2 We are back! Five airports later, the Teen Trip to Haiti has returned! We had a truly amazing week experiencing our sister parish in Sassier, Haiti. We spent five days with the teens of Sassier learning about the neighborhood and each other. Four of the five days we spent painting the second floor of the new primary school. It looks great! While there, we split ourselves into four teams. Each team consisted of 3-4 Sacred Heart teens and 4 St. John Baptiste teens, an adult from each parish, and an interpreter. Our first day together we formed team names, team slogans, and drew our team symbols. Most of the teams had a similar theme of two hands clasped in solidarity, except for the Dream Team: they had a unicorn and a rainbow. I m not so sure that translated into Kreyol well, but the whole team certainly rallied around it! I have returned energized for a new year of youth ministry. We are kicking off the school year with a beach volleyball tournament at Glencoe beach on August 19. There will be food, sun, and lots of fun! One Voice will be taking some exciting new directions with a new leader as well. There is still much work to do, but if there is one thing I have learned about Sacred Heart in my time here it is how much the community values its young people. 4 Volunteers Needed for Oktoberfest! Calling all volunteers for Oktoberfest on September 29 here at Sacred Heart!!! We need YOU! If you are interested in running games, serving food, grilling brats, bartending, taking tickets, being a "general" helper...we would love to have you join us for what is sure to be a fun event! And FYI - we will assign shifts, so you won't be stuck in one place for the entire event. We want you to have fun, too!!! 5 Finances at a Glance August 5, 2012 August is traditionally a tough month for us in terms of collections many families are taking advantage of the last weeks before school to take vacations.all the more reason to sign up for online giving TODAY. Visit our website, click on DONATE, and within 5 minutes you can set up recurring giving so the church doesn t suffer financially when you are away!!! ONLINE GIVING WORKS! Look at comparatives from the last 3 years (YTD through the first week in August): FY 2011 $73,488 FY 2012 $68,995 FY 2013 $89,710!!!!! We still need 13 more catechists, mostly for the Sunday morning 9:00-10:15 classes. P/K & K: need one more catechist each Grade 1: need 1 Grade 3: need 4 Grade 6: need 3 (2 morning; 1 afternoon) Grade 7: need 3 Sunday afternoon classes are after the 4:30 Mass; 5:30-6:34 PM. Classes ordinarily have two catechists per classroom with students per class. Please call Sr. Luanne at to talk further. Classes begin Sept. 9. INTERESTED? Classes for those interested in learning more about the Catholic faith, and perhaps becoming a Catholic, begin soon. Called the RCIA, Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, the process takes place over some months and ordinarily culminates with the Easter Vigil. Perhaps you know someone you could invite to consider being Catholic. No decision about joining the Catholic church need be made at the beginning of the process. 6 SCHOOL NEWS! We are hard at work getting ready for the start of school! The office is open if you have any questions or need to drop anything off. The New Family committee s last play date will be this Thursday the 16 th, at 9:30am in Corwin Park, we hope to see you there! RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS IMPORTANT DATES: Classes begin: Sunday Sept. 9; 9:00 AM and 5:30 PM Parent meeting: Sept. 9, 9:00-10:15 AM in gym August 17 is the registration deadline. After August 17 there can be no guarantee for choice of class times. Space is limited so register as soon as possible to avoid not getting your choice. Classes are as follows: (Please note there are changes from last year s schedule): Sunday mornings: 9:00-10:15 AM P/K Grade 8 Sunday afternoons: 5:30-6:45 PM (new earlier time and includes more grades) Grades 3-8 NO Wednesday evening classes Register online at our website or in person at the Religious Education office. Office hours are ordinarily 9:00-4:30, Mon-Fri. Call for more info. Catechists are still needed. Call Sr. Luanne at the Religious Education Office to volunteer. 7 The Mass Is Coming to Your Neighborhood! Help us Make it a Success During this Year of the Sunday Mass, we want to go above and beyond the usual. We want to make the Mass a more personal prayer experience for you. We want to bring the Mass to YOU! It s a great way to return to our early Christian roots when the Eucharist was celebrated in people s homes known as House Churches. Beginning in September, we would like to celebrate Mass once a month on a Saturday evening at 5:00 or 5:30pm at the homes of various parishioners in the different neighborhoods of our parish. These liturgies will be simple and informal. They ll be outdoors in the warmer months, and people will be asked to bring a lawn chair. In cooler/cold weather, the liturgies will be indoors. Guests, particularly children, may have to sit on the floor. We re looking for families in the various neighborhoods of the parish that would be willing to host a Neighborhood Mass (probably 6 in Glencoe and 4 in Winnetka). Hosts will need a gathering space to accommodate a large group of people a large yard for warmer months, or a large room indoors for the colder months. These Masses will be limited to 40 people each, so as not to overwhelm our volunteer hosts. Parishioners will need to register for the Mass in their neighborhood on our Parish Website or by calling the Parish Office. If you are willing and able to host one of these Neighborhood Masses in your yard or home, please contact Fr. Bob or Judy Pyke at the Parish Office ( ) or jpyke@shparish.com. We ll provide the host family with all the instructions necessary to be a Neighborhood Mass host. (FYI, Hosts will NOT be expected to provide any food or drink at these gatherings.) We ll publish information regarding the Neighborhood Masses as soon as we have more information. Stay tuned! We are blessed and thankful for the gifts that our Altar Servers bring us.
