1 WELCOME Welcome to First United Methodist Church, we are delighted that you have chosen to worship with us this morning. Founded in 1821, First Church is the oldest Protestant church in the area and the oldest Methodist church in Florida. This historic church, with four regular Sunday services, has a membership of 3200 and is overflowing with life. If you are visiting, we hope that you will consider becoming a member of our church family. You may join any Sunday by profession of faith or transfer of membership. SEASON OF PENTECOST We are now in the Season after Pentecost, also called Ordinary Time. The liturgical color for the season is green. The Season after Pentecost begins each year on the day after Pentecost and ends the day before the First Sunday of Advent. It can include between 23 and 28 Sundays, depending on the date of Easter, but the first Sunday is always Trinity Sunday, and the last Sunday is always the Sunday of the Reign of Christ or Christ the King. The scripture lessons in the lectionary for this half of the year go in a semi-continuous cycle through books of the Bible rather than follow a theme; the gospel lessons cover Jesus teaching ministry. NURSERY & CHILDREN S BULLETINS Nursery is available this morning for children up to five years old. If you need help locating the nursery, please see an usher or greeter for assistance. Also, children s worship bulletins and crayons are available in the lobbies. INTRODUCTION TO FIRST CHURCH We welcome all visitors and new members that are interested in learning more about First Church to an introductory class that consists of four parts. 6 LECTIONARY SCRIPTURES First Lesson: Genesis 21:8-21. At Sarah s insistence, Abraham drives Ishmael and his mother Hagar to wander in Beersheba. On the point of death, they are both delivered by God. Psalm: 86:1-10, A prayer of David for deliverance from trouble. He calls upon the Lord for help, confident that God will save him. Second Lesson: Romans 6:1b-11. Paul tells the Romans that they have been baptized into Christ s death and have received newness of life as they will share in his resurrection. Therefore, they are dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. Gospel Lesson: Matthew 10: Jesus teaches that God loves even the least significant living things. He then posits: how much more loved are God s servants? The good news is such that the disciples are called to proclaim it upon the housetops. DAILY READINGS The daily readings expand the range of biblical reading in worship and personal devotion by providing daily citations for the full three year cycle of the Revised Common Lectionary. These readings complement the Sunday readings: Monday through Wednesday readings help the reader reflect on and digest what they heard in worship; Thursday through Saturday readings help prepare the reader for the Sunday ahead. Psalm Old Test. New Test. MONDAY Psalm 86:11-17 Genesis 16:1-15 Revelation 2:1-7 TUESDAY Psalm 86:11-17 Genesis 25:12-18 Revelation 2:8-11 WEDNESDAY Psalm 86:11-17 Jeremiah 42:18-22 Matthew 10:5-23 THURSDAY Psalm 13 Micah 7:18-20 Galatians 5:2-6 FRIDAY Psalm 13 2 Chronicles 20:5-11 Galatians 5:7-12 SATURDAY Psalm 13 Genesis 26:23-25 Luke 17:1-4 NOTES
