2 IMMIGRATION ISSUE The U.S. Bishops have asked parishes to pray for immigration reform and have declared this weekend as a time to celebrate the Dream Act. This story helps shed light on the need for reform in our immigration laws/policies. Story and Statement: written by Bishop Gustavo Garcia-Siller in May, 2010, while he was still Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Chicago. Bishop Gustavo was here at Sacred Heart to confirm the class of He is now Bishop of San Antonio, Texas: I am Gustavo Garcio-Siller, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Chicago. In 2004 I went to Guadalajara, Mexico to ordain three Catholic priests. Upon my return to the city of Chicago I flew into Midway Airport. Another priest who is of German descent accompanied me. It was not an easy entry. I was singled out and yelled at. My priest friend was allowed to enter the airport and had no problem proceeding. I, on the other hand, was asked to go to the red line. The red line is when they ask questions regarding your legal status. I was asked in a rude manner about my work, which led to further interrogation for almost two hours. The officers were constantly repeating that I did not answer the questions to their satisfaction regarding my work, my ministry I explained that I celebrate the Mass, celebrate First Communions, weddings and other sacraments; preach the Word of God; build communities of faith proclaiming the person and mission of Jesus Christ. I also kept on repeating, I am a Catholic priest. The officer would say, You are not answering the question. My friend, the priest, tried to intervene but to no avail. The scene grew to the point that some of the people, who were witnessing this, became upset. Midway Airport is located in the area where I do my ministry; some people there began to cry at the inappropriate nature of the incident. The point is, we are concerned about real people here in the U.S. We are concerned about what is taking place in the border area. We are totally in disagreement with the Arizona ruling. There are serious concerns regarding law enforcement based on suspicions of legal status. There is so much fear and anger sometimes in those who interpret and enforce the law, which fosters racism and discrimination. I am an American Citizen and I do have an honorable ministry. I am thankful for being an American. I am concerned that so many people, for whatever reasons, do not have the support system that I have or the path to improve their lives in our country. What about our people, those who struggle constantly because of their limitations with the English language, color, race, place of birth, culture, tradition and religion people are suffering and we are all suffering with them. We need a compassionate comprehensive immigration reform. There is a need for a pathway for people to live peaceful and be productive in a holistic way; there is a need for realistic quotas; there is a need for family unity, basic human rights of a civilized society; there is a need for orderly process; there is a need for compassionate comprehensive immigration reform; there is a need for new ways of relating to people building a nation of citizens that are treated with dignity. Let us find a way. ~ Sr. Luanne

4 MARSHA S FAREWELL AND THE NEW SEARCH Last week in this space you may have read a note from Marsha Adamczyk announcing that she will soon leave Sacred Heart to be the Director of Adult Faith Formation at Holy Family Parish, which is, in fact, her home parish. I and all of our staff members are truly sad to see Marsha leave. We all admire the ministerial work that she does so well. I suggested to her that we have a farewell ceremony and reception. She suggested the 13 th of November when St. Columbanus will visit Sacred Heart. Since Marsha was very instrumental in forming the Sharing relationship with St. Columbanus, I thought that it would be fitting to celebrate her accomplishments at the 10:30 Mass and then have a combined reception after the Mass. Meanwhile, I have contacted the Office of Lay Ecclesial Ministry and am putting together a search committee to find a replacement. I hope we can accomplish this by November 1 st. ~ Fr. Bob

The committee sought to enrich the Sacred Heart community simply by having parishioners gather around a table to share a meal and enjoy each other s company. In past years, our gracious hosts have opened their homes to us and made the event synonymous with Sacred Heart Founders Week, with the harvest moon in the sky, and with fellowship in our parish. The Progressive Dinner is not a fundraising event. This year, the evening will begin with cocktails at the home of Rich and Nancy Kehoe: 640 Hill Road in Winnetka. During cocktails you will select a host home for dinner and dessert. Please join us this year to enjoy a meal with fellow parishioners and experience the warmth of Sacred Heart. If you are interested in hosting the event this year or in the future, please contact one of the committee chairs.
