1 Order for Worship of God October 1, :00, 9:30, and 11:00 am During month of October, we will commemorate 500th anniversary of Protestant Reformation. Each Sunday will feature a different liturgy from Reformation period. Today, The German Mass and Order of Service, 1526, by Martin Lur forms basis of our service. May God help me. Amen. Martin Lur, Diet of Worms 1521 Today we begin our commemoration of 500th anniversary of Protestant Reformation. According to God s sovereign providence, re were many people and events which helped launched Reformation; Martin Lur s nailing of ninetyfive ses on October 31, 1517 and ensuing debate it initiated has come to represent beginning of this pivotal movement. At time, few would have suspected that sound of a hammer striking castle church door in Wittenberg, Germany, would soon be heard around world and lead ultimately to greatest transformation of Western society since apostles first preached Gospel throughout Roman empire. An heir of Bishop Augustine of Hippo, Martin Lur is one of most significant figures God has raised up since that time. This law student turned Augustinian monk became center of a great controversy after his ses were copied and distributed throughout Europe. nitially protesting pope s attempt to sell salvation, Lur s study of Scripture soon led him to oppose church of Rome on issues including primacy of Bible over church tradition and means by which we are found righteous in sight of God. This last issue is probably Lur s most significant contribution to Christian ology. Though preached clearly in New Testament and found in writings of many of church fars, medieval bishops and priests had largely forgotten truth that our own good works can by no means merit God s favor. Salvation is by grace alone through faith alone, and good works result from our faith, y are not added to it as grounds for our right standing in Lord s eyes (Eph. 2:810). Justification, God s declaration that we are not guilty, forgiven of sin, and righteous in His sight comes because through our faith alone Far imputes, or reckons to our account, perfect righteousness of Christ (2 Cor. 5:21). Martin Lur s rediscovery of this truth led to a whole host of or church and societal reforms and much of what we take for granted in West would have likely been impossible had he never graced scene. Lur s translation of Bible into German put Word of God in hands of people, and today Scripture is available in vernacular language of many countries, enabling lay people to study it with profit. He reformed Latin mass by putting liturgy in common tongue so that nonscholars could hear and understand preached word of God and worship Lord with clarity. Lur lifted unbiblical ban on marriage for clergy and by his own teaching and example radically transformed institution itself. He recaptured biblical view of priesthood of all believers, showing all people that ir work had purpose and dignity because in it y can serve ir Creator. Today, Lur s legacy lives on in creeds and confessions of Protestant bodies worldwide. As we consider his importance, let us equip ourselves to be knowledgeable proclaimers and defenders of biblical truth.
