2 HEART TO HEART pastor to parish Inside the Offices That doozy of a rainstorm last Saturday had one negative effect: it rained inside the parish offices. Again. That s how bad the roof is. We re getting bids on a new roof. Storms I presided at the 5:00 Saturday evening Mass last weekend. Right about the time we were singing the Holy, Holy the storm rumbled in from the west. Thunder boomed at the conclusion of the Holy, almost as if it were on cue. By the time we were singing the concluding hymn of the Mass, the storm was in full force, lashing Winnetka with furious rain. It was coming down in droves. Quite a few people decided they weren t going to make a run for it. We told people it was OK to stay, to make themselves comfortable in either the church or the gathering space, as they waited out the storm. It was clear that this particular storm wasn t going to let up anytime soon. I recalled seeing some wine bottles in the office frig, leftovers, I believe, from the Cocktails in the Courtyard event. So for the adults stuck here after that Mass, we broke out three bottles and shared what was left of the wine. Afterwards, one lady remarked that it was very pleasant getting to know a fellow parishioner that she had seen in church but never actually met before. Getting stuck by the storm had its benefits. We put this off last year with a temporary fix, knowing that we would be engaging in a capital campaign (To Teach Who Christ Is). We are getting closer to determining the final campaign plan. The deadline for completing the survey was this past Wednesday, July 27. They are now being tabulated. What s Next? In early August the same parish lay leadership that formulated the proposed capital projects plan that you received in the mail will gather again and hear the results of the survey, and the results of the personal interviews conducted by the Steier Group. Based on the feedback, the plan will either be affirmed as is or modified by the leadership to reflect the results of the survey. Then, this summer, we form the campaign committee and in the fall we engage in the first phase of the campaign. Thank you for your feedback. Honest, solid feedback is exactly what we need in order to embark upon a successful campaign. Sometimes that s precisely what we do: make the best of a stormy situation, take it as an opportunity to learn, to benefit. There ll be more storms, someday. Hopefully, the wine won t give out.

Our consultants with the Steier Group are reviewing the data and will give the parish a final report on August 9.

3 CAPITAL CAMPAIGN CORNER I want to thank all the families who par cipated in the campaign planning study this month. Your thoughts, comments and recommenda ons will help guide us as we move forward with our capital campaign. As we announced during the study, the parish will par cipate in the final wave of the Archdiocesan campaign, To Teach Who Christ Is this fall. The campaign planning study allowed parishioners to provide input on what addi onal capital improvement projects we should take on at this me. Sacred Heart is our home. For genera ons, families have educated their children, celebrated the sacraments and experienced the rich tradi on of our Catholic faith together as a parish family. I look forward to working with you to improve our parish and move forward with the next chapter of our history together. The success of our religious educa on depends on the dedicated individuals who are willing to share their me, talents and faith with the future church, our parish children. We are in need of co-catechists (2 per classroom), classroom aides, subs tute teachers, AV assistance and office assistance. Are you looking to serve but not sure how? Have you wanted to learn more about your faith in a friendly atmosphere? The best way to learn is to teach. If you are feeling called to service but are not sure how, give Sue Lehocky a call at All you need is a passion to share your faith we ll help with the rest. Summer Assistance In early August we will be organizing and assembling materials for the year. If you have a few hours during the day to help let us know and we will set up a couple of mes to get all the work done! We were able to serve a hot, nutri ous dinner to 80+ of our Rogers Park neighbors. Our cooks and servers included Judy and Bradley Pyke, Roberta Olshansky, Julie Hartvigsen, Mary Ann Hocter, Sean Henrick, Stu Schoder, Barbara Anderson & Ed Kuffert, Frieda Baker, Pa y Sanfilippo and Amy, Dave and Andy Hill. We also want to thank our friends at Sunset Foods in Highland Park and Once Upon A Bagel in Hubbard Woods for their generous dona ons. We make a trip to A Just Harvest on the 3rd Sunday of every month and are always looking for new volunteers. A LETTER FROM A SACRED HEART PARISHIONER Dear Sacred Heart Winnetka, As I prepare to enter the Society of the Sacred Heart (RSCJ) as a candidate (postulant/aspirant), I wanted to express my deep gra tude to Sacred Heart Winnetka for providing a sacred space to deepen my rela onship with God and contemplate a religious voca on. Having very li le exposure to religious, none was more surprised than I, when I found myself contempla ng life as a Catholic Sister. Thinking I was too old to discern a religious voca on, it was through the Sacred Heart community, I found someone I trusted to share this unexpected longing with. Through this friend, I was introduced to another parishioner, Sister Peggy McDonnell, RSCJ, who has relessly shared her voca on, guided me through the ups and downs of discernment, and introduced me to her community, the Society of the Sacred Heart. Community is what makes Sacred Heart Winnetka so special. You ve provided me with the environment that allowed me to listen to God and find the courage to leave the life I know to pursue a religious voca on. The gi of pursuing a voca on is not just mine, but something I share with all of you. 6 Hearts Alive in Worship My only desire is to unite myself to God (St. Paul of the Cross) A FEW WORDS ABOUT STEWARDSHIP The following is an excerpt from an ar cle by Fr. Thomas Gen le from the Archdiocese of Louisville, Kentucky. When the Bishops wrote the pastoral (le er) on stewardship they en tled it A Disciple s Response. This assumes that all are disciples. A disciple is defined as one who learns from a master. It assumes that there is close and constant contact with the teacher. There exists a trust in the message of the teacher, a willingness to follow that message, and ul mately a desire to live and spread the message. All of this is necessary before one becomes a steward. Our world defines a steward as a manager. The bishops broadened this defini on when they said a steward is one who receives gratefully, tends responsibly, shares lovingly and justly, and returns with increase. So what they are describing are par cular kinds of disciples who understand their role as a grateful recipient of all. Because all is entrusted to disciples, they understand that they are responsible for all that is there. Disciples also know that it is not theirs, but is entrusted to them to be shared with those in need. The final and most important component of this trust is the expecta on of an increase. What the bishops are specifically describing is a lifestyle. A Community of Privilege and Responsibility The lifestyle of stewardship begins with the acceptance of the role given to each in Bap sm. When we are bap zed we are called by name into a community of privilege and responsibility. The privilege is that we are part of a community that will love, care, nurture, respect, correct, educate, and honor. It is here that we are given the chance to be disciples. This community is based on the message of the master. It focuses its energy on following the master s teachings. It teaches that the only way to know the master is to spend the necessary me to develop a close rela onship with the master. The responsibility comes with the realiza on that it is up to each member of the community to be a source of love, care, respect, correc on, educa on, and honor. It is in accep ng this responsibility that the disciple becomes a steward. Stewards recognize that their presence is an integral part of this community. Being called by name means each has a unique role to play in the community. St. Paul says in 1 Corinthians 12, God placed the parts, each one of them, in the body as he intended. 7 Hearts Alive in Worship My only desire is to unite myself to God (St. Paul of the Cross) THIS WEEK S SPOTLIGHT ON THE JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY The Poor Have Much to Teach Us As Pope Francis states in his book The Church of Mercy, for the Church, the op on for the poor is primarily a theological category rather than a cultural, sociological, poli cal, or philosophical one. God shows the poor his first mercy. This divine preference has consequences for the faith life of all Chris ans, because we are called to have this mind... which was in Jesus Christ (Phil.2:5). Inspired by this, the Church has made an op on for the poor, which is understood as a special form of primacy in the exercise of Chris an charity, to which the whole tradi on of the Church bears witness. This op on as (Pope) Benedict XVI has taught is implicit in our Chris an faith in a God who became poor for us, so as to enrich us with his poverty. This is why I want a Church that is poor and for the poor. They have much to teach us. Not only do they share in the sensus fidei (sense of the faith or faithful), but in their difficul es they know the suffering Christ. We need to let ourselves be evangelized by them. The new evangeliza on is an invita on to acknowledge the saving power at work in their lives and to put them at the center of the Church s pilgrim way. We are called to find Christ in them, to lend our voice to their causes, but also to be their friends, to listen to them, to speak for them, and to embrace the mysterious wisdom that God wishes to share with us through them. RETROUVAILLE: A LIFELINE FOR MARRIAGES The word Retrouvaille (re-tro-vi with a long i) is a French word meaning rediscovery. This program helps couples heal and renew their marriages and offers tools needed to rediscover a loving marriage rela onship. The Retrouvaille Program consists of a weekend experience combined with a series of 6 post-weekend sessions. Upcoming weekends: August 5th-7th and December 2nd-4th.
