THE TOWER October 9, Stand up and go; Your faith has saved you. Luke 17:19

HEART TO HEART pastor to parish the whole parish community that is welcoming them, sharing our faith with them, and walking the faith journey together in the days and years ahead. I hope as many as possible will be able to par cipate in this celebra on. We will first gather in church as usual, but will then walk back to the ves bule, to meet our catechumen and candidates and then bring them inside. Rite of Acceptance & Welcoming Next Sunday at the 10:30 Mass we will celebrate the Rite of Acceptance for Qing Ru who is in the adult ini a on process. This rite marks the beginning of the catechumenate stage in the ini a on journey for adults. Throughout the catechumenate stage and beyond, these adult catechumens will be preparing for Bap sm, Confirma on, and Eucharist which will be celebrated for them at the Easter Vigil. At this same Mass we will acknowledge Susan Sorano and Ivan Vasilyev, candidates who already share our Chris an faith through Bap sm. They will celebrate the Rite of Welcoming, as they mark this moment of following God s call to live their Chris an faith and complete their Chris an ini a on within the Catholic community. Through their sponsors we all sign them with the cross of Christ; and later in the Mass we present a sacred treasure, God s Word that we hear proclaimed each week, to be their nourishment as they draw closer to Easter. We con nue to pray for them on their journey. A er Mass you are also invited to come to the gathering space to personally welcome Qing, Susan and Ivan. Before coming next week, please give some thought to this ques on: What is the cross you are embracing in your own life? You may want to share your responses with your family or a friend before coming next Sunday. So to reiterate, two groups of adults will be acknowledged and prayed for in this combined rite: a catechumen (the unbap zed) who is preparing for Bap sm, Confirma on, and Eucharist, and candidates (those already bap zed) who are preparing to complete their Chris an ini a on through Confirma on and Eucharist. Mass will take a few minutes longer. You are important in this celebra on, for it is

Hearts Alive in Worship My only desire is to unite myself to God (St. Paul of the Cross) A note to the people of Sacred Heart from Sister Peggy McDonnell, RSCJ Sister Peggy McDonnell is a member of the Religious Sisters of the Sacred Heart. She has made her home here at Sacred Heart Parish for some 30 years and has touched countless lives. Over the years, she has prayed with and for us, shared in the joys and sorrows of the parish and many parishioners, sung in the choir, and been a model of Christ s loving heart to us all. This is her last weekend here at Sacred Heart, and she has wri en us the following note: Thank you, my beloved faith community. I leave for Albany, New York on October 11, where I will be living with my religious community, the Society of the Sacred Heart. We share space there with many others in a re rement community known as Teresian House. I will actually be living at Avila, the independent living facility nearby, where we are tenants. Why am I moving? In September 2015, changes in work and health concerns for my siblings suddenly catapulted into a year of prayer and discernment about moving closer to my family. Came spring 2016, and the importance of living with my own community, harboring the charism of the Society, drew me. This is a me when my later years are upon me. The move is not easy but, through prayer, I feel certain that it is right. Walking the walk with all of you has been a great privilege. You have enlarged my heart and there I hold each one, in sickness and in health, un l the great Amen. May God bless you all. Sister Peggy

Hearts Alive in Worship My only desire is to unite myself to God (St. Paul of the Cross) Hurricane Ma hew Roars through Sacred Heart s Twin Parish in Sassier "I don't think we will survive." Mondy Pamphile October 4, 2016 Deacon Gerry Keenan received this text Tuesday morning from the opera ons director of Sacred Heart s twin parish in Sassier, Hai. He and his family are huddled in their home as 100 mile per hour winds howl around them and torren al rains ba er their home. The eye of the Hurricane passed within 10 miles of Sassier on Tuesday morning about 9 A.M. How long, LORD? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? Psalm 13:1 They may be the lucky ones. Their concrete home is on a hilltop. So many people in the Sassier area live on hillsides or near rivers in homes with metal or thatched roofs. When trees snap like twigs, n roofs go flying. Imagine the destruc on that would be caused in your neighborhood by 15+ inches of rain in 24 hours and 100 mile an hour winds. Now, imagine what our sisters and brothers in Hai are experiencing when streams and rivers become raging torrents, sweeping away everything in their path. Imagine the flooding as the waters overflowed the rivers' banks. Imagine having nowhere to go... While we don t now (Wednesday) the full extent of the damage, we know the relief and rebuilding efforts will be enormous. Hai was a challenging place to get things done before Ma hew. With homes destroyed, trees down, roads washed out and limited fuel supplies, relief and recovery will be an extraordinary effort. In addi on to your prayers, we ask that you donate today to Sacred Heart s Relief Fund for Sassier in one of three ways, 1. Go to and follow Donate instruc ons. There is a special op on for the Sassier Relief Fund. 2. Put a check in the collec on basket and mark it clearly for Hai Relief. 3. Send a check to Sacred Heart Sassier Relief Fund at Sacred Heart Church-Hai Fund 1077 Tower Road Winnetka, IL All the money will be used in the Sassier area. We will update you as the extent of the destruc on and loss has become clearer. Thank you for your prayers and support for our sisters and brothers in Sassier.

Hearts Alive in Worship My only desire is to unite myself to God (St. Paul of the Cross) ST. FRANCIS DE SALES SPIRITUALITY OF THE HEART GATHERING If in your heart you have been longing for a closer rela onship with God, or have been searching for a means to deepen your prayer life, Salesian Spirituality may be an answer for you. St. Francis de Sales, a 17th century French bishop, taught that each person is unique with different gi s. Since each person is different, holiness will look different in each of us. He believed that lay people could achieve holiness by the loving performance of everyday du es, the support of spiritual friends, and a li le me commi ed to daily prayer. His approach is amazingly well-adapted to busy contemporary lives. To learn more about St. Francis de Sales and his Spirituality of the Heart you are cordially invited to tea on Sunday, November 6th at 2:00 p.m. at the home of Susan Couri, 1515 Meadow Lane in Glenview. For more informa on or to RSVP, please contact June Hocter, jkhocter@comcast.net or Roseanne Madden, or themadrose@gmail.com. A FEW WORDS ABOUT STEWARDSHIP... Remember, all that we have, all that we are is Gi from God. Ask yourself every day: How am I giving back to God? Stewardship in the Scriptures Consider this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows boun fully will also reap boun fully. Each must do as already determined, without sadness or compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. Moreover, God is able to make every grace abundant for you, so that in all things, always having all you need, you may have an abundance for every good work. 2 Corinthians 9: 6-8 Through him [then] let us con nually offer God a sacrifice of praise, that is, the fruit of lips that confess his name. Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have; God is pleased by sacrifices of that kind. Hebrews 13:15, 16 Therefore, our God, we give you thanks and we praise the majesty of your name. 1 Chronicles 29:13 John answered and said, No one can receive anything except what has been given him from heaven. John 3:27 MEN OF SACRED HEART (MOSH) GATHERING If you're interested in reading some excellent books and then gathering with other men of the parish to discuss them, along with the many topics that result about faith, life and the world we live in, then join us one Saturday morning at 7:30 a.m. in the Parish Office Fireplace Room. It s a great group and we only meet for an hour every few weeks. Upcoming mee ng dates are: October 15th October 29th (Tenta ve) November 12th November 26th December 10th The book we re reading now is A Godly Humanism by Cardinal George. Books we ve read in the past include: The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren; My Life with the Saints by James Mar n, SJ Return of the Prodigal Son by Henri Nouwen Secular Days, Sacred Moments by Robert Coles Rebuilt: Awakening the Faithful, Reaching the Lost and Making Church Ma er by Fr. Michael White and Tom Corcoran; The Holy Longing by Ronald Rolheiser; The Jesuit Guide to (almost) Everything: A Spirituality for Real Life by James Mar n, SJ The Joy of the Gospel by Pope Francis; and Mere Chris anity by C.S. Lewis. For more informa on, contact Chris O Donnell at Odonnell.cj@gmail.com. Consider joining us!

Hearts Making a Difference The na on doesn t simply need what we have. It needs what we are. (Edith Stein) Coming Soon: A New Mass Se ng for Us to Sing Here at Sacred Heart, we ve sung many different se ngs of the Mass, rota ng them seasonally to keep them fresh. In 2010, when the New Roman Missal changed the wording of some of the Mass texts, our sung Mass se ngs also changed. Since then, we ve been regularly singing two contras ng Mass se ngs with great gusto: Mass of St. Frances Cabrini composed by Kevin Keil, and Mass of St. Ann composed by Ed Bolduc. We ve also retained Marty Haugen s wellknown Mass of Crea on for most funerals and weddings, since those celebra ons tend to draw people from other parishes who might not be familiar with the music that we regularly sing on Sunday. Over the next few months, we will be introducing another musical se ng to our seasonal rota on: Missa Pacem (Mass of Peace) by L. Randolph Babin, which the composer dedicated to those who lost their lives in the tragic events of September 11, We ve already started playing the melodies as prelude or interlude music before or during Mass, and we ve included the music at the back of the seasonal worship booklets. Beginning at weekend Masses in October, we will also rehearse the various sec ons of the new Mass se ng just before Mass begins. However, many parishioners are s ll arriving as Mass begins, so we need your help in introducing the new music. Can you make an effort to come to church a few minutes early in the next several weeks? This will give you me to listen to the new music, and to join in the pre- Mass rehearsal. You can also listen to the Mass on YouTube. Simply search for Missa Pacem Babin. If we all work together, we should be able to easily and quickly add the new se ng to our musical repertoire as Advent approaches. Todd Gresick, Director of Music Can You Help Our Friends At A Just Harvest Stock Their Pantry? Our friends at the Just Harvest Community Kitchen have served a nutri ous dinner to 150+ Rogers Park neighbors every night for 30 years. (See to understand their important work.) Can you contribute pantry supplies to help them fulfill their mission? They cook 5,000 dinners each month, so large "Costco-size" containers are great. Paper Towels Instant coffee Napkins Sugar Laundry soap Pine-Sol liquid cleaner Bleach Liquid hand soap 50-gallon garbage bags Toilet paper Heavy-duty mop heads Canned soup Diced tomatoes Spices (garlic, pepper, etc.) Heavy-duty plas c forks Ziploc type plas c bags Plas c serving gloves 18-inch aluminum foil 18-inch plas c wrap Hair nets (from Costco) Gas cards Pre-paid cards from Costco, Sam s Club, etc. We ll collect your dona ons in the Gathering Space. Your contribu ons will be delivered by the Sacred Heart volunteer team, who will help serve dinner on Sunday, October 16.

Catholics Vote. From the US Conference of Catholic Bishops website: We vote because we are ci zens. But we vote conscien ously because we are people of faith. Our consciences are formed through studying Scripture and the teachings of the Church, examina on of the facts, and prayerful reflec on. As Catholic ci zens, we should remember three things: 1.Respect for the dignity of each person is the core of Catholic social and moral reaching. This is our most basic principle. 2.We focus on the common good, not our own personal interests. WE ask, how can we make the world a be er place? Not, how can I improve my own personal situa on. 3.We have a responsibility-a true obliga on-to form our consciences and par cipate in the civic life of this na on. We need to participate for the common good. Sometimes we hear: a good Catholic is not interested in politics. This is not true: good Catholics immerse themselves in politics by offering the best of themselves so that the leader can govern." - Pope Francis, 9/16/13 A en on Liturgical Ministers New Schedule Is Coming: The new schedule for Lectors, Eucharis c Ministers, Greeters and Altar Servers is now in the works.
