2 Easter Follow Up This past week, a big sigh of relief has been heard in the Sacred Heart Offices: Lent, the Triduum and Easter are over. Now we can relax and get some of our usual work done. And perhaps that sigh is echoed in many of your homes Easter and Spring Break are over, now back to the ordinary grind! But wait a minute, consulting my church calendar I see that we are now in the Easter Season, another period of fifty days lasting until Pentecost. What are we to do now? Most of us are tired of giving up stuff! The Easter Season is not like Lent these days we are urged to notice things, not deny ourselves. Notice what? Well, just as it took Mary Magdalene and the Apostles and the disciples on the road to Emmaus some time to recognize the presence of the resurrected Jesus right next to them, we too do not often recognize Jesus in our midst. OK - where do we start to look? First of all, listen to the stories read at Mass for the next few weeks. Compare these to your own stories and see if a similar dynamic of Jesus presence can be found with you and your family. Or just look around you at Mass today. The crowd is considerably smaller than it was at Easter, but notice the different people. Some are male, others female. Some are children and teens, others seniors. Some have lush, beautiful hair, others are bald. Etcetera, etcetera. Now recall one of the antiphons we hear during these days we are the living stones. And as such we make up the Church the Body of Christ. We are all stones of different color and shape. This is another presence of Jesus for us the person standing right next to us! This is especially a reality during Communion, when we all share a common and unique presence of Jesus in Holy Communion. That s why it s called communion! I want to take this opportunity to point out some of our members who are often overlooked. We are so blessed here at Sacred Heart to have a good number of teens who minister at the altar (lectors and Eucharistic Ministers and singers) as well as those who simply sit in the pews. These young women and men often go unnoticed because they are neither children nor adults. But Sacred Heart needs them as much as they need us. Of all the people in church on any given Sunday our teens are usually most aware of the threats and evils facing us in today s culture. Because so many of them are tech savvy, they are confronted by the underside of our society daily perhaps hourly. They need our support to recognize their goodness and to support their strong stand with Christ. (By the way, congratulations to our 8 th graders, who will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation next Saturday!) We need their help to share the subtleties of the problems we face in our society and how we can to work to keep an alternate vision, the vision Jesus taught, out there and attractive to our society. Finally, speaking of an attractive message, many have noticed the popularity of our new Pope Francis. But have we noticed that he too points out the presence of Christ not just because he s the Pope but more because he keeps before the world the preferential option for the poor and the neglected of our society and our world. (Matt. 25: whatever you did for one of these least you did for me. ) So welcome back from Spring Break and to business as usual, but keep your eyes open, looking for the resurrected Jesus. He may be closer to you than you think! ~ Fr. Bob

3 Annual Catholic Appeal 2013 Love Never Fails! 1 Cor 13:8 Please spend some time this week reflecting on the Annual Catholic Appeal. Please remember that the Annual Catholic Appeal campaign is much different than a one-time special collection. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a gift payable in installments. As you review the work enabled by your contribution to the Annual Catholic Appeal, please reflect on God s gifts to you. He has given you all that you have. Your gifts to our parish, to the Archdiocese and to the work of the Church throughout the world are given in gratitude for the continuing gifts that God gives you. Sometimes it is difficult to envision how one pledge can help an organization the size of our Archdiocese, how it can make a real difference. But each pledge does make a difference because all parishes participate in the campaign and the gifts of many enable our Archdiocese to deliver needed ministries and services. Our combined gifts not only signify our gratitude to God, they fund a significant portion of the work of our Archdiocese. After our parish goal of $67, is reached in cash, 100% of the additional funds come back to our parish to help to fund our needs. Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response. After our hard work we will come together for mass at St. Alphonsus where the music will be led by our very own One Voice! Contact Carol for registration! 7 BABY BOTTLE COLLECTION! Once again Sacred Heart Parish and the School are conducting a fund raising-drive for Aid for Women with the Baby Bottle Collection of Coins (or bills or checks or any combo of those) in the next couple of weeks. Please look for the boxes with the empty baby bottles at the rear and side entrances to the Church beginning on April 13th and 14th. Please drop off the bottles the weekend of April 20th and 21st. Expectant Mothers facing difficult situations in their pregnancies will benefit with help from this Catholic Support Organization based in downtown Chicago through clothing, diapers, car seats, formula, etc. Any help you can contribute is an appreciated help for LIFE. 8 SCHOOL NEWS! Have a wonderful Spring Break, classes resume April 8 th. Monday April 8 th, at 7PM SHAC will meet in the teachers lounge. Tuesday April 9 th, at 8:30am PTO will meet in the Parish Center Wednesday and Thursday the 8 th grade has Confirmation Practice: Wednesday for the 10:30 Mass, Thursday for the 1:30 Mass. Friday the 12 th, there will be a flower ceremony for the 8 th graders at 9am. This is a long-standing tradition. A faculty member secretly picked an 8 th grader several weeks ago who they have been praying for during their journey toward Confirmation. The ceremony consists of the faculty member revealing who their secret 8 th grade student is and giving them a flower that is representative of who the student is. It s a Grand Contest! Start saving those Grand Receipts. The Week of May 6-10th, we will be collecting receipts from Grand Foods. Each classroom will have an envelope that week to store receipts, and at the end of the week the class with the highest receipt total will win an OUT OF UNIFORM DAY! The Grand gives us back 3% of our pre-tax total. Just do your shopping and hold onto those receipts until May! Only receipts dated 3/27-4/10 will be accepted for the contest, but of course we will take ANY you have! RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS Today is the first day back after Easter and the morning 7 th & 8 th grade classes are celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation in the gym at 9:00 AM this morning. The Religious Education Board Meeting is Monday at 7:00-8:15 PM in the library. It s time to recruit 2-3 new members to come onto the board for a 3-year term. Interested in talking further? Call the R.E. office for more info or to volunteer ( ). Confirmation is next, 10:30 & 1:30 Masses with Bishop Kane. (Because we have over 100 students being confirmed, two services are necessary.) Schedule of Confirmation events this week is as follows: Practice in church for those with speaking parts (lectors & those doing petitions): Monday, April 8, 5:30-6:15 PM -- both Masses Evening of Prayer and Practice: Wednesday, April 10th for 10:30 Mass 7:00-8:30 PM in church Thursday, April 11th for 1:30 Mass 7:00-8:30 PM in church Completed 1 st Communion Eucharist books from Religious Education students are due next Sunday, April 14, in the Religious Education Office. Did you remember to bring your Lenten bank to the R.E. Office today? If not, bring it next Sunday to class. Our goal is to help build a community library in Burkina Faso, Africa. Our Peace Corps friend, John Garvy, spent two years there and visited our classes sharing his stories. Help us reach our goal!
