1 Easter Celebration (+ Congregation please stand if able.) 6:00 p.m. The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS CALL TO WORSHIP (Psalm 23:1, ESV) Mr. Josh Squires + HYMN: What Wondrous Love is This WONDROUS LOVE Trinity Hymnal, no. 261 What wondrous love is this, O my soul, O my soul, What wondrous love is this, O my soul! What wondrous love is this that caused the Lord of bliss To bear the dreadful curse for my soul, for my soul, To bear the dreadful curse for my soul! To God and to the Lamb, I will sing, I will sing, To God and to the Lamb, I will sing; To God and to the Lamb, who is the great I AM, While millions join the theme, I will sing, I will sing, While millions join the theme, I will sing! And when from death I m free, I ll sing on, I ll sing on, And when from death I m free, I ll sing on; And when from death I m free, I ll sing and joyful be, And through eternity I ll sing on, I ll sing on, and through eternity, I ll sing on! + PRAYER OF INVOCATION + HYMN: The Lord s My Shepherd, I ll Not Want CRIMOND Trinity Hymnal, no. 87, stanzas 1-3 The Lord s my Shepherd, I ll not want; He makes me down to lie in pastures green; He leadeth me the quiet waters by. My soul he doth restore again; And me to walk doth make within the paths Of righteousness, e en for his own name s sake. Yea, though I walk in death s dark vale, Yet will I fear none ill, for thou art with me; And thy rod and staff me comfort still. CHILDREN S SERMON: Children s Catechism #54 Q. What is meant by the atonement? A. Christ satisfied God's justice by his suffering and death as a substitute for sinners. (After the Children s Sermon, children may leave for Club and Cherub Choir.) HYMN: The Lord s My Shepherd, I ll Not Want Trinity Hymnal, no. 87, stanzas 4-5 My table thou hast furnished In presence of my foes; my head thou dost With oil anoint, and my cup overflows. Goodness and mercy all my life Shall surely follow me: and in God s house Forevermore my dwelling place shall be. CRIMOND EVENING PRAYER Elder Jay Thompson PRESENTATION OF EVENING OFFERINGS OFFERTORY: O Sacred Head, Now Wounded O sacred Head, now wounded, With grief and shame weighed down; Now scornfully surrounded With thorns, thine only crown; O sacred Head, what glory, What bliss till now was thine! Yet, though despised and gory, I joy to call thee mine. What, thou, my Lord, hast suffered Was all for sinners gain: Mine, mine was the transgression, But thine the deadly pain. Lo, here I fall, my Savior! Tis I deserve thy place; Look on me with thy favor, Vouchsafe to me thy grace. What language shall I borrow To thank thee, dearest Friend, For this, thy dying sorrow, Thy pity without end? O make me thine forever; And should I fainting be, Lord, let me never, never Outlive my love to thee. The Worship Ensemble J. S. Bach + DOXOLOGY: TALLIS CANON Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise him, all creatures here below; Praise him above, ye heav nly host: Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. SCRIPTURE LESSON: 1 Peter 5:1-5 (Pew Bible, page 1016) SERMON: Unchanging Grace for Uncertain Times Leadership By Grace Alone PRAYER Dr. Gabriel N.E. Fluhrer + HYMN: That Easter Day with Joy Was Bright PUER NOBIS NASCITUR Trinity Hymnal, no. 278, stanzas 1-3 That Easter day with joy was bright: The sun shone out with fairer light When to their longing eyes restored, Th apostles saw their risen Lord. His risen flesh with radiance glowed, His wounded hands and feet he showed; Those scars their solemn witness gave That Christ was risen from the grave. O Jesus, King of gentleness, Do thou thyself our hearts possess, That we may give thee all our days The willing tribute of our praise. + BENEDICTION + CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE That Easter Day with Joy Was Bright PUER NOBIS NASCITUR Trinity Hymnal, no. 278, stanza 4 O Lord of all, with us abide in this, Our joyful Eastertide; From ev ry weapon death can wield Thine own redeemed forever shield.
2 To Be Noted Thank you for turning off cell phones during the worship service. Please leave any food or drink outside the Sanctuary. Nurseries for children up to the age of four are provided in the Thornwell Education Building. Parents of children who have been in the Nursery are asked to come for them promptly after the conclusion of the service. A quiet room with a live video feed of the service is available in Thornwell, Room 113. There, mothers may attend to the needs of their children. The Sanctuary is equipped with a hearing assistance system. Please ask deacons for a receiver. The beautiful Easter lilies adorning the sanctuary today have been given to the glory of God, as an expression of praise for the Risen Lord, and in gratitude for other believers, some of them among us, others already in the presence of Christ. Easter lilies may be picked up following the Evening Service. They must be picked up by 5:00 p.m. on Monday, April 22. Special Easter Offering Impacting Our Continent The white envelopes in the pew racks give us an opportunity to contribute to our Special Easter Offering which will be used to support the five church plants and mission churches under the care of the Catawba Presbytery. These works are sprinkled throughout the Columbia area as well as in Charleston and on the west coast, and our Special Easter Offering is a vital means of investing ourselves in the building of his Church. Goodness and mercy all my life Shall surely follow me: and in God s house Forevermore my dwelling place shall be.
5 I Peter 5:1-5 So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed: 2 shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; 3 not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock. 4 And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory.5 Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.
6 That Easter Day With Joy Was Bright That Easter day with joy was bright: The sun shone out with fairer light When to their longing eyes restored, Th apostles saw their risen Lord. His risen flesh with radiance glowed, His wounded hands and feet he showed; Those scars their solemn witness gave That Christ was risen from the grave.
