Tax )" which the people must pay as part of their annual income tax. The money then goes to each diocese in Germany, so there is no direct relationship between parishioners donations and their own parish. If, for example, a parish needs some major renovation or repair, they petition the diocese and their diocese gives them the funds from that part of the Kirchensteuer. However on the other side of the equation, our systems have problems too. Each parish needs to receive enough money from parishioners to be able to support all our ministries and to fund all the building up keep and maintenance. That s why our help to St. Columbanus is so important they could not continue to operate on their own. Today in the Archdiocese of Chicago, one of the biggest problems many parishes face is deteriorating buildings because they do not have the funds to do the necessary maintenance, and the Archdiocese does not have the funds to help them. In this regard, we at Sacred Heart are very fortunate to have very generous parishioners who notice our deferred maintenance items and give us extra funds to address them. In your name, I thank them for their awareness and generosity. For example, we recently have been the happy beneficiaries of some incredibly generous parishioners who noticed some of the not so pretty aspects of our beautiful church and stepped forward with anonymous donations to improve these situations! Hopefully you ve noticed the new bluestone at the front entrance to the church Next, after a lengthy process, we are awaiting the arrival of new front doors for the church. As you have probably noticed, our current doors don t do justice to the classic façade of our church. The new doors should be installed within the next few weeks, and you will also see that we are replacing the arches above the doors with clear glass to bring more light into the vestibule. We hope you ll be pleased. Finally, in the same way, a group of parishioners has been meeting for over two years with the purpose of considering the use and deferred maintenance of our whole campus and planning for it s future use of them. This group is developing a proposed new campus plan which we plan to announce shortly. As with the generous donations for our new stone and doors, the implementation of this plan depends on the generosity of our parishioners. We hope you will understand. ~Fr. Contact Carol anytime x. 132 or cnowatzke@shparish.com Facebook group (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) The RCIA is a process for those considering becoming Catholic: -For those who are not baptized and are in the process of making a decision of becoming Catholic -For those who were baptized and are in another faith, yet are thinking of becoming Catholic -For those who were baptized Roman Catholic and have not received Communion or Confirmation The process is designed to assist those interested in Catholicism, to learn about our faith, our traditions, and our celebrations. We meet weekly on Wednesday evenings to journey through this process together.
