The light from the Advent wreath will gradually grow brighter each week as it reminds us of our need for God and also the needs of our brothers and sisters.

For the vast majority of us, December flies by in a flurry of activities and turns out to be a stressful time of the year. It is very easy to miss the whole point of the Advent-Christmas celebration.

2 NOVEMBER 27, 2016 Lord, make us turn to you; let us see your face and we shall be saved. (Psalm 80) Dear Parishioners and Friends; This weekend we celebrate the First Sunday of Advent and the liturgical start to our new church year. The light from the Advent wreath will gradually grow brighter each week as it reminds us of our need for God and also the needs of our brothers and sisters. Advent (literally means arrival ), has been observed for centuries as a time to contemplate Christ s birth. For the vast majority of us, December flies by in a flurry of activities and turns out to be a stressful time of the year. It is very easy to miss the whole point of the Advent-Christmas celebration. Our wonderful choirs will provide a great start to the Advent season next weekend offering their annual Advent Service of Lessons and Carols, at 2:00pm, in Church. If you have never been before please consider attending this inspiring presentation in word and song as the start of your Advent journey. Many thanks to all of our singers and readers and I hope you will be able to attend this special event. May this Advent be a time to rejoice, a time of real peace, a time of hope. Gonyo * * * * * * * * * * * ADVENT SERVICE OF LESSONS AND CAROLS Next Sunday, December 4 at 2:00pm in Church Patterned from a Church of England service dating back to 1918, when the men and boys choir from King s College Chapel first presented the service on Christmas Eve. One can still hear this service every Christmas Eve broadcast live from King s College on WXXI, and re-broadcast on Christmas Day. All of our music groups and choirs participate! Our mixed choir, children s choir, contemporary group, lite choir, and soloists. Also, we use eight readings, instead of the traditional nine. The service consists of short scripture readings from the old and new testaments, which tell the prophecy and events leading up to Christ s birth. The highlight of the service is all the wonderful seasonal music that helps to enlighten the stories. The songs are classical, traditional, and contemporary. There are Advent and Christmas texts, arranged with joyful rhythms and melodies. Why not take out a little time this season to listen to the story again in word and song. Many have told me, I look forward to this every year, and This is my Christmas gift to myself. Come and enjoy our biggest musical event of the year and invite your friends and family! MITTEN SUNDAY December 3 & 4 Each year at this time we collect mittens, hats and scarves for those less fortunate. If you have purchased or knitted any items and have items to donate you can leave them in the greeting area in church. On the weekend of December 3 & 4, baskets will be available in church to collect the mittens at all Masses Sunday, December 4 at 9:00am is our Monthly Children s Mass. Children are invited to bring their mittens to the altar when they come forward for the homily that weekend. Sign Up to LIGHT THE ADVENT WREATH Anyone wishing to light the Advent wreath at any of the weekend Masses should sign up on the bulletin board in the greeting area. Families, couples, friends and singles are all welcome to sign up. * * * * * * * * DAILY MASS PARTICIPANTS Please note if Webster Schools are closed then Morning Mass will be cancelled for the safety of all. Take some quiet time to spend with our Lord. THANK YOU, LUKE... WELCOME MATTHEW With the start of Advent and the new liturgical year, we bid a fond farewell to our Year C and the Gospel of Luke this past year, and also a warm welcome to Year A and the Gospel of Matthew. Beginning today, the church uses the Gospel of Matthew as her main Sunday Gospel. Matthew will ALWAYS be read during the Ordinary Times in chronological sequence (i.e., chapter by chapter) when the green vestments are worn. Matthew will OFTEN be read even during Advent and Lent, when appropriate. Many of our parishioners have been studying Matthew in our weekly Bible Studies this fall (Mondays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays). When Ordinary Time begins in January, we hope to provide more background and analysis of the Gospel of Matthew in this bulletin for all our people. St. Rita School Spirit of Learning Corner Here s what s happening! + This was a short holiday week that was shortened even more by the unexpected Snow Day on Monday! The students loved the surprise long weekend. + Our Thanksgiving Service Project for Foodlink ended Tuesday. Students brought in food items between November 14 and 22 in support of the Tops Food for Families Food Drive. The top three schools that collect the most pounds of canned food will win prizes. We would like to win but the real reward is how this service project strengthens our faith! + School was closed Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday for Thanksgiving Vacation. We used this time to reflect on what we are thankful for like this beautiful campus as well as the teachers and staff that educate and care for us here. We are, also, grateful to all Alumni, Grandparent, and Parent volunteers who work hard to make extracurricular events so much fun! We are especially thankful to you, our St. Rita Parish community for your unending support of our school! Happy Thanksgiving! Special Event All are Welcome! Friday, December 2 ~ beginning at 6:15pm at Barnes & Noble in Webster During our event, there will be a special reading of The Polar Express by Santa himself, story time by our St. Rita School teachers, and a musical performance by our 4th grade Junior Girl Scout Troop Make any purchase at Barnes and Noble (including the café) and a portion of the revenue will go to our school. Just let them know at the register that you re with St Rita s. So get a head start on your Christmas shopping while experiencing this magical night. Gift wrapping is available too! We hope you can join us for this St. Rita School fundraising tradition. LADIES SHOPPING NIGHT OUT Tuesday, December 6 7:00-9:00pm in St. Rita s Gym Bring your girlfriends, sisters, mothers, and daughters for a night of shopping without having to host a party. St. Rita School will be hosting all of your favorite direct sales vendors such as LulaRoe, Tastefully Simple, Pampered Chef, 31, Mary Kay Cosmetics, Tupperware, Avon, Dove Chocolatier, and more! Light refreshments will be served. A portion of vendor sales go towards St. Rita School. Come spend a night shopping for Christmas and take some time to chat and snack with the girls! A lot of supervision is needed to keep our parishioners and visitors safe and comfortable at those liturgies.
