2 The presence of Christ in the Holy Sacrament of the Eucharist The Church teaches, and as Catholics we believe, that Christ is fully present in the holy Sacrament of the Eucharist. The Eucharistic species of bread and wine change into the body and blood of Christ at Mass during the consecration when the priest says the words of consecration: This is my body and this is my blood, repeating the same words spoken by Jesus at the Last Supper. After this, the bread and wine are no longer the way they were before (although the external appearances do not change) but are totally the body and blood of Christ. The act is theologically called transubstantiation. So when we come to the altar to receive the holy communion, we don t receive bread and wine, but the body and blood of Christ in the form of bread and wine. We also are encouraged to handle with respect and dignity the blood which remains in our chalices after people have received the Holy Communion. We either have to consume it or leave it to the priest or deacon or sacristan who will prepare the holy vessels for purification. In Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, we adore Christ Himself, who is truly present in the holy Eucharist. In this act of Adoration we acknowledge Christ s supreme perfection and goodness and our dependence upon Him as creatures. We adore, praise, thank and present our petitions to Christ knowing that He is fully present in the Eucharist and He hears us. In Adoration, the most difficult thing we struggle with is how to spend the whole hour or more in prayer! This is not easy for some people. We live in a busy world where we feel we should be doing something all the time. This has shortened our attention span and made spiritual activities like meditation and reflection extremely difficult. To be successful in our Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, one needs to put some effort into not letting his/her mind be absorbed with the outside world and daily activities and schedules. One has to make sure that he or she gives the full hour or more to the Lord. For example, if Adoration is an hour, one can chose to divide the whole hour into quarters and let each quarter deal with a specific issue. For instance, we can spend the first fifteen minutes in reflecting on what God has done for us in life and thanking Him, fifteen minutes for presenting petitions and needs (praying for the Church, for ourselves, our families, those in need, for peace in the world, for the dead and so on), fifteen for examining ourselves and asking God for forgiveness where we have done wrong, and the last fifteen for praising God. One can also read a scriptural passage and meditate on it, recite the rosary or even sit quietly and just be in the presence of God. The intention is to be immersed in prayer and avoid external distractions in order to be connected with the Lord in the Holy Eucharist. I am not sure whether people are aware that on the first Friday of every month, we have Adoration in the Chapel right after 7:00 am Mass. Let us encourage each other to come for Adoration. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is an important daily practice and becomes inexhaustible source of holiness it is pleasant to spend time with Christ, to lie close to his breast like the Beloved Disciple and to feel the infinite love present in his heart- Pope John Paul II in The Church and the Eucharist. ~Fr. Kisaka Kenwood Soup Kitchen It has been a tradition here at Sacred Heart to help the Reverend Leroy Sanders provide holiday dinners for folks who might otherwise go hungry, at a time when most of us are enjoying family feasts. If every family here at Sacred Heart could contribute $10, we would have more than enough to cover their needs. To that end, envelopes are available at the entrances and may be deposited in the regular collections. Whatever you can do would certainly help. Thanks so much!
3 Parish Office will close at 4:00 PM on Tuesday, November 19, 2013! Nite Lites News: Your personal request to join the Nite Lites 2014 Advanced Donors was mailed to all parishioners the middle of October. Advanced Donors play a critical role in helping fund the considerable startup expenses associated with Nite Lites. Every donation of $100 made by March 1, 2014, will receive a free admission ticket to Nite Lites If you happen to misplace your response envelope, feel free to grab one from one of the entrances at church, or, for those of you who would rather donate online, you can make an online donation at Remember, every dollar counts, and thank you!

9 DOMESTIC VIOLENCE Some battered victims stay because there is no place for them to go. If survivors believe the church and spiritual community support them, they are more likely to act on their own behalf. Survivors often cite the constant emotional, spiritual, and pragmatic assistance from their community of faith as a major reason they were able to move on to a safe and violent-free life. Read about the mission and resources of the Archdiocesan Domestic Abuse Outreach program by logging onto Go to the ARCHDIOCESAN RESOURCES box at the lower right of the homepage and select Domestic Violence Committee. How can you mobilize your community to support survivors and to prevent domestic violence?
