2 St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 2 From Fr. Vernon Our Parish Picnic/Reunion At the Olmer reunion in Nebraska in August, I know I will be introduced to new members brought into the family relationship. Grand-nephews and grand-nieces have married or are meeting their prospective partners, often unknowns to me. After the reunion, please do not ask me to remember their names! Reunions are important for families. Reunions provide the opportunity to visit with relatives we seldom see. We catch up on how family members are doing. Stories are told and swapped. My brother-in-law, Charlie, was the story teller for years at our family reunions. He had a way of embellishing a story that got better with the years. At his burial, I turned to his six sons and asked, Who of you will be the story-teller like your father was? A couple of Charlie s sons turned to their brother, Richard, and gave him the nod. The mantle was being transferred to his shoulders. Reunions keep us in touch with our roots. We celebrate our family heritage. That is important if we are to remain family. Our parish picnic is our parish family reunion. Much what I said about a family reunion applies as well to our parish picnic/reunion. Hopefully the Lord will provide us with good weather that will be conducive for visiting with fellow parishioners on the beautiful K of C grounds. Our thanks to the Knights for providing their facilities for our parish picnic. Former parishioners come to parish picnics it provides them the opportunity to reconnect with friends of yesteryear. Visiting with patriarchs and matriarchs of the parish help to keep us in touch with our roots. The parish picnic celebrates our heritage, and in turn, our participation in the picnic adds our bit to the heritage future generations will continue to celebrate. Despite the hard work, the parish picnic helps us to be and remain a parish family. Come and enjoy our parish picnic/reunion. Parish Office 203 E. Main St., P.O. Diocesan website: Meditation Who is my neighbor? (Luke 10:29) In his questioning and counter-questioning with Jesus, this lawyer revealed a deep sensitivity to the word of the Lord. Unlike most of the other experts in Judaism who were among Jesus most bitter opponents this one got to the heart of the entire plan of God with two simple commands: Love God, and love your neighbor. In his answer, the lawyer demonstrated what Moses told the Israelites centuries earlier: The word is very near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart (Deuteronomy 30:14). He showed that the way of God is written, almost genetically, within the impulses of our human nature, and for this he won Jesus approval. Brothers and sisters, the gospel isn t hard to understand. It s not a complex set of theological formulas. We don t need years of education to get to its core. God has written it on our hearts, and in the depths of our conscience, we all know the truth. But there is more to this passage than a conversation between two religious leaders. Jesus not only told the lawyer that he was on the right track, he also said: Do this and you will live (Luke 10:28). Evidently, it s not enough for us to understand the truth. Our understanding should lead us to doing the truth as well. So in the end, the gospel is just as demanding as it is simple. Whenever we hear God s word proclaimed at Mass, Jesus tells us: Go and do likewise (Luke 10:37). He asks us to embrace the simplicity of his message and to silence the inner voices that try to make excuses and protest that Jesus is asking too much. Moses was right: The word is not far from us at all. The Holy Spirit the love and power of God is always with us to teach us and to empower us. Thank you, Jesus, for writing your words on my heart. By the power of your Spirit, give me the courage and humility to go and do the works of your gospel. Jesus, make me more like you. THE WORD AMONG US Baptisms We welcome the newly baptized to our faith family. Frederick Barney Jansen, Son of Aaron and Billi (Esker) Jansen Zachary Joseph Vahling, Son of Kenneth and Amy (Westendorf) Vahling

4 St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 4 FAMILY CORNER THAT S THE WAY IT IS. I heard this phrase on three separate occasions over the past couple weeks. The first time it came as a response of a 99 year-old woman whose daughter told her that it is increasingly difficult for her to leave or say goodbye as they both face her mother s age and diminishment. The next time these words came from a widower in his 80 s in conclusion to the story that he had lived a full life and is now losing his ability to see, read, drive, walk and get around as he used to. His wife died several years ago, and his only son lives across the country. That s the way it is, he said. I heard the comment a third time from a woman who, on a recent visit, told me: I never dreamed growing old would require so much patience. When I was younger, I was able to go to bed late, rise early, bake a pie, walk six blocks to Mass, return home, fix breakfast for whoever was there, and complete a sewing project all before noon! Now I go to bed early, and it takes the entire morning to get out of bed, wash, dress, take my medicines, eat breakfast and put a pie in the oven. I m exhausted by noon and ready for a nap. That s the way it is. Not one of these sounded hopeless, upset or discouraged. Not one of them used the phrase as a way to cop out on life. Quite the contrary! Their words carried peace, wisdom, understanding and hope qualities that come from years of living life based on learning to live life as it is with its losses and gains and not as we wish it would be. Their words carried a mark of quiet confidence that they had lived a life the best they knew how and now they were counting on God to take care of the rest. Their finite years had taught them eternal truths: we don t live forever, our bodies wear out, our loved ones die or leave us, and life holds disappointment as well as success. They have learned to take life as it comes, shaping what they were able, and holding the rest with open hands, trusting that God would provide. Picasso said: It takes a long time to become young. I believe it also takes a lot of birthdays to reach that depth of wisdom that enables us to choose our battles. It takes a long time to know we are able to control some things but not all. What a gift it is to look back over our life, seeing God s care for us through the years and knowing God will be there for and with us in whatever circumstances life finds us now and in the future. That s the way it is. This week take one day and try to not complain about anything but rather see the blessing in That s the way it is. Share the experience with someone else. Holiday World Incoming 8th graders to outgoing seniors: join us for a LAST BLAST before school starts! We are going to Holiday World on August 10th! Get your friends together and let's go have some fun! Forms are at the entrances of church this weekend. Something to Think About We all know that children pay absolutely close attention to everything they see around them, especially what goes on at home. I always enjoyed the advertisement several years ago that was touting a certain brand of shaving cream. This little boy would follow his father around as he prepared for work each morning. They would wash their faces together, put on shaving cream together, lather it up together, and then as the father razored his cheeks and neck, his son would follow, doing the same with his extended finger. Children are our future. Mothers and Fathers must show love in everything they say and do, think and feel, for all of it affects our children in a good or bad way. This poem puts it so nicely and gives us food for thought: A careful man I ought to be A little fellow follows me, I do not dare to go astray For fear he ll go the self-same way. Not once can I escape his eyes, What er he sees me do he tries. Like me, he says he s going to be That little chap who follows me. He thinks that I am good and fine, Believes in every word of mind. The base in me he must not see, That little chap who follows me. I must remember as I go Through summer s sun and winter s snow I m holding for the years to be. Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha, Virgin was the first Native American to be declared blessed. She was born in New York in Her mother was a Christian Algonguin and married a Mohawk chief. Kateri was orphaned at an early age, and disfigured by smallpox. When she was 20 years old, she became a Catholic and was then subjected to great abuse and persecuted by her tribe and her family. She fled to a Christian village near Montreal, Canada in She dedicated herself to Jesus Christ and was devoted to the Eucharist. She died at age 24. Pope John Paul II beatified her in Work is underway to have her canonized by the Church.

Holy Humor A lot of folks say they pray most fervently when they re riding with a bad driver! That reminds me of a story I heard about two little old ladies who were out for a drive in a large car. They were both so short their heads were barely visible above the dashboard. As they were cruising along, they came to a red light, but they just went right on through it. Soon they approached another intersection, and the light there was also red, but the car didn t stop. After the car rolled through a third red light, the old woman in the passenger s seat shrieked to high heaven: Mildred! Did you know you just ran through three red lights? You could have killed us! Oh my stars! Mildred exclaimed. Am I driving?

6 St. Francis of Assisi Parish - Teutopolis, Illinois page 6 God, Why Me...Why Now...Why This? Healing Day of Reflection with Rainey Fahey will be held on Saturday, July 31, 2010, 10 am 3:30 pm at the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows. Although we cannot control what happens to us, we can control how we react. We rejoice and give thanks when our prayers are answered. What about the times when our prayers aren t answered the way we want? Often we spend time regretting the past or fearing the future and, in doing so, we are unaware of the most precious gift from God the present moment. Rainey will guide participants to see where they are physically, spiritually, and emotionally regarding difficult circumstances in their lives. Rainey Fahey is the Director of Spiritual Formation for Catholic Charities in the Archdiocese of St. Louis, MO. Rainey is a frequent speaker and retreat leader in the Metro-East area. She is known for her humor and compassion. Having dealt with multiple sclerosis and breast cancer, Rainey will share personal stories and reflections on finding hope and promise in everyday life, even in the face of adversity. Cost is $30.00 per person, which includes lunch. To register or for more information call What s Your Catholic IQ? 1.
