2 HEART TO HEART pastor to parish Report on Campaign Survey I write this column in an cipa on of receiving the report from the Steier Group on the survey and personal interview results regarding the capital campaign. They will present the results to the same group of lay leaders that formulated the plan which you received in the mail and which you commented on in either the survey or a personal interview. Depending on what the staff and the lay leaders hear in the report, we will either go forward with the plan as is or we will modify it if necessary due to feedback from the parish. Just to refresh your memory, the lay leaders I m referring to are the members of the parish Stewardship council, the parish Finance council, the School board, the Religious Educa on board, the Long Range Planning Commi ee and the Buildings and Grounds Commi ee. Ge ng It Right In moun ng the campaign, we want to pursue the right direc on, a direc on that will garner the most support and the most success. That s why we hired the Steier Group to conduct the planning study and that s why they pursued the survey and the personal interviews. Why a campaign at all? Every parish in the Archdiocese must par cipate in an Archdiocesan-wide campaign to support Catholic schools. Sacred Heart s entry into this par cular Archdiocesan campaign was delayed due to the change in pastors. We are in the sixth and final wave of TTWCI. Our goal, the amount of money we are expected to raise for TTWCI, is set by the Archdiocese and is a percentage of our annual Sunday and Holy Day income: $632,000 (payable to the Archdiocese in five annual installments beginning in June 2017). To Teach Who Christ Is allows every parish in the Archdiocese to run an independent campaign apart from TTWCI as long as the TTWCI goal is folded into the parish independent campaign. Knowing that we have significant deferred maintenance needs, we opted for the independent campaign. In addi on to the list of deferred maintenance needs, Sacred Heart already had a campaign plan outlined by the Long Range Planning Commi ee which met for over two years under Fr. Heidenreich. Several years have gone by since that plan was formulated, so the parish lay leadership gathered to consider that plan a plan which had not taken into account the deferred maintenance needs of our five buildings. As a result, the lay leadership arrived at the revised plan you received in the mail and which you were asked to comment on in the survey and in the personal interviews. Now we will take all of that into further considera on and determine what will best fit our parish needs given the level of support and priori za on as expressed in the survey and the interviews. This discernment and decision-making is very much a fluid process. In an undertaking such as this, I think it is a good process that will yield a very good result. A parish is a unique community of individuals and families that, in coming to a direc on for the future, relies on a lot of talking, praying, thinking, and discerning, which includes as many of the faithful as possible to arrive at the place to which God is calling us. Thank you for your input in the survey and in the interviews Message from Carol Nowatzke Dear Sacred Heart, I will be leaving Sacred Heart to take a posi on as Campus Minister, Coordinator of Retreats, Faith Forma on, and Liturgy at Benedic ne University later this month. As excited as I am about this new opportunity, I am sad to be leaving this wonderful community. Five years ago I came to Sacred Heart eager to find my place in this parish. Now I feel like I am leaving a family. In my me here I have learned so much and been con nually touched by the loving nature and generosity of the people here. It has truly been an honor to serve the people of Sacred Heart Parish. Thank you all for your support over the years. Sacred Heart will always have a special, holy place in my heart. God bless, Carol Nowatzke

3 Hearts Nurtured by Faith If God can work through me, he can work through anyone (St. Francis of Assisi) Statement of Archbishop Blase J. Cupich on the Pope's Commission to Study the Subject of Women Deacons August 2, 2016 Last May, Pope Francis indicated his willingness to appoint a commission to study the subject of women deacons. Today I welcome the news that he has done just that. From the earliest days of the church, women rightly served in key leadership roles. S ll, the church must do be er. Women deserve to be brought more fully into the decisionmaking of the church. I look forward to learning more about the work of the commission, composed of an equal number of men and women, as they bring their considerable talents to bear on this important subject in the life of the church. Volunteers Needed for A Just Harvest We are looking for volunteers to both cook and serve a meal at A Just Harvest on Sunday, August 21. 5 Hearts Making a Difference The na on doesn t simply need what we have. It needs what we are. (Edith Stein) A le er from a Sacred Heart parishioner Dear Sacred Heart Winnetka, As I prepare to enter the Society of the Sacred Heart (RSCJ) as a candidate (postulant/aspirant), I wanted to express my deep gra tude to Sacred Heart Winnetka for providing a sacred space to deepen my rela onship with God and contemplate a religious voca on. Having very li le exposure to religious, none was more surprised than I, when I found myself contempla ng life as a Catholic Sister. Thinking I was too old to discern a religious voca on, it was through the Sacred Heart community, I found someone I trusted to share this unexpected longing with. Through this friend, I was introduced to another parishioner, Sister Peggy McDonnell, RSCJ, who has relessly shared her voca on, guided me through the ups and downs of discernment, and introduced me to her community, the Society of the Sacred Heart. Community is what makes Sacred Heart Winnetka so special. You ve provided me with the environment that allowed me to listen to God and find the courage to leave the life I know to pursue a religious voca on. The gi of pursuing a voca on is not just mine, but something I share with all of you. Please know that I carry the Sacred Heart community in heart and prayer as I move into this next phase of my discernment, as a candidate with the Society of the Sacred Heart. Warmly, Sally Hoban What s Happening in Hai? A new Medical Clinic About to Open in Sassier! Excitement is building in Sacred Heart s twin parish in Sassier, Hai as the date of the opening of the new medical clinic in Sassier is drawing nearer. The Hai an Ministry of Public Health has already granted the clinic a license to operate for the coming year. The clinic building is completed. Some of the furniture and equipment is already on site, with more to arrive in the coming weeks. Poten al professional and administra ve staff members are being interviewed, with choices to be made by the end of August. Ten years ago, the idea that a clinic with a doctor, nurse, pharmacy, and laboratory would someday be serving the people of Greater Sassier would have been dismissed as fantasy. Sassier, as you may know, is three or more hours walk from the city of Jeremie a walk that includes wading through a river. Health care has always been far away, so far that it was unreachable for many people, par cularly those who needed it most. The clinic s opera ons will be overseen by Madam Concepcia Pamphile, the Deputy Medical Director of St Anthony Hospital. Madam Pamphile has been involved in the clinic since the earliest days of planning, guiding the development through design, construc on and now in the preopening phases. The clinic will work closely with St Anthony Hospital, the Ministry and the Hai an Health Founda on to provide primary medical care to everyone in the area. The Clinic is located adjacent to the Sassier Parish schools, so that the health care, including vaccina ons, will be readily available to nearly 900 children who a end school in Sassier. In Hai, people die from ailments we treat by visi ng our medicine cabinet or the local CVS. Too o en, help is too li le and too late. Watch for more informa on about the clinic opening this summer and the Grand Opening in September.

6 Hearts Alive in Worship My only desire is to unite myself to God (St. Paul of the Cross) THIS WEEK S SPOTLIGHT ON THE JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY Pope Francis made a private pilgrimage on Thursday, August 4th to Assisi and spoke about the importance of forgiveness, saying only the path of forgiveness can truly renew the Church and the world. He lamented that too many people are caught up in resentment and harbor hatred because they are incapable of forgiving. These people, he went on, ruin their own lives and the lives of those around them. The Pope s words came during an address delivered inside the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels in Assisi a er earlier going to pray in silence inside the small Porziuncola chapel where the Italian saint founded the Franciscan order in the 13th century. Here is an excerpt of his address: Each of us might be that servant in the parable burdened with so great a debt that he could never repay it. When we kneel before the priest in the confessional, we do exactly what that servant did. We say, Lord, have pa ence with me. Have you ever reflected on God s pa ence? He is full of pa ence. We are well aware of our many faults and the fact that we o en fall back into the same sins. Yet God never res of offering us his forgiveness each me we ask for it. His is a pardon that is full and complete, one that assures us that, even if we fall back into the same sins, he is merciful and never ceases to love us. Like the master in the parable, God feels compassion, a mixture of pity and love; that is how the Gospel describes God s mercy towards us. Our Father is moved to compassion whenever we repent, and he sends us home with hearts calm and at peace. He tells us that all is remi ed and forgiven. God s forgiveness knows no limits; it is greater than anything we can imagine and it come to all who know in their hearts that they have done wrong and desire to return to him. God looks at the heart that seeks forgiveness. A er addressing those inside the basilica, the Pope spent about an hour hearing the confessions of 19 people before gree ng the friars and local religious authori es including an Imam from Perugia. He then went to the nearby infirmary to visit a number of friars who are ill before going outside where he briefly greeted pilgrims wai ng outside in the square and once again stressed the importance of forgiving others. 7 Hearts Alive in Worship My only desire is to unite myself to God (St. Paul of the Cross) A FEW WORDS ABOUT STEWARDSHIP... WE ARE CALLED By virtue of our baptism, we are called to be God s disciples and are invited to do Christ s work on earth. As disciples, we are granted all of the tools necessary to bring the light, hope and love of God to others. WE ARE DISCIPLES Our relationship with God is strengthened through prayer. In allowing ourselves to be transformed by this relationship, we have the ability to transform to give flesh to God in this world and help God s kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven. We are asked to share our gift of faith with others and to be missionaries in the ordinariness of our everyday lives. WE ARE GIFTED As God s creation, we reflect God s love and vision for humanity. We each are blessed with unique gifts and talents. In fact, all we have is a gift, all we are is a gift our very life is a gift. We are asked to be responsible managers of our gifts, utilizing them in a faith-filled spirit of generosity to help fulfill God s mission on earth. WE ARE JUST We are asked to love to be in right relationship with God, ourselves, our neighbors, and our world by giving practical expression to Gospel values and tangibly witnessing to God s miraculous love. We have been told what is good and what God asks of us: To live justly, to love tenderly, to walk humbly with your God. Micah 6:8 SACRED HEART MEN S RETREAT Oct.
