If the latter is the case, please Barb Thompson with your information at barbt@stpaulsonthehill.com 7:45 a.m. Advent Lessons & Carols This Sunday s Reading: Isaiah 40:1-11 & Mark 1:1-8 Next Sunday s Readings: Isaiah 40:1-11 & Mark 1:1-8 Christmas Hampers 2017 It s that time of year again when we ask for your donations of hampers for our annual drive. We are expecting to distribute hampers to 170 families and wish to thank you for your continued support. You can participate in two ways: 1) Using the list of suggested items, put together either a small, medium or large hamper for a family in need 2) Get a group together and sponsor a family which means putting together a food hamper plus purchasing individual gifts for family members. For information on option 2 (sponsoring a family) contact Elaine Phipps at or Caroline Honsberger at The date for distribution of the hampers will be Tuesday, December 19 th. We would like the hampers brought to the church on Sunday, December 17 th after the 11:00 a.m. service, up to 1:00 p.m., or from Christmas Caroling "To spread a little Christmas cheer, sing long and hard for all to hear." (Elf) You are invited to join us for an evening of Christmas Caroling at Community Nursing Home (Valley Farm Rd.) on Monday December 18th. We will meet inside the main entrance, on the south side of the building, at 7 p.m. David & Joanne Karram will lead us in song as Lorna guides us through the halls. The evening will conclude at 8:30 with refreshments in one of the fellowship rooms. Bring along a few Christmas cookies and I will supply the cider. All ages are welcome. Last Sunday, Canon Phil suggested an online Advent calendar as an interesting and fun way for the whole family to prepare for Christmas. Jacquie Lawson is an online resource for a whole array of animated cards as well as the calendar ($5.00 CAD). You ll have to take out a year s membership to have access and then purchase the resource.

2 But it s worth it. Check it out for free. / St. Paul s Donation Envelopes for 2018 are now available for pick up in the church lobby. If you no longer want regular envelopes, or if you wish to request envelopes, please contact our Envelope Secretary, Cassie Williams at cassiew@sympatico.ca or Tax receipts will be issued for contributions over $20 per year, even if you don t have envelopes, as long as you contribute a few times per year, that is the preferred method. If you contribute on a more regular basis and you are not on PAR (Pre-authorized Remittance), please use donation envelopes to make the job easier. There will not be a box of envelopes for you if you are on PAR unless you have requested them. Any contributions not made in a regular numbered envelope MUST HAVE your full name and address so that you can get proper credit. If you are interested in learning about our pre-authorized system or making changes to your existing PAR, or if you have any other questions, please contact Cassie Williams. SPOTH Kids: Fall News There are several events that are coming up over the next two months that require some help if you are available for any of these dates please contact the person who is listed beside the event. 1. Stage Hands for A Charlie Brown Christmas Must be available to attend Wednesday evening rehearsals December 13 th from 6 pm to 8:30 pm, be present for the Dress Rehearsal Saturday, December 16 th 12:30 pm to 7:30 pm & the Final Show Sunday December 17 th from 8 am to 1 pm Contact Jacquie James Charlie Brown Outreach Dinner Saturday December 16 th We are looking for teams of people to help set up the room 10 am to noon, serve the food 5:45 pm to 8 pm, and clean up from 7:30 pm to 8:30 pm. Christmas Play A Charlie Brown Christmas our Outreach Show and Dinner will be Saturday December 16th. This is a free dinner and show which is put on for the greater community is a chance for those who may not know God or cannot afford to have a family evening out. Last year we hosted 145 people for the show and dinner. We need people who can come in to help set up, serve and clean up. It is a wonderful way to help make Christmas special for someone. Copyright 2003; Betty Jo Mings A Christmas Poem My favorite season is here once again, The time to remember the Saviour of men, Who left Heaven's glory to come down to earth, And lie in a manger the night of His birth. He came here to die, all my sins to forgive, That some day in Heaven with Him I might live. I look all around at the beautiful sights, The shops and the malls with their glitter and lights; The songs about Christmas, and sleigh bells that ring, And children, and pageants, and choirs that sing. And I am so busy from morning till night, Preparing and planning to do things just right, While shopping, and cleaning, and cooking each day, With packages, ribbons, and cards on display, But please help me stop, Lord, and take time for You, And pray for Your guidance in each thing I do. Whenever I'm baking each goodie and treat, May I not forget those with nothing to eat. And may I be willing to share of my wealth, So they may be nourished, and brought back to health. And as I send greetings to friends I love so, Please help me to pray for Your saints I don't know, Who suffer in prisons for bearing Your Name, Forgotten, alone, undeserving of blame. Tis the Season What do you feel this time of year? Peace on earth? Joy to the world? Or pressure to make everything about your holiday picture-perfect? Relax. Jesus birth was orchestrated by the Ultimate Party Planner, God himself. Think about what that looked like: a small-town scandal, a difficult journey with a lukewarm welcome at the end of it, culminating in His Son being born in a grubby stable. Hardly the sort of event that would make anybody s Best Party of the Year list. On the surface, it was all wrong. According to God s plan, it was perfect. This Christmas, let s encourage one another to be a little more like Mary (Martha s sister, not Jesus mom) and focus on what s really important. So your home doesn t look like a magazine cover. So your dinner doesn t look like a Norman Rockwell painting. So your rendition of O Holy Night doesn t sound like Sandi Patty s. So what? Enjoy the season. Celebrate the gift, not the wrapping. Jesus the ultimate Good Thing. - Women of Faith Each time I am cleaning to keep my home neat, Please help me remember the ones on the street Who shiver because they've no place to stay warm, No shelter at all to protect from the storm. And as I go shopping, and see the display Of countless new garments in splendid array, Please keep my heart tender towards people in need, With loving compassion, devoid of greed. When reading the Bible that tells of Your care, Lord, give me a passion for souls in despair Who know not the Saviour Who saves them from sin. Please help me to share, and by faith draw them in.
