2 St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 2 BIBLE STUDY for the summer will continue as Church History. We meet on the third Thursday of the month. Our next meeting will be July 21 10::00 a.m. in St. Clare Hall. Everyone is welcome. This month we will look at early Christian persecutions until Christianity becomes the state Religion. RCIA The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is now meeting. If you or anyone you know has expressed an interest in checking out what the Catholic Church teaches please contact Sr. Pierre for more information ext. 227 There are no commitments, no pressure, just information. This week s topic: Mary: her titles and feasts You ve probably heard many homilies. Which ones have stuck with you? Close your eyes for a minute, and try to recall one. If you re like most people, you remembered this one because it featured a compelling, memorable story. And this, as the title of a recent business book puts it, produced a message that is Made to Stick. Jesus was a master of sticky messages, parables like today s Gospel reading of the sower and the seed. They are not short stories like the kind you would find in an anthology or tell as a bedtime tale. Usually quite short, Jesus parables might be a simple image or description from ordinary life; if they re stories, they often take a surprising twist. But always, they offer a comparison between something we know (a seed, a banquet, a lost sheep) and something that Jesus wants us to understand (the kingdom of God, the Father s love). Jesus parables stick with us because they open our minds and invite us into the story, which, if we have ears to hear, is endlessly deep. Each parable is like the seed in today s Gospel alive, good in every season, and capable of yielding an abundant harvest year after year, if the soil is receptive. In a way, Jesus himself is the most wondrous parable of all. His life, to quote another book title, is truly The Greatest Story Ever Told. The whole gospel story presents the gripping drama of a Father who longs to save his children; about his Son, whose love moves him to carry out the ultimate rescue mission; about the Holy Spirit who empowered Jesus and now fills and transforms us tinto the likeness of Christ. And now that greatest of stories continues on in each of us. Will its message stick? It s up to us. Welcome, Master of the harvest! Sow your word in every part of me. Grow whatever crop you desire. I want to know you and love you more each day. All Church Ministers please mark your calendars for Monday, October 10 th at 7:00 p.m. for a meeting on the latest in church changes. 4 St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 4 Q. Our prayer group is discussing ways we can change and strengthen our faith. What one thing could we change that would have the greatest impact on our faith? A. A famous coach once said that when the team is in trouble and things aren't going well, go back to the basics; when the team is winning and things are going well, go back to the basics! Any renewal program, faith development, or spiritual growth effort has to start with the basic core of what it means to believe. If the foundation is not strong, the house will not stand. So if you work on one thing, begin with the idea that God is love, who loves us and calls us to love one another. If we really take that belief to heart, it changes how we see God, ourselves and one another. It would change how we pray, how we treat others and how we understand and live our own life. Our sense of mission and purpose will be more focused on God's plan and our role in it. Love is the core of faith, the goal of life and the hope of heaven. Whatever we do to strengthen and deepen our faith will begin with and end in love Liturgical Publications Inc If your home is overheated, maybe you need prayer-conditioning. Have You Noticed the new parking lot on the East side of church? This new lot gives us 18 additional parking spaces of which 16 of these spaces are intended for those with minimal disabilities, senior citizens and those who have trouble walking. Two spaces will be marked handi capped. So please be considerate; if you are healthy and have no trouble walking, park elsewhere. Thanks for your cooperation. St. Bonaventure Bishop & Doctor of the Church Feast day July 15 Bonaventure (O Buona Ventura O good fortune) was born in Tuscany in 1221 and was a Franciscan theologian. He received the degree of Doctor together with his intimate friend, the great St. Thomas Aquinas When we pray, the voice of the heart must be heard more than that proceeding from the mouth. Say Cheese! Do you know it is time for a new parish pictorial directory? Where does the time go? Plans are being made photography dates are already scheduled in the months of October, November and December of this year. We hope all our parishioners will plan on participating. These directories help us get to know one another and CONNECT! Lifetouch Church Directories and Portraits is the name of the company that will be producing our new directory. Members of Effingham County Right to Life wish to thank the Franciscan Friars and the parishioners of St. Francis for the use of our beautiful church for the 37th Annual Day of Prayer. A special thanks to all of the Musicians and Leaders of Prayer, Flag Bearers and Fourth Degree Knights, CCW Officers, Knights of the Altar, Lectors, Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist. A gold star to the ladies who baked all of those delicious cookies. Remember to pray for an end to abortion. God Bless You! Mrs. Jack Koester Prayer Day Coordinator A Thank You from the Mary Ordner Family Thank you to everyone who brought desserts and helped with the funeral dinner of Mary Ordner. We also want to thank the Resurrection Choir and Rosie Myers for singing so beautifully during the liturgy. VBS NEWS & THANKS: Our parish youth celebrated Inside Out & Upside Down on Mainstreet where Jesus Makes a Difference EVERYDAY! For 3 days, we sang, did crafts, played games, ate great snacks, and listened to Bible parables that lead us to live lives of Gratitude, Compassion, Forgiveness, Grace & Faithfulness. A Great Big VBS Thank You to all the leaders in the different sections, helpers, VBS band and skit people, and to you, the parish, for sending your kids to learn more about Jesus!
5 July 10, 2011 Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time page 5 Why Recycle? God has given us this earth to cultivate and care for it (Gen. 2:15). The earth and all in it belongs to our Creator God. We are only stewards of what God has given us. God expects us to be good stewards of Mother Earth. I use the term Mother Earth because in some ways, the Earth is Mother to us. Our bodies are formed from materials of the earth. The earth is the environment where we live. We depend on Mother Earth to support and sustain us; surely we should want to care for the very environment that sustains us. Only God knows how many future generations will live on this earth. What kind of an earth will we pass on to them? When I go past garbage/trash dumps, it saddens my heart. I know the places are called landfills today. The name landfill sounds less objectionable than a dump, but the fact remains the same, much recyclable materials are deposited there. Non-biodegradable stuff remains there and will be a problem for future generations. Recycling puts materials back in use time and time again. That is responsible stewardship. We pay to have our trash and garbage hauled away. Placing it in a landfill gets it out of our way but does not entirely dispose of the non-biodegradable items such as glass. If recyclable items are not recycled, they are placed with the trash and they end up in some landfill. We pay to have our trash picked up, why should we not expect to pay to have materials recycled? Many recyclable items take up considerable space. It costs to transport bulky items (milk jugs, water bottles, etc.), to bale them and then haul the bales to a place that recycles them into products. Donations are needed to defray the costs of the recycling program in Teutopolis. A drop-box for donations is under the blue awning at the northwest corner of the Paper Depot. I want to thank the many people who are recycling. If you are uncertain about what can be accepted and the proper preparation of items, please take an information sheet. These are inside the Paper Depot by the east door and in the INFO-BOX by the recycling bin. Thanks to those who have been making donations for recycling. I also want to thank the volunteers who are helping keep the premises neat, checking on and doing the necessary work associated at this gathering site of recyclables. Fr. Vernon Olmer, O.F.M. Holy Humor A psychology professor had just finished a lecture on mental health and was giving an oral test. Speaking specifically about manic depression, she asked, How would you diagnose a patient who walks back and forth screaming at the top of his lungs one minute, then sits in a chair weeping uncontrollably the next? A young man in the rear raised his hand and answered, He s probably a high school basketball coach.
6 Date Sunday in Ordinary Time page 6 PLEASE, PLEASE return all baby bottles, even if empty!!! We are missing 75 bottles that were given out here at St. Francis! We will need to purchase more bottles to replace the ones not returned, so please bring your bottles to the office or to the box in front of Mary s altar. The Family Life Pregnancy Center gratefully thanks St. Francis Parish for all who donated coins, cash, or check! It s Fair Time Again Springfield Right to Life needs volunteers for the Right to Life State Fair Booth from Friday, August 12 through Sunday, August 21. Over two thousand men, women and children of all ages visit our booth to pick up literature, sign a pro-life petition and show their support for life. The scheduling is for three hour shifts starting at 9:00 am with the last shift ending at 9:00 pm. We need four volunteers per shift. Being a volunteer at our booth is an opportunity to be a witness for the unborn. It is a very positive experience and our presence does make a difference. A single woman who was pregnant and was being pressured by her family to have an abortion, came into our booth, picked up some literature and the next day sought support from a pro-life pregnancy center to keep her baby. Please help us. Older children and teens are welcome to come and make a difference too. Call Andrea Judd or the Right to Life Office for more information.
